This museum is in a beautiful building and has thousands of interesting artifacts, and on Sundays admission is free. However, almost none of the descriptions at the displays are in any language other than Gallego (they're not even in Spanish), and the app that you should be able to download to get descriptions in Spanish and English (maybe French, too) is so old that it was incompatible with recent versions of Android; it wouldn't work with either my Galaxy 22 or my wife's Pixel 6. Another problem was the lack of seating. There are a lot of stairs to climb; many older visitors will find the museum strenuous and will find nowhere to sit until they've almost seen the whole museum if they follow the arrows on the floor. This museum is not recommended if you're only in Santiago de Compostela for a few days.

(Translated by Google) I would give another star if at least it was also in Spanish and / or English. But anyway, at this time it is in vogue to be nationalist and closed. Although those who put this fashion have not used any tool or implement in their entire lives that are in the exhibition. On the other hand, the application that you download to the phone is read, it would be more enjoyable if it was spoken so that you can see the details while you listen to it.

Unfortunately, the museum doesn't really seem to make an effort to bring the Galician culture closer to non-galician people. Else, I couldn't explain why all the writing in the museum is exclusively in Gallego and not even in Spanish or English for tourist visitors. As a result, the museum seems unstructured, or the structure is never really explained to the visitor (at least international ones). The audio guide in different languages doesn't replace the lack of information. All in all, I was very bored as a result and wouldn't recommend unless you speak Gallego. Replying to your answer below: Obviously I am not saying that the exhibition shouldn't be in Galician language. What I am explaining above is that in order to make the museum more accessible to people who don't speak Galician, you should include English or Spanish descriptions aside from Galician, or at least an easy way for non-Galician people to understand the descriptions. As it is now, I don't think people who don't speak Galician are taking away much from the exhibition. Actually, seeing how rude and patronising the responses from the Museum owners are to some of the other guests providing constructive criticism in their reviews, I definitely wouldn't recommend visiting.

Beautiful place with full explanations, yes, in Galician. To all those people posting negative comments here, know that Galician is a romance language that is fully understandable by speakers of both Spanish and Portuguese. If you can't speak any of these 3 languages, well, I am sorry for you. Y'all need to note that English is not necessary to us, that your culture is not the center of the world and that it is a mistake to assume that we all have to somehow serve you and your curiosity in your language. Tourists really get to piss me off. Just go anywhere else where you won't feel miserable anymore.

(Translated by Google) The museum is quite well documented and very interesting. I give him 3 * xq it is inadmissible that while in Spain, the texts next to the exhibition are written only in Galician. Spanish does not appear anywhere. When the staff are reproached for this, they limit themselves to telling you that at the entrance there is a QR code that you can download in order to have the information in Spanish. I think the right thing to do would be for the texts to be in Galician, Spanish and English, because Compostela receives many tourists, whether they are pilgrims or not. What I said, totally reprehensible and INADMISSIBLE (Original) El museo está bastante bien documentado y es muy interesante.

If you don’t know Galician, the building is the main attraction. The triple spiral staircase leading to 3 different levels is beautiful and mind boggling. The Building is beautiful. The displays show old Galician life and trades but unfortunately nothing is in English or Spanish. That seems to be a general theme in Galicia, whether restaurants , hotels, museums etc they benefit greatly from the pilgrims but prefer to cater to their own

I gave this museum 3 stars mainly due to it being a little bit stuck in the past (in terms of exhibit style and general presentation) as well as for the lack of reading resources in any other language other than Galego/Gallego/Galician. I think it’s great that the museum is preserving its culture and language like this, but for foreign visitors it means we miss out on a lot of information. I also would have liked to see some representation of life in Galicia now, as well as what the future looks like for the community going forward. But that’s just my opinion. Give this museum a go if you have a spare hour or two in the city on a rainy day, but honestly there are probably more interesting sites and attractions to visit elsewhere in Santiago.

Interesting museum about the Galician culture and crafts. You can buy a museum guide for €1 in English. The exhibition is only in the Galician language (not Spanish). Despite the english language guide, we didn't understand some details since they were left out of the guide. Bu, it was an interesting museum, and most things are understandable for foreign visitors since most displays speak for itself. My advice is to explore this museum even when you're not Galician or Spanish.

Very very nice and recommended museum about Galician culture. Such a shame there are no texts and info on any other language but Galician. It is not internationally oriented and we didn’t not understand much. If you come with elderly people or people who need to rest often, there are no resting areas or just anywhere to sit for a moment. Almost so half of the museum was closed for restoration and we have been told so only after admission. EDIT:Response to the owner on their comment. What COVID19??? My review is from more than year ago and there was no Covid back then! I was talking about general descriptions you have next to the artworks...And yes. Yhe museum was half unaccesable becuase of the restauration. That too was a year ago so maybe now it has changed.

This is an excellent museum housed in a former monastery with lots of details of traditional Galician ways of life and culture, and entrance is only 4 euros. It's principal drawback is that everything is in Galician and very little is translated. They have made the foolish decision that to sustain their language they will use it alone, which is not the way to convince non Galicians to be supportive. To explain you have to communicate. However, the saving grace is that for ONE euro they have an English language 50 page booklet that is superb, and with which I could follow everything and learnt a lot. It is so good that I have given them 5 stars regardless. Purchase of the guide is essential unless you speak Galician. I think there is a Spanish version as well.

We came for the triple-helix staircase, obvs, but enjoyed the rest. We particularly enjoyed the displays on castros - the pre-Roman settlements across NW Spain. We read up on them, and visited some later in our trip and really enjoyed it.

A mess. An anthropological museum more focused on enumeration than context, which clinically views a number of very limited sides of the Galician people overlooking the cultural relations with other cultures and in general lacking in context for most of the items exposed. The third floor (right now) is closer to what an anthropological museum usually is, but once you get there it's too short. Texts are dry, stopping you from getting involved in any way, and in Galician. The sacred art from the church is too hidden. The lack of mentions to the pagan traditions (and almost none of the religion influence, literature, almost medieval organisation...) was disappointing as well. I learnt very little and felt I wasted my 4 euros.

Very disappointing museum in many respects: unclear structure, old-fashioned museum curation which presents a very homogenous and non-diverse view of Galician culture, does a poor job in promoting the anthropological or ethnographic aspects of Galician culture to anyone who doesn't speak Gallego, and unfriendly staff who seem completely unreceptive to constructive criticism. I completely agree that having the Gallego language as the main language of the exhibition is important for the protection of Galician cultural heritage, but I think that if you really want to promote your culture to people from all parts of the world it would massively benefit from having Spanish and English translations on the walls, at a minimum. The app that was created for other languages is very poorly made, hard to access, has less information than the original text and is inaccessible to those without phones or internet (the museum WiFi was so poor I couldn't use the app). Without some major changes to the museum as it is and taking on board the many constructive comments received (the large number of Google reviews with these suggestions speaks volumes), I would definitely not recommend a visit to this museum.

It's a fun memory that I took the whole morning trying to locate this museum and ended up first half wandering at the park nearby. I would say that the signboard isn't really standout to me. The staff was soo nice giving me a reduced price ticket (1.5 euro) even though I was just a student far far away from this city. Came for the staircases but definitely need more time to explore. There's little or no English text display so make sure to download google translate before your visit.

Only very few explanations in English. They tell you you can download an app, but in my case I couldn't because I don't come from a subset of countries (?!). In the end, they have a lot of artifacts but you can see the same for free in Melide. No pilgrim discount. Receptionist lacks friendliness.

I am so glad we visited this lovely, well-lit, spacious and clean museum during our short stay in Santiago de Compostela! We learned so much about the local culture, history and archaeology in just a couple of hours, thanks to good signs that had many translations from Galician to Spanish and English. The video of the beautiful natural scenery taken from drones, with the locations shown on the map, made me want to come back and spend much more time in A Coruna on my next visit in Spain. I wish I had asked about the history of the triple helical stairway! It was amazing.

(Translated by Google) The foundation of the old Bonaval convent is attributed to San Domingos de Guzmán, who in 1219 made a pilgrimage to Santiago. It is located outside the walls, on the slopes of Monte de la Almáciga and near the Puerta del Camino, through which pilgrims who come along the French Way enter the Basilica del Apóstol. The conventual body, as it has come down to us, corresponds to the episcopate of Fray Antonio de Monroi, archbishop of Santiago between 1685 and 1715, and is due to Domingo de Andrade. The facade is of small proportions. Attention is focused on the façade, composed of two large Tuscan pilasters decorated with the author's characteristic fruit strings, which support a split curved pediment and frame the large lined door, presided over by the image of the holy founder. Above is the coat of arms of the Altamira house with a royal crown. Inside the building, in the northwest corner, the triple helical staircase is worthy of admiration, which due to its technique and structural audacity gives a good example of Andrade's virtuosity. Three independent ramps are developed in the same hole, which lead to the different floors. This staircase is considered by locals and strangers as one of the unique elements of Compostela's architectural heritage.

Wonderful museum in an historic building in a magic city. Worth the visit even if you are not interested in galician people, because it is situated in the ancient monastery of Santo Domingo de Bonaval, just outside city walls. It has a fantastic double spiral stairway which I think is one of the most photographed spots in Spain. It has a great number of exhibits detailing history and life in Galicia from very remote past to today, everything is well organized and explained. Fishing, clothes, woodwork and blacksmith exhibit are extremely good. Highly recommended, even if you have children, they will be fascinated by fishing boats. As a plus it is across the road from the very very modern building hosting Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea .

A bittersweet sensation with this museum. On one side I find the ethnographic information about Galician culture excellent (many pictures, dioramas and tools, really pretty to stare at). The format of the exposition is quiet old fashioned but that is no something bad per se for me. Keep in mind that this is not an history museum. Also the building is quite nice, a bit like a labyrinth, but with great charm. On the other side, as stated before, the fact that the exposition is only in Galician takes away many information for those that don't speak it. I get that the language is fundamental to the Galician culture and must be promoted and preserved but having these kind of museums that reach primarily to people that supposedly already know the nuances of the culture a bit wasteful. As many other museums it would benefit having Spanish and English translations on the panels. We were informed that there is a mobile app with translation but it's not currently working if you have Android. As a Spanish speaking person you can get by more or less but it is not a pleasant experience not knowing if you have understood the text correctly. That is my humbly opinion. Nevertheless I did not regret visiting.

This is the second time we have been to this museum. It is very well laid out with a lot of interesting material. I do think it is a weakness that the language used throughout is Galician although it is the Galician museum so you might say it is understandable. If you understand a little Spanish you will be able to make some sense of the Galician. Quite apart from the exhibits it is worth visiting fir Andrade's staircase and the church particularly the Gothic apse.
