Amazing, beautiful and charming place Amazing, beautiful and charming place, with some rare ancient and beautiful statues, some rare painting and also some rare coins.. all in an architecturally appealing building and well displayed.. surprisingly had missed this place so far, despite several visits to ahmedabad.. Definitely recommended for museum buffs and museum visitors, in fact turned out to be hidden gem, amongst india's many museums.. Honestly i was almost speechless when i finished! Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum was a brain child of a revered Jain saint Agamprabhakar Muni Shri Punyavijayji Maharaj, and a philanthropic industrialist Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai who together collected 45,000 printed books of different languages like Apabhramsa , Hindi , Old Gujarati , Pali , Rajasthani , Sanskrit, etc . and 75,000 manuscripts . Their collection covers a wide variety of topics from Buddhism , Jainism and its darshans , grammar , tantra and poetics to Vedas , agama to the different branches of Indian philosophy. The internationally acclaimed architect Shri Balkrishnabhai Doshi visualized & designed the museum and the same was inaugurated in 1984. Some of the renowned art collectors are honoured by the Museum by naming gallaries after them : The ‘Muni Punyavijayaji Gallery’ includes the choicest compilation of paintings . Some of them are the Champaner jain pilgrimage painting of 1433 , the Agra Vijnaptipatra by Mughal painter Ustad Salivahana in 1610 . Highly appreciated illustrated manuscripts which we saw here were the Mandu Kalkacharyakatha of 1430 , the Matar Sangrahanisutra of 1583 , the Naldamayantirasa of 1610 in Mughal style , etc . A rare cosmological diagram Ashtdvipa of 1440 was a gem. There were paintings of pre Mughal era in Western Indian painting style and some rare illustrated wooden book covers created for palm leaf manuscripts including that of Vidyadevis circa 12th Century . ‘Madhuri D. Desai Gallery’ holds in its collection the largest head of Buddha circa 3rd - 4th Century in stucco from Gandhara , the standing Visnu of the same period from Mathura , a rare small figure of Ganga from the same place dating back to 4th century , the earliest cult image of Lord Rama (early 6th century) of Gupta period from Devagadh , the Sanmukha Kartikey of the same period from M . P . , and some of the finest Chola sculptures circa 10th -11th Century . The ‘P.T. Munshaw Gallery’ showcases a rare collection of coins like the finest punch-marked ‘bentbar’. ‘Shri Arvindbhai Collection’ displayes Chola style Nataraja, a Nepali or Tibetan Bronze Mandala and Chinese or Japanese style cupboard in wood . Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai Collection of Indian Drawings from Calcutta represents drawings for Indian Miniature paintings belonging to various regional schools The museum not only showcases some of the finest works in history but also puts in efforts towards their proper conservation in the Conservation Laboratory , where cleansing and preservation works are carried out. A visit to Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum of art & archaeology made us humble as we learnt the great work carried out by our ancestors .

Well maintained and a lovely place for all the artists. They have collections of ancient statues, old hand paintings, coins from the centuries etc. It's free to visit the museum. Worth a visit. No photography is allowed inside the museum. There is a beautiful jain temple outside the museum and the pics belong to that.

Must visit. Neat, clean and very disciplined. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the museum. So I could only manage to capture the entrance picture. When I visited the construction was still going on.

It's an amazing museum with a pretty interesting exhibit. Many exhibits are well preserved and full of information. Its paradise for historical and architectural knowledge seekers. The marble sculptures can date back to the 2nd century B. C. There are also some metal Sculptures of different ages. The paintings consist of different Era's, they are painted on both paper and clot scroll. There is also a coin collection of different empires. The entry is free and is open to all. As they have a no photography policy you will have to personally go and have a look at the collection. And if you are lucky you can also see a few peacocks outside the museum.

Museum with a huge collection of paintings, sculptures, Jain statues (mainly relics and statues of ancient India related to Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism), If anyone interested in studying old statues, can spend an hour there but it is not on tourist must see list when in Ahmedabad. Located near Gujrat University with connected BRT Public transport and 1.5 km away from Ahmedabad Metro.

It is an extraordinarily curated museum with a huge variety of display items from paintings to stone to bronze statues. Would recommend phoning in a day or two before to get a guided tour which starts at 11A.M. everyday. The staff is super helpful and sweet too.

Well maintained and no fee for visit, cordial staffs, various schools of painting of medieval era, pre Mughal ,Mughal and post Mughal paintings (Kishangarh, Malwa, Mewar, Pahari, Bundelkhand style of paintings, etc) and other historical sculptures (bronze, red sandstone from mathura school of art, stucco from Gandhara school of art, cist sculpture, iron sculpture )from Jainism and Budhhism , Pala dynasty, solanky vaghela period, wooden carvings and many more. A treat for historical enthusiasts, though boring place for other people because photography not allowed inside. You can purchase greeting cards, books, diaries, etc , that may be their only source of revenue.

Abbreviated as L.D Museum, the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum has Indian sculptures, bronzes, manuscripts, paintings, drawings, miniature paintings, woodwork, beadwork and ancient and contemporary coins. It was established in 1984. The museum is an outcome of visions of Muni Punyavijayaji, an erudite monk scholar and Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai, the well-known industrialist of Ahmedabad. The museum is located on the premises of the L.D. Institute of Indology. All the major regional styles of the sub-continent find their place on the ground floor in Madhuri D. Desai Gallery. The museum has finest paintings in Gujarati Jaina Style, some of which are older than Mughal Period. The paintings find their place on the 1st floor of the Museum Building. In its eastern wing of the Muni Punyavijayaji Gallery, there is a section displaying the Leelavati Lalbhai Woodwork Collection. The museum houses 76,000 handwritten Jain Manuscripts (500 illustrated versions) and 45000 printed books. This makes it as the largest collection of Jain scripts. The old books are written in languages such as Sanskrit, Pali, Old Gujarati, Apabhramsa, Hindi and Rajasthani.

Since its inception in 1956, the L. D. Institute of Indology has been collecting and preserving rare manuscripts and artifacts of various kinds, some of which are handed over to the L.D. Museum. The Museum is the product of the vision and energy of two remarkable persons who were responsible for its establishment: Muni Punyavijayaji, an erudite monk scholar and Sheth Kasturbhai Lalbhai, the well-known industrialist of Ahmedabad. As the collection grew over the years, the Board of Trustees (of the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Bharatiya Sanskriti Vidyamandir), felt strongly the need for a separate museum building to house the display of its collection. Consequently, a new museum building was built adjacent to the existing building of the Institute, which was also designed by the internationally acclaimed architect, Balkrishna Doshi. The collection in the new museum building was opened to the public in 1984 and was formally inaugurated by Braj Kumar Nehru (Governor of Gujarat) in 1985.

But it's not, it is amazing and covers a lot of aspects from Hindu and Jain religion. Take out at least 2 hrs. From busy schedule, don't ignore, it's on the main road.

Beautiful 20th century modern architecture building. Reminds me of Chandigarh. Decent collection of statues, sculptures, artefacts etc. Good place to take kids and enlighten them about Indian heritage. Navgrah statue of 9th century shows that our ancestors were very well aware about Solar system and Space. We knew that our solar system has 9 planets, much before European countries claimed to find that.

The collection of Sculptures and Paintings and Coins is Amazing. The atmosphere is very quiet and dark and yet enjoyable. The place is very clean and the staff is well mannered and helpful. If you appreciate art, do visit with more hours in hand. My time flew away looking into minute details and carving that's why I'll have to visit again, for getting lost into details of beautiful paintings. I want to thank the management from the bottom of my heart for providing such an excellent place for art lovers in Ahmedabad. A request, photography is not allowed inside the Museum, kindly avoid it. Be in the present and live it with your eyes rather than capturing through screens. Thanks and Kudos.

The museum is quiet small, around the museum is lush greenery. From the outside the museum looks very bland. It has no colour on it and has only grey discoloured concrete walls so if you have trouble finding it from the road then look for an old bland looking building. Other than that the museum from the inside is quiet intriguing and fascinating.
