(Translated by Google) Martyrs' Square is located in the Lower Kasbah in the Algerian capital. It has a great history, as the recent excavations indicate that the history of the place dates back to the Numidian era, and it was a group of palaces with a Greek character. During the French occupation it was the place of general execution of Algerian resistance fighters from 1830 AD until independence. Before that, and during five centuries of sea jihad in the Mediterranean, the square housed the largest market for European white slaves This square has been in the center of Algiers since its founding by Bologhine Ben Ziri. [1] After the arrival of the Turks in the year 1514 AD, and they began to build the Castle of the Kasbah, we found them preserving this square as a site for the markets in which all residents of the suburbs of Algiers meet. [2] This square was named before the Ottoman presence as “Al-Geneina Square,” meaning “The Little Garden Square.” [3] Then came the French occupation in the year 1830 AD to preserve as well this central square, despite the rebuilding of the city of Algiers according to the European architectural style [4] ·. [5] This square was named by the French under the name “Duke Dorlean Square” in honor of Ferdinand Philippe Durlian through his statue, who was installed in 1845 CE on his horse, after it was made of melted metal from cannons in the city of Algiers [6] ·. [7] As for the general French occupiers, they used to call it “the government square” [8] · [9] ·. [10] However, the “Algerians” were content at that time to refer to it as “The Oud Square” or “The Horse Square” [11]. [12] Immediately after the independence of Algeria, the name "Martyrs Square" was given to this square to commemorate the martyrs of Algeria since the French occupation of Algeria in the year 1830 AD until the end of its independence in the year 1962 AD, whose number reached about 10 million martyrs according to the statistics of historians.

Listed as a national monument since January 2008, it is threatened with disappearance, phagocytosed by the Chaabani City in Val d'Hydra. This is an interesting place to visit and gives a clear indication that Algiers is not a tourist destination. There is a massive street market which is fascinating to walk around however there are zero tourist or souvenir shops around the square or in the area. Its still a great place to visit to see how the locals live and see a few of the more iconic landmarks in the city.

Visited on a sunny winter day. Perfect weather. Lots of markets off to one side with a lot of licals shopping. I was told to watch my pockets here. Right next to the Casbah so you can keep exploring there. Good old and new architecture. A mixture of F rench and traditional architecture.

Where it was established between the years 1619 and 1639 in Ain al-Zebujah, with a length of 12 km, and this technique is a remnant of the hydraulic system "Régence d’Alger" in that period. There's a good side and a bad side. The square itself is good to sit and meet your friends, etc. The surroundings however are dirty and it's unpleasant to walk by. I usually see the good things of everything but I have to be objective with this spot specifically. If the government takes action to give a better look to this place it would be 100 times different. Let's hope it changes for the better.

Martyrs' Square remains a symbol of Algeria's hard-fought battle for freedom and serves as a gathering place for various events, demonstrations, and public gatherings. It holds a special place in the hearts of Algerians and stands as a reminder of their nation's history and resilience. It was originally named "Place du Gouvernement" during French colonial rule. The square gained its current name, "Martyrs' Square" (La Place des Martyrs), after Algeria's struggle for independence from French colonial rule, which culminated in 1962.

If you plan on visiting Algiers, I absolutely recommend to stop by la Place des Martyrs, which is located at the center of the city, close to the Casbah. It's one of the first spots that the French army took over when they came in 1830. They named it ''Place du Gouvernement''. In 1962, when Algeria became an independent again, they renamed it ''Place des Martyrs''. It's easy to get there by public transit since the metro station line 1 was recently extended. The location was surprisingly very clean considering that we're in Algeria.

It was called the "Martyrs Square" because France forced the 4,000 Muslim protestors against turning the Ketchawa Mosque into a church to leave the Ketchawah mosque and killed them in it, so God honored it with three historic mosques surrounding it, the Grand Mosque, the New Mosque and the Ketchawa Mosque

Martyrs Square in Algiers is a very interesting and historic place to visit. The square is surrounded by old buildings and is home to a bustling public market that sells a wide variety of Algerian products such as honey, herbs, toys, souvenirs, ceramics, and wooden products. It is a great place to get a taste of local culture and do some shopping for unique Algerian products. The market is a great place to find traditional Algerian crafts and handmade items, and it is also a great place to try some local food and drink. Overall, Martyrs Square in Algiers is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in experiencing the rich culture and history of Algeria.
