The South Theatre in Jerash, Jordan is a well-preserved Roman theater that dates back to the 1st century AD. It was built to seat an audience of 3,000 people and is still used for performances today. The theater is located in the heart of the ancient city of Jerash and is surrounded by other impressive Roman ruins, such as the Hadrian's Arch and the Temple of Artemis. The theater itself is in excellent condition and its acoustics are still amazing. Visitors to the South Theatre can climb to the top of the seating area for stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside. There is also a small museum on site that houses artifacts from the theater's history.

The entire complex is great!! Coming in the arch of Adrien is nice but has nothing exceptional but the succession of monuments, the surface of the entire site really gives a sense of how great of a builder our ancestors were! The site has little shade, you can buy water on site so you don’t need to take too much water but the deeper you get on the site, the more expansive the water gets (up to 1.5 Jordan dollars for a small bottle). This is nonetheless worth it as you’ll see great ancient cities buildings you didn’t expect to find in Jordan! Plan for 3/4 hours on site as you go from one discovery to another. The kids had a lot of fun going through the ruins as in Jordan they benefit from a lot of freedom in what they can experiment!!!!

Beautiful stunning Roman architecture, superbly well preserved / restored. Amazing acoustics heard first hand as a local group was performing traditional musical instruments at the venue and the music resonated throughout the theatre.

One of the iconic historical places in Jerash and a must see when visiting the city. Just make sure you wear a comfortable pair of shoes cause you are going to walk on sand, gravel and rocky pathways along the way. You can buy your ticket right on the exit of the souvenirs market after the car parking, or right on the main entrance of the historical city. There are many other places to see during the visit such as the main square, columns street, northern theater and many others.

Southern Theatre. Most of the ancient Roman cities, invariably had a hippodrome and a amphitheatre for public entertainment. Archaeological site of ancient Roman city of Gerasa, Importance if this city can be gauged by inference by the fact that it not only had a Hippodrome but also had TWO amphitheatres on in the northern part and one in the southern part of the city. We visited southern Theater. During my travels in Italy, Jordan and other parts of the world this amphitheater was in the best preserved condition. Climb right top is a bit tiring but once there the panoramic view of the thearte and the surroundings is extremely rewarding.

The North Theater was built in 165AD. In front is a colonnaded plaza where a staircase led up to the entrance. The Theater originally only had 14 rows of seats and was used for performances, city council meetings, etc. In 235AD, the Theater was doubled in size to its current capacity of 1,600. The theatre fell into disuse in the 5th century and many of its stones were taken for use in other buildings

This is a very well-restored Roman amphitheatre. It's beautiful and spectacular. The views from the top are also amazing. When we were there, there was a Jordanian brass band playing classical tunes and the acoustics were very good.

Another fantastic attraction within the Greco-Roman city of Gerasa. An amphitheatre in excellent restored condition with occasional local performances.

I was enthralled by the impressive size and architectural splendor of this ancient Roman amphitheater having 2000+ seating capacity. Standing amidst the well-preserved ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of past performances and feel the cultural vibrancy that once filled the air.

Just around from the Oval Plaza, so not very far from the visitor’s center, we discovered the South Theater. Of the three ancient theaters in ancient Jerash, this one was the most magnificent in our eyes because it’s the oldest and largest of the three. The theater's towering limestone walls encircle a vast seating area. We also were impressed by the precisely engineered acoustics so that onstage performances can be heard clearly throughout the auditorium. The remarkable preservation of the semicircular seating rows and broad stage allows modern visitors to envision how grand a visit to the theater must have been in years past.

So historic and beautiful here. Don't miss it when you visit Amman as it's an easier drive to get here.

Totally amazing place. I visited during winter. So the entire theatre was empty. The view from top is marvellous. It gives you goosebumps to think about the history of the place. . Clean and well maintained. It is at the middle of Jerash city. Behind temple. There's a washroom next to it.

The Southern Theatre offers a unique and enjoyable experience that goes beyond the expected historical tour. The highlight of my visit was the local performances held within the theatre - a delightful surprise! Sitting high up in the theatre while enjoying the music, you get a breathtaking view of the entire archaeological site. It was a truly immersive way to appreciate the history and culture of Jerash. I highly recommend taking the time to experience a performance if your visit coincides with one. It adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the already impressive ancient theatre.
