Kite Museum is a beguiling sightseeing spot of the city that displays around 125 kites. Kite Museum gives an enticing experience especially to children. Also known as Patang Kite Museum, the small museum is dedicated to kites and kite flyers. It holds kites from the ancient times till modern period. Kite flying is a significant part of Gujaratโ€™s celebrations and festivals. During the festival of Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti the sky is full of colourful kites being driven by people of all ages. Irrespective of their caste, creed and religion people start flying the kite for several days before Uttarayan.

Ahmedabad is a city rich in cultural heritage. And apart from a number of places of historical and religious importance, it has different types of museums too. One such place is the Kite Museum, known as Patang Museum locally. It is located within the Sanskar Kendra, which itself is an encyclopaedia to know about art, culture and history of Ahmedabad. The Kite Museum is among the must-see places to visit in Ahmedabad for youth and children, to know everything about kites and their making. It started with a generous donation by Mr Bhanubhai Shah. He had a collection of kites for around fifty years which are now available on display in the museum along with many more. The Museum has kites in varied shapes, sizes and colours, few of which are as old as seventy years. Besides the kites, youโ€™ll also find many beautiful paintings and information about kite flying traditions around the world. Kite flying is a popular activity in Ahmedabad and also in the whole of Gujarat. People take part in kite-flying competitions too. During the International Kite Festival, held in January, people from all over India and abroad gather with their kites. The colourful display in the sky is a sight worth beholding.

3 stars because it was closed and I have no clue What's inside. However I was able to spot some beautiful old rock art. Again these beautiful sculptures were very amazing to look at but there was no history or details written anywhere around. All we can do is imagine what could it have been in the past. Maybe if they do some more work on it, I will prefer going there again.

Maintained quite poorly, the shelves don't seem to have been cleaned for a long time. The place is quite dark, inadequate & improper lighting system. Managed inefficiently & needs lots of improvements to prove to its claim of being 2nd largest kite museum in the world(1st one at Japan).

Located in the Sanskar Kendra, the Kite Museum in Ahmedabad is the brainchild of Bhanubhai Shah. The Museum is one of a kind in our country and it is the second one in the world.

Building is currently closed. Don't bother going, it's in dire need of restoration that's not being carried out. They won't allow you near the gates even, nor can you go to the Tagore hall nearby, it's pathetic really.

Located on Bhagtacharya road, Kocharab, Paldi at Ahmedabad, the kite museum is a nice place, especially for kids to see first hand the beautiful art of kites. Gujarat is synonymous with kite flying during the Uttarayan festival. During this time of the year, the sky is rendered colorful with kites flying all over the sky in unimaginable sizes, shapes, & color. Irrespective of caste, creed, or religion, Gujaratis fly kites during this festival. The museum is located within Sanskar Kendra, designed by Le Corbusier. It is mentioned that the thought of setting up such a museum came to Sri. Bhanubhai Shah when he gave away his collection of kites to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, which also incidentally manages the place. The museum also has display of several historical aspects of kite flying since the ancient times. It's astonishing to read about the different types of kites from other parts of the world & how this art has evolved over the ages. The museum is easily accessible by different modes of transport. Overall, a beautiful place to visit with kids. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

Kite flying day is only festival which follow the dates every year. Other festivals follow the movement of sun and moon. No it does not meant it is not festival belongs to India. Definitely it is, there was reference of kite during 12th and 13th centuries. Don't miss out to visit to get more history related to kites:)

Designed by Le Corbusier to exhibit the history of kites and its making. Its combination of brick and concrete creates a softened look which contrasts with the Brutalist Tagore Hall opposite the museum. Currently, the museum is closed due to a major need for restoration, as it is quite dilapidated, due to the concrete planters breaking off or having been pulled for safety reasons. It was poorly made at an early stage, so it wasnโ€™t able to last long.

(Translated by Google) There is nothing to look at in the exhibition content, but it is free of charge. The building is the worst in maintenance, but it has a design of Corbusier, and elements like Corbusier such as pilotis and slopes can be seen. It can be enjoyed by comparing it with the National Art Center of Tokyo. It's tragic to see what Ahmedabad has done to this world famous building, now closed, and partly demolished. And this is supposed to be a World Heritage City! It's a depressing joke. Thankfully, the Punjab are taking better care of their Corbusian modernist masterpieces, unlike this shabby city.

Worth a visit for those who love history and have interest in kites. Place is not well maintained. Photography is not allowed but nobody is around to monitor. Entry is free and read through the write-up's. Some of the facts are eye opening and you can gradually see how flying and kite flying as a hobby is connected. Take the kids along!!

The museum is closed since lockdown. I went there on 26th Jan 2021 and disappointed. Not sure when it will reopen.

  • 5/5 Kishanchand E. 4 years ago on Google
It is the only kite museum in India. The uniqueness will not be evident as this is treated as a part of the museum building. The place is also not maintained properly. Photography is prohibited inside the area. The evolution of kites has been portrayed sequentially and will definitely entertain you.
