All traditional Gujarati cloths and ancient dresses as well as the fabric works and the work of art which is done only by a fixed family like Patan Ka Patola, Mata Ni Pachedi, as well as the tradition of regular clothing styles of common and kings are seen hear. Traditionally how the clothes are used in regular days and all are seen. Carpets, wall clothes, hand fans, and many more are seen over here. Some disappeared art work are seen like carving, wooden Home, way of living styles, instruments of doing the art. Blok's are also seen over here by which we can see how block printing is done and what are the effect on fabric. I think I had a great opportunity to have visited over hear. And i must say that Amdavadi people please visit the museum. Please do registration before the visiting the museum.

Yesterday afternoon 2:30 to 4:40 time slot we 7 members visited the Calico textile Museum. We got permission just one day before but I was asking for the permission last one month. It's worth going and witnessed the textile heritage of our beautiful country. The guided tour was wonderful. Each peace is a master piece and kept very well. I'm mesmerized by the colors. They gave tea n boiled peanuts at the end of the tour. Must visit place in Ahmedabad. I wish only one piece they would allow as a memory.

The museum houses a large collection of not just embroidered, painted or interestingly woven textiles but other masterpieces as well, including bronzes, carved woodwork, and more. Nobody is allowed into the museum just like that: you need to join a guided walk in order to visit. These walks are free, but you have to register on their website at least a month in advance, and then take along, on the day of the walk, the confirmation you would have received in response to your registration. You have to deposit all your belongings at the gate, even mobile phones (no photographs at all are allowed). The walk we went on, two hours' duration, began at 10:30 and took us through galleries of kalamkari, pichwai, Mughal miniatures, South Indian bronzes, Buddhist thangkas, and an exquisite 200-year-old Jain temple which was reassembled here at the mansion. The walk ended at a series of galleries explaining different methods and techniques of textile production and decoration. Two walks a day are organized by the museum. Though the staff's attitude is unhelpful and standoffish, at least the collection is beautiful.

I'm a hobby fashion designer who loves texting and different kinds of fabric. This museum is a treasure of fabric where we can see all kinds of block prints embroidery and pure gold threads viewing pure silk fabrics. They kept so may old raja maharajas cloth which they preserved. Main thing is if u want to visit the place you shd book previously in website or u shd send a mail, mail ID provided in website, other wise they will not allow inside. It's like a fabric tour. You should reach before 10.30Am, after that not allowed. A guied will take u to a tour by explaining all kinds of fabric embroidery and the time in which they used.

Don't bother to visit this place. They are not only disorganised and unprofessional, they treat visitors with contempt and arrogance. Three of us had booked a tour by email more than a month in advance. We each got mail acknowledgement of our request, and were informed that we would receive a confirmation mail. None of us got that confirmation mail. We arrived at the venue with the initial mail. The large gate was firmly closed. There were a total of just 10 people including a few tourists from Thailand. The guard rudely told us that without the confirmation mail he wouldn't let us in. One solitary person was let in because only she had the confirmation mail. All of us left, bitterly disappointed and with a poor impression of the Calico museum of textiles. Their internal inefficiency resulted in this situation. Yet they behave with pride and haughtiness towards tourists. They are doing a disservice to the image of Ahmedabad as a UNESCO heritage city. It's not worth the trouble going there. The House of MG Heritage hotel has an excellent collection of textiles as well as craft. And they are welcoming and warm. I would recommend that place rather than Calico museum to anyone wishing to see traditional textiles and craft.

I attended both the morning guided tour (Haveli gallery) and afternoon guided tour (Chauk gallery) on the same day and it was a one of a kind experience. If you are an art/ heritage/ textile enthusiast / into antique items / into fashion design, this is a place you will love and relate to. 10/10 for their collection, research and eagerness to generate awareness about our cultural heritage. Here is what to expect when you plan a visit here or sign up for their tour: - You need to reserve your date and tour through the online form in their website and you get to attend only if they have sent a confirmation mail. I reserved a month before the planned visit date, sent a follow up email to them after 2 weeks and received the confirmation only the previous night of the planned visit. - If you are a group with n people, each one of them have to register separately. - It is a free guided tour and no entry is allowed without the confirmation mail. - Children below 10 years are not permitted. - Mobiles / electronics / camera and big bags are not permitted anywhere inside their premises and have to be deposited outside as soon as you step in. - They allow entry only 15 minutes prior to the guided tour. - There are stringent rules in place (like reserving in advance, no mobiles, etc) and they possibly have been put in place to ensure that there are zero distractions and the people who attend are genuinely into what they intend to convey. - The tour starts and ends exactly on-time. We are not allowed to leave the tour midway. - Lighting is optimal to ensure minimal light damage to fabrics. - You get to see a meticulous collection, research on preservation of various kinds of clothes, paintings, art work and even temple structures preserved for over 200 years. Their metal sculptures date back to the Chola era. - Our guide Kamiliben who showed us the galleries had possibly lived her life watching the journey of textiles over years and I could see years of experience being narrated as stories throughout the tour. - You can see peacocks and other birds happily moving in their garden. Even though I didn't take a garden tour, I could experience nature at its best and all this could be possible mainly due the absence of shutterbugs. - Boiled peanuts and tea are served at the end of the tour.

A unique collection, zealously maintained and guarded, displayed in a very different ambiance and in a stunning heritage premises. The walk-through with a guide to provide background snippets for some of the exhibits was interesting, but it would have been awesome if a theme, or a story or a continuity was maintained, especially for those who are not from the world of textiles. A brief introduction on the exhibits' significance and the tour route may have been helpful. An ice breaker for the group to introduce each other could have created a cohesion amongst the group members.

If you only have time to cover one attraction in Ahmedabad, this museum should be it (over and above Gandhi's Ashram). It is a private museum and no fee is charged for a comprehensive guided tour by a knowledgeable in-house guide and a very close-up viewing of a magnificent collection (not just religious textiles and costumes, but also other artworks). Totally worth the time. Be sure to book ahead as there is a tour quota each day.

"An Artist may visit a museum but only a pendant can live there". Calico Museum of textiles was renowned by the Sarabhai Foundation galleries and collections of sacred bronzes from southernmost India, Images and abodes of Indian deities, various manuscripts, sculptures and various kinds of ritual objects i.e Indian miniature paintings, the Chauk [Housed Royal tents, carpets[Kaleen], and ancient Maurya hereditary monologue of the great Ashoka, embroidered carvings and its techniques, Tibetian culture flag with prayers inscriptions as well as paintings, laughing Buddhas etc. The tour was divided into two parts, ours from 10:30 am [It is advised to reach earlier] to 12:30 pm followed by tea and some freshwater-soaked peanuts at the end of the tour. The tour was free of cost and it is also advised that online booking should be done 4 weeks before the time for the visit. The guide will explain most of the things contained in the museum throughout the tour. The Calico Museum of textiles was inspired by the pioneering art historian and philosopher Dr Ananda Coomaraswamy. After through 15th century when textile production and its trade centre got a boost a vision was to be made, therefore in 1949 this museum was founded by Gautam Sarabhai with the assistance of his sister Gira Sarabhai.

Important to know: to get access to the museum you have to send a request by email in advance (preferably a few weeks in advance) and then receive a confirmation if there are places available. The security at the gate was unfortunately unfriendly. The museum grounds are very beautiful. The park is very impressive. The tour was a bit long.

One of the best mueseum I ever have been. They have only one tour every day 10:30AM-1PM having maxumum 20 people. Their is entry fee only pre booking. The tour is very systematic ,elaborative, disciplined. The visitors are professional people. The palace inside is converted to nice mueseum having history of textile in India. One of the good thing is that you can't take mobile or any gadget inside.

Phones are not allowed inside. This place is a must visit. Its very aesthetic. The tour is if 2 hours and they also offer you tea and snacks. Other than the museum, the gardens Are very beautiful. The museum courtyard has a very huge tree with lilac flowers than spin and fall slowly and it is the prettiest thing that i have ever experienced. The museum has textiles from across India from different time periods and the guide explains in detail the story of that fabric. You have to book on their website and then send them an email regarding the same or else they won’t consider you for entry. Getting a booking is difficult since they accept only a few people every day and the timings are very strict.

DO NOT GO THERE WITHOUT READING THE REVIEWS The visitor is required to fill a form which is available in the about section of the museum google map page. Once you submit the form with your date of visit. The museum is supposed to send you a confirmation email(because a guide would accompany the group and tell them all about it). Without the email you cannot enter inside. And mostly you dont get the confirmation email. I thought must be some glitch and reached only to find out that they wont let you enter inside. And there was another group there who as well didnt get the confirmation email. So, I wasnt the only one. Its been a month and I havent got that email yet.

The museum was inspired by Ananda Coomaraswamy, who, in conversations with Gautam Sarabhai during the 1940s, suggested the founding of a textile institute in the city of Ahmedabad, a major trading centre of the textile industry of the sub-continent since the fifteenth century. In 1949 Gautam and Gira Sarabhai and the great industrial house of Calico acted founded the Calico Museum of Textiles in Ahmedabad, as the specialist museum in India concerned with both the historical and technical study of Indian handicraft and industrial textiles. Gira established and curated the Calico Museum of Textiles which houses a historic collection of Indian Fabrics. It is also the centre for design knowledge, resources, research and publication. In addition to this, Gira also designed the building. It was built around a courtyard to facilitate contemporary gatherings and functions. It was populated with traditional facades and other carved wood elements dismantled from old residential Gujrati Houses. By the early fifties the museum discovered its original intent, encompassed too large an area and concentrated its energies on the vast and vital field of handicraft textiles, devoting less and less time to industrial fabrics. By the second decade of its existence the museum launched an ambitious publications programme. The programme worked on two series, namely Historical Textiles Of India under the editorship of John Irwin, then keeper of the Indian Section of the Victoria and Albert Museum; and the second, under the editorial direction of Dr Alfred Bühler, fümer Director of the Museum Für Volkerkunde Und Schweizerisches Museum Für Volkskunde, Basel, who conducted a Contemporary Textile Craft Survey of India Inaugurating the museum in 1949, Jawaharlal Nehru stated, "The early beginnings of civilization are tied up with the manufacture of textiles, and history might well be written with this as the leading motif." And indeed, so well had the Calico Museum of Textiles fulfilled this brief that by 1971 the House of Calico decided that the excellence of the fabric collection and the invaluable research conducted by the publications department were such that the museum should be an independent society. The museum's publications, which have now taken two distinct directions, give some indication of where the next surge of activity will take place. While the number of publications concerned with historical studies continues and increases, the second direction has resulted in research and publication of studies preoccupied with the technical and scientific examinations of textile processes such as looms, dyeing, printing techniques, etc

Situated amidst spacious and well-managed gardens, the Calico Museum is one of the oldest textile museums in the country. Founded by a businessman, Gautam Sarabhai, and run by the Sarabhai Foundation, this museum has an exclusive collection of textiles and fabric designs. It also consists of artefacts, handicrafts and paintings brought from different parts of the country. The entire textile exhibition is spread across 12 rooms and is divided into two sections, one for royal and historic fabric and the other one has religious clothing. The historic section exhibits textiles used in costumes, carpets and other items in use by the rulers and courtiers in between 15th and 19th century. The religious collection there, has crafts related to rituals, religious clothes and temple decoration, among others. Miniature paintings, bronze objects and antique furniture are also on display in Calico Museum. Apart from being one of the prominent tourist places to visit in Ahmedabad near Sabarmati Ashram, this museum also attracts plenty of students and researchers. They visit the site not only to explore the history of textiles but also, appreciate and get into the details. The museum houses galleries giving information about various techniques and also, a library. Museum authorities organise workshops too, to help enthusiasts learn more about textiles, and in a better way.

This is a wonderful museum with amazing collection of paintings on material, embroidery , carvings and bronzes . The gardens look amazing although you do not seem to be allowed around them. It is sadly let down by the guide who is very strict and officious and not engaging. She clearly knows her stuff but doesn’t seem to have the skills to share this with the visitors in a helpful way. One of our group had visited 2 years ago and had the same experience with the same guide. It would really help the museum to get someone else guiding who is better able to explain the wonderful treasures it holds.

Established in 1949, the Calico Textile Museum located at the Retreat on Airport Road is the oldest textile museum in Ahmedabad. Started by the renowned industrial personality, Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gita Sarabhai, this museum was opened by the former Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The museum has been preserving various weaving material, an array of designer and colourful fabric from different parts of the country. Although initiated at the Calico House, the Calico Textile Museum was further moved into a part of the Sarabhai House called "The Retreat" in 1983. The museum is currently managed and maintained by the Sarabhai Foundation; an NGO organised by the Sarabhai family. Besides textiles, the museum also showcases South Indian bronze art, temple hangings, furniture, miniature artworks and Jain artefacts. The Calico Textile Museum also has gallery sections and a library as well.

Calico Museum is owned by Sarabhai Family. So basically your experience of it will be like visiting a royal home cum museum with lots of do's & don't at the museum. You need to register 1 day prior your visit through email. Once you arrive the museum you'll be body searched throughly & all your belongings will be taken away including mobile & camera at the entrance. The guide was a lady in her late 50's, she is very strict & have an unpleasant personality. Due to her the whole tour becomes boring and sour.

The place is just too beautiful! The building, the landscape, too good. Very large in area and so much to explore. Also, there are peacocks inside the museum area. Free roam inside the museum was not allowed, it was a guided tour. So, this is the only small flaw here.

The museum is amazing and worth to visit. Being a student of fashion or textile design one should definitely visit there and see the exquisite collection of ancient textiles and garments they have tried maintain over the years. I would personally prefer that book the visit early like before one or two weeks. Because it takes time to get confirmation mail in return and one more thing, Go to the museum only if you have got confirmation mail otherwise they'll not all

Couldn't get entry into this place as it's by appointment only & we missed as we weren't aware. A limited number of entries are allowed every day & you need to pre-book. So pls go prepared lest you be disappointed; going by the crowd outside we were not the only ones disappointed in not succeeding in getting an entry.

Place is worth visiting. Extremely rare artifacts, and textile related items on display. The display is rather crammed in very tight spaces. Forced to move through the museum as it is a guided tour. The person conducting the tour is with very shallow knowledge and not at all effective in her role as a guide. She is not interested in answering any questions and needs more training to do better job. For a free museum it is worth the trip, my comments are for the group running this museum.

The museum was founded in 1949 by the industrialist Gautam Sarabhai and his sister Gira Sarabhai. Ahmedabad at that time had a flourishing textile industry. The museum was originally housed at the Calico Mills in the heart of the textile industry. But as the collection grew the museum was shifted to the Sarabhai House in Shahibaug in 1983.

Great museum but you HAVE to book. !!!!! There is soo much in this museum but you will NOT get a chance to browse! ( Tour is about 3 hours ) You will be led from one room to another by a guide - who may be the curator as she is so knowledgeable and no one ever found out her name. Nearly all the 'textiles' are covered up with plastic and quite a lot of low lighting. No time to really read the descriptions and an army of people behind you turning off the lights and making sure you stay together. We didn't really know if the textiles had any value or not or if they were 'one-offs' or part of collection. Could any of the works displayed be bought now???? A lot of history is covered and vast majority of India is explored in textiles. The 'technical room' is even more interesting. (how material is weaved/ stitched or made) Again, a lot o see and you will be allowed to look at the displays but remember NO CAMERAS OR VIDEO ALLOWED AT ALL! So hope you have a good memory or good at making notes. I offered to make a donation but its a private collection none was accepted. The museum shop is basically a book shop of different styles of textiles - so nothing like textiles to buy or even silk prints or anything to buy - which is a shame as real crafts people in villages who are skilled at making this could get proceeds back to their collectives. Worth seeing if you like textiles and arts and crafts and have a spare morning free. Make sure you book! only 20 odd places per day.

A painstaking effort and an excellent collection to narrate the history and highlight our culture through the years. The Haveli which houses the museum is a heritage building. There are cloth paintings and costumes too. The temple recreated with the restored pieces from an old temple that was being demolished also showcases skills our artisans. There are tents, carpets and furnishings on display. It's a must see for everyone. However, you need to plan 5 weeks before and apply for visitors pass on line. The moment you apply, you will receive an acknowledgement. But that is not a valid permission. Please make sure you receive a confirmation email that you are permitted to visit. Please call up and get the confirmation if need be. Otherwise you won't be allowed. Also make sure to be at the gate minimum 15 minutes before that is by 10.15 AM. Getting the permission seems to be the most difficult part of the visit.

A must visit for one interested in paintings n cloth work. Actually an aristrocratic bungalow is made into museum .A guide takes us around for a full 3hrs. There is no entrance fee or tips, absolutely free. Snacks n tea is served after guided tour. Book for tour slots in advance.

We came all the way from Bangalore only to be told that we had to reserve a tour two weeks in advance! They don't have any concessions for one time travelers or tourists. Doesn't make sense to call this a top attraction when there's so much of bureaucratic red tape to get through just to visit a museum. Better to list this as a special admission and 'by appointment only' tourist spot instead of a top attraction of Ahmedabad. Very disappointed with our experience.

The museum seems interesting, however there was not possible to enter, as entry allowed by appointments only. Staff is very rude, the gate was shut in front of me and i was told to call a manager. I did so, but the manager dropped the phone in the middle of conversation, pointless. Beautiful premises, mentality behind. Unsuitable for foreign guests. As it is so private, unwelcoming and full of specific rules, It should be advertised locally only, instead publically on Google Maps, so nobody will decide to bother you in a different from your own way.

Absolutely badly managed place. Staff here is very rude. No courtesy. Please do not waste time by visiting here. Not worth. Online they say museum is open however when you visit, they put a board that the museum is closed. They do not even think of time wasted by visitors by seeing online timings. Moreover staff there are like goons.

I appreciate the museum is made available to the public and free to entry. I have heard many rumours about the staff being rude but I thought i will see for myself. Today I came to the front gate and the security demands my confirmation email, while I’m looking for it in my phone, he snapped his finger many times very loudly right at my face. I’m very shock and I feel terrible for a long time after. This behaviour is not acceptable and extremely disrespectful.

This place is a MUST-SEE for every art & culture aficionado! Hidden in plain-sight, the entrance door immediately evokes a nostalgia of old world charm. Once you enter, you'll be mesmerised by the Haveli grounds itself (look out for peacocks!) The interior is breath-taking and deserves so much appreciation for the efforts the foundation has made in preserving past glories & cultures. Displays are immersive and everything is explained by the knowledgeable tour guide succinctly. She herself was interesting, left me wondering about how her background & she knows so much. Pre-booking is necessary to visit, which can be easily made from their website. Suggest to opt for the afternoon tour which was more interesting to me and also allowed me to beat the heat as i spent 2 hours in the coolness of the Haveli. Very happy and grateful for the opportunity i got to visit. Note that this is NOT a place for kids to hangout or for those seeking thrilling weekend activities.

Excellent collection of vintage cars. Good information provided of each cars. Place and cars both well maintained. Separate section for kids to enjoy rides. A restaurant is also there to erase your tiredness after walking around. Only thing which irritated me was the people placed at every corner to check whether we aren't using multiple phones to click pictures. There's coupon system. One coupon per one phone.

This place is one of the most wonderful spots in all of India. Everything from the building, grounds and the content has been carefully considered. The only negative is that you are not permitted to take pictures. We where told that we could purchase books about the museum at the end of the tour but none of the books they have in the store truly take the buildings and grounds into consideration.

The Calico Museum of Textiles is located in the city of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat in western India. The museum is managed by the Sarabhai Foundation.

Had heard a lot about this place, but it has very visitor unfriendly entry policies. We tried booking a few days in advance as well, but did not receive any reply. The phones remain unanswered. The guard is extremely unhelpful and refuses to let people in even to talk to the manager. One is made to wonder if they really want people to visit. Definitely do not recommend unless able to book months in advance. Very disappointed.

The place is just too beautiful! The building, the landscape, too good. Very large in area and so much to explore. Also, there are peacocks inside the museum area. Free roam inside the museum was not allowed, it was a guided tour. So, this is the only small flaw here.

Absolute must see when in Ahmedabad for anyone with an interest in textile, design or even culture in general. Beautifully exhibited pieces in great variety. If you wonder why there are no pictures of the galleries on Google, it is because a visitor is not allowed to carry a cellphone or camera into the space. You can deposit them at the gate where the guards will keep them safe. Also booking in advance is a must and one must be sure to be on time. There is no fee for the tour. There are a number of tours each day of the week. Textiles, costumes, bronzes and even the gardens are a worthy visit.

The Calico Museum plays a vital role in preserving and promoting India's rich textile heritage. By meticulously collecting, documenting, and conserving rare textiles, it ensures that future generations can appreciate and learn from the country's rich artistic legacy. Housed within the beautifully restored Sarabhai Foundation building, the museum itself is a work of art. The stunning architecture and serene surroundings create an ambiance that enhances the overall experience, making a visit to the museum an aesthetic delight.

Terribly rude security staff and outrageous service. We turned up and was told we couldn’t enter without a booking. After asking many times not a single person came to help/assist us. Even after making a booking there and then and calling around 7 different numbers, we received no response. After emailing the office to come to the door to speak with me, they even refused, I had to communicate with them via email even though they were on the other side of the door. Bearing in mind there were NO other customers present it wasn’t like they were fully booked. Who has the time to book 2 weeks in advance as a tourist, what a terrible impression to set. Will never return here.

  • 5/5 Jinal S. 4 months ago on Google
The museum of textiles is home to some of the most antique and celebrated artworks in pichwai, miniature paintings from 500-2000 years ago, jain manuscripts, historic textile artworks of India collected by the Sarabhai Family in their own haveli which is now converted into this beautiful museums where art is preserved very carefully. Must visit by appointments through websites for art lovers. They do not allow on the spot entry, so book in advance and reach on time for the group tour. They do not allow bag or phones for photography inside the museum. The landscape and architecture of the haveli is a gem for architects and designers.

You won’t really get a feel of what decorative textiles are to Ahmedabad until you visit this phenomenal museum. Textiles are to Ahmedabad what painting is to Florence. I toured this vast museum almost alone since I visited right at closing time. Be prepared to be overwhelmed by the richness and beauty of the exhibits.
