Great little pub near Rawtenstall. A good pint of Robinson's served and nice food on offer. Bonus views from the pub garden of the East Lancashire Railway engines trundling through the valley below.

I've been known to be particular, however I couldn't fault the service or food. I really enjoyed my meal, in fact everyone enjoyed their meals. Everything was delicious, hot and cooked to perfection! Good homemade food. Car parking to the side and rear. Great outdoor eating area. Very clean throughout. No NHS or Bluelight discount. Will definitely be going back!

First time visit to The Whitchaff and it won’t be the last. Visited with my wife and daughter after being recommended by a friend. The bar and eating areas were excellent, very well presented with Comfy seating. The staff were very attentive and the attention to detail was impressive. The food was fabulous, very tasty and good portion sizes. Finished off with a coffee and they added a mini mince pie. Which was a nice touch. Overall very impressed and will definitely be back again soon.

Faultless. Well, my only niggle is I couldn't find how to make an online booking so had to call and call all morning to get through and book. Once here, food was above average for "pub grub", lots of choice on the menu. All served promptly and piping hot. You could pay more and get less, you could pay more and get more but you can't pay less and get as good.

Poor choice of wines and no wine menu was offered, ordered whiskey and was not asked which whiskey was preferred. No one checked to see if the food was ok once it had been delivered to the table and no dessert menu or coffee was offerred after the main meal. Staff were pleasant but appeared inexperienced, other than that the food was very nice although a little on the expensive side, not a place to go for cheap and cheerful or general pub grub.

Really nice food, only would of liked it a little hotter. Spotless and lovely staff. Can't wait to go in warmer weather and sit outside as the views are gorgeous.

Very nice food. Excellent menu choices. Staff were attentive and friendly but a little to quick to walk off from the table before fully taking the drinks orders. Will certainly be returning though and recommending.

We went on a busy Easter Monday but the service was still flawless and the food really delicious. Fresh, homemade with lots of flavour and a great choice of specials. The pub itself had a lovely layout and we had a great cosy spot by the fire. Highly recommend visiting. In the summer I am sure it will be beautiful to sit outside with the views over the valley.

Lovely pub with fabulous court yard, but the food was a real let down. Starters were okay, but the steak tacos were bland and just tasteless. The salt and pepper fries were inedible and the worst I've ever had. Would probably be best sticking with the traditional pub grub items on the menu as they seemed fine and the burgers looked okay.

Went in tonight to see all the new decor and well as celebrate my mum and I's birthdays. Served mostly by Summer who has served us a few times and she always lovely and friendly. I can highly recommend the Chicken, Bacon and Parmesan Ciabatta and for dessert, the churros. Everything was as tasty as usual, maybe even better! Looking amazing and glad to be back in again.

Great food, busy. Popular. Reasonable prices. You get what you pay for though. So be happy with the quality of food and the price asked. Will visit again.

The recent renovation has really opened up the interior. Much brighter and more spacious. Varied menu and the food was delicious.

We visited the Whitchaff for a combined birthday / retirement lunch, we were quickly shown to our table for four and the drinks order taken. It was after the drinks order was taken that we realised a big issue with the new layout of the pub - noise. Large open plan rooms, bare (wooden) floors meant that sound deadening / absorption is minimal, the noise level became such that we had difficulty hearing each other speak. Our food order was taken very quickly by lovely staff and delivered to the table quickly on what was a very busy lunchtime, there was no issue with the food and there was plenty of choice from the menus but the dining experience was completely ruined by the noise level. Another issue is the price of soft drinks - over £3.00 for a glass of lemonade!

Sorry this is posted as Peter instead of Kay because I Dont know how to change it. The food and venue are really good, especially now it has been refurbished, my only complaint is the price of the soft drinks. Two small cokes and one orange and lemonade was over £12 The price was queried as to whether it was correct.

  • 2/5 James K. 9 months ago on Google
The food was fine and largely very reasonably priced. Soft drinks are absurdly priced though. £3.80 for a small orange juice. Appreciate pubs have to make money but this pricing isn't acceptable.

A very popular local pub with an extensive menu. We were there on a lovely sunny day and sat in the garden. There was so much choice we struggled to pick but were not disappointed. Some unusual dishes and good sized portions. Service was prompt despite being busy, and friendly. Dogs are not welcome indoors.

Food was perfect, not expensive and staff were extremely pleasant. All around perfection.

A superb menu including my daughters gluten free requirement, old skol looking pub with top quality large portion grub. Some interesting specials to add something different and staff well marshalled and knowing their job of service. A rare treat to find all these in one place.

Best pub in the area ! Called in today for dinner and drinks. Sat out the back in the garden on a nice summers evening. The staff are very friendly attentive. The food menu is very very good with lots of choices for all tastes. Drinks came straight away. Food arrived just at the right time and was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

Really don't want to share this place with anybody. Again as you guys know I only review special gems. Brilliant young bar staff exceptionally attentive and polite. Excellent pub food. Pub dark and cosy, can't wait till it's cold enough to put the wood burning fire on. Wish it was close enough to be my local. Sell done.

Strange one as I can only give this place 5 stars as the food and service were absolutely fab...beer still debatable but an acceptable range....the issue was that our experience was very clearly not everybody else's...as an example the next table had not ordered after 20 minutes.. chased drinks that did not arrive for 40 and when we left they had already waited an hour for no food to arrive....they had been given the drinks for free but nevertheless it was a hell of a wait....the staff were working hard but the systems in place seemed to be designed so that everything took the maximum period of time...as an example notepad to order then had to type it all into the till....why not just have a digital ordering system to save the inordinate amount of time typing into the till seemed to take....one great plus was the food...the katsu was exceptional.....

Visited yesterday 05/12 as a group of 12 friends. We were very well looked after and the food was absolutely delicious! I had the chicken katsu burger and sticky toffee pudding for dessert, a little on the pricier side but this is reflected in the quality. Decent selection of gluten free meals so will be returning with family members! 10/10 would recommend.

Went for Sunday lunch today. Pate to start with, so tasty, followed by the best roast beef I have had for a very long time. The staff are very attentive making sure all is OK on each course. I even asked if I could bring the pate home as I didn't want to waste it and they obliged by putting in a pot and covering it. Thank you to all.

Beautiful revamp, but would like to see more vegetarian options plus GF/LF. No non dairy "milk" though the Chef did provide a Vegan Curry when asked.

What a great pub with great staff, great food at a great price. A table for seven was dealt with quickly and efficiently and all food was delivered piping hot and was all very tasty. Would highly recommend a visit if passing by or if you live around the area.

Lovely food all seemed home made and to a high standard and plenty of it . Beer was good with a wide variety of choice. Nice atmosphere and a bit of olde worlde charm staff were efficient. I would have given 5 stars but it was absolutely freezing in there , it was my first time there so I will give it another try but if it's that cold again it will be my last visit .

Booked a table for 7pm but table wasn’t ready until 7:45pm. We then didn’t get our food until 8:20pm. In the meantime a member of staff tried to take away my glass which wasn’t empty. I ordered medium rare sirloin steak but it was bordering on well done and was tough. Presentation of my meal looked like it had been thrown on the plate. The chips were nice though 😊 I ate most of my meal as I was very hungry by the time I got it and I didn’t want to have to wait for a replacement or go elsewhere as we needed to get home to our puppy. When the waitress collected our plates we were asked if everything was ok so I was honest and said that my steak was tough. She spoke to her manager, came back with a dessert menu and offered us free desserts. I said we didn’t want desserts so she just said, “sorry about that “ and started to walk away!!!!! I said, “Is that it?” So she said she would speak to her manager again. The outcome was that they knocked off the price of two drinks. They said they couldn’t knock off the price of my meal as I had eaten most of it. I explained that we had waited an hour and 20 minutes, I was very hungry and we weren’t expecting to be out for so long as we had to get home. The food wasn’t inedible, just nowhere near as good as it should have been. Also several children were being allowed to run around the restaurant, chasing each other, which, in my mind is wrong from more than one aspect. It’s a shame as we used to enjoy eating at The Whitchaff previously. In my opinion it isn’t anywhere near as good as it used to be. We won’t be going back.

Rang and booked table for 6pm for 3 people. Arrived at 5.40 to have pre meal drinks, we sat at a table in the bar area and was told we couldn't sit there as the table had been booked, told had to stand at the bar. At 6pm was shown to our table, and guess yes it was the table we had sat at on arrival in the bar we were told had to be done within 2 hours as table rebooted but could stand at bar for drinks with friends after. Nothing on the menu that was not fried, realky bad. After eating asked as it was 8 and we had friends meeting for drinks could we stay there advised no and no tables free. Later told could sit at the slab on stools and would be advised if a table became free. No-one else came in, so all tables free. Still not allowed to sit at one. After 1/2 hour and in considerable pain, I advised staff and that I had a spinal condition, within seconds we were allowed to sit on the comfiest of seating thus is disgusting and should not have been the case. Staff were bordering out and out rude, obstructive and awkward food terrible as very poor menu. Having booked I would have expected to be seated in the restaurant side, or at least given the option either at time of booking or on arrival. I had friends staying with me and took them there for a treat, I felt really embarrassed at the attitude and lack of politeness, rudeness and consideration of the staff as well as the extremely poor menu offered. The only advice I have is AVOID

First time at this venue. Seemed dark and in great need of updating /decoration. The food was good and staff very pleasant but we were made aware, whilst having tea/coffee that the place was closing soon giving no opportunity for desserts if desired. This was at 3pm in the afternoon!! Long wait for meals to be prepared added to time factor although we were told they were very busy. Unable to sit and chat following the meal.

Myself and my mum visited the Whitchaff for the first time today and what a lovely experience we had! They had a great selection on the menu and what we ordered was super tasty. All the staff were really lovely and welcoming, we were checked on regularly to make sure all was well with our meals and asked if we needed more drinks often. Our server Tom was an absolute superstar and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed in a friendly and very polite manner. We will definitely be visiting again when we can!
