Brief History: Bhadra Fort was built by Ahmed Shah, the founder of the city, in 1411 AD. The fort’s name was taken from the Bhadrakali Temple that stands nearby. The fort was also called Aark fort centuries ago. The British captured the fort in 1817 and used it as a prison until Independence. It was duly renovated in 2014 so that people could get a glimpse of history.

After Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 CE by Sultan Ahmed Shah I as the capital of the Gujarat sultanate, Ahmed Shah built this fort as the citadel. It is supposedly named after a Bhadrakali Temple within the fort premises. The gate here has a handprint on the stone gateway, which local devotes believe is the handprint of the goddess Bhadrakali herself. Many women passing by climb up onto the railing beside this and press a palm to the handprint, praying for blessings. We could only go a very short way up the main driveway to the fort because the rest of it was all closed off for renovations. This will probably take some time to get done, so it’s pretty pointless going all the way just to see the fort. However, if you've come to the Sidi Saeed Mosque, just five minutes' walk away, and if you're going to the Jami Masjid - about ten minutes' walk further into the old part of town - you can stop by here briefly.

Bhadra Fort is a striking monument that bears the hallmark of the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. Located near eastern banks of Sabarmati River, the impressive fort was built after the establishment of the Muzaffarid dynasty. Built in red stone, the fort is set in the walled city area of AhmedabadAn auspicious structure located within the fort called the Bhadrakali Temple enshrines Goddess Bhadra, a manifestation of Goddess Kali. It is believed that she is the protector of the famed city. The temple was constructed during the period of Azam Khan near the palace. Temple draws several visitors every day to witness the deity who is beautifully dressed in vibrant outfits. The remarkable fort houses fourteen circular structures, three big gates, three mid-sized gates and two smaller gates. The British East India Company installed a clock tower in the fort in 1878, which had a kerosene lamp for lighting it at night. It was then replaced by an electric lamp in 1915 by the Britishers. Bhadra Fort is open from 9 AM in the morning till 5 PM in the evening. There is no entry fee for visiting Bhadra Fort.

About the location: Climb up the Bhadra Fort and get a bird’s eye view of the old city. Built immediately after the founding of Ahmedabad in 1411, Bhadra Fort now houses government offices and a Kali temple. Its gate formed the eastern entrance of the Ahmedabad citadel, which stretched west to the river. From the roof you can check out the imposing structure and views of the surrounding streets. Between the fort and the Teen Darwaja (Triple Gateway) to its east was the Maidan Shahi (Royal Square), where royal processions and polo games took place.

Located at the walled city of Ahmedabad, the 44 acre-Bhadra fort composes of intricate carvings, latticework and frescos alongside impeccable arches and inscriptions at the entrance. Built in 1411 by Ahmed Shah I, the walling is said to have been established to protect the Gujarat Sultanate, reigned by Ahmed Shah I at the time. Also known as the Arak Fort, the Bhadra Fort is said to inherit its names from the Bhadrakali temple installed by the Marathas here. This red stone-fort located along the Sabarmati river was revamped by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (the AMC) and the Archaeological Survey of India (the ASI) in 2014. Bhadra Fort is also an important venue for significant events such as the Republic Day and the Independence Day of the country.

Beautiful ancient monument in Ahmedabad City surrounded with street market and busy roads. Bhadrakali Mandir is located at the east side of fort, near Lal Darwaja. Teen darwaza is in front of Bhadra Fort, around 500 meters away. Huge street market is spread in and around this entire area A very busy and happening place. We can buy variety of items at cheaper rates here. However one thing to note that the people selling the goods are very smart to find out whether you are hard core Gujarathi or coming from outside. If you are from any other state, within seconds they understand that you are an outsider.. and hike the prices immediately. They don't even bargain and will convince you to whatever prices they want. The same item, a typical local person, with hard bargains, can buy in half of the price. Hence better to go there along with a hardcore local person to get good bargains.... Anyhow, if we keep on walking along the street and check the prices, at some or the other point we get cheaper rates and a good deal. While hiring auto rikshaw in Ahmedabad, it is always advisable to book ola rikshaw wherein prices are fixed. There is no proper parking place, even for two wheelers in this area. Hence better to use public transport of auto rikshaw / taxi. Bhadra fort looks awesome and strong structure from outside.

Another architectural marvel built during the reign of Sultan Ahmad Shah is the majestic Bhadra Fort. Spread over an area of about 43 acres, it comprises of a beautiful palace, a mosque, an open courtyard, 14 towers and a temple of Bhadrakali. Legends also say that Goddess Lakshmi appeared and blessed the city to remain wealthy always. Thus, it’s believed that the fort contains hidden treasures. Most of the construction inside the fort have been done with red coloured stones and bear the influence of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The fort served as the royal court. And the nearby royal square – Maidan-e-Shah, used to be the venue for games and other events related to the kingdom. Mughals took it over in 1573 and developed it further. You can still get a glimpse of the Mughal architecture in the carved arches and decorated balconies. Peshwas and Gaekwads invaded it later, in 1583, to establish the Maratha Empire. The historical Teen Darwaza acted as the entrance to the fort in those days. Afterwards, British held Bhadra Fort from 1817 until the country's independence. It has got a long historical timeline to explore, which makes this place one of the noteworthy sites to visit in Ahmedabad. It’s situated at a walking distance from Jama Masjid.

Bhadra Fort is an iconic historical landmark in Ahmedabad that undoubtedly deserves a 5-star rating. Steeped in history, this fort offers a glimpse into the city's rich past. The grand entrance and imposing architecture immediately command attention. Within its walls, you'll find a beautifully restored royal palace and government offices, allowing visitors to step back in time and explore the regal heritage of Gujarat. The fort's central courtyard is a hub of activity, with locals and tourists alike, making it a fantastic place to soak in the vibrant culture of Ahmedabad. Bhadra Fort's historical significance and architectural beauty make it an essential stop for anyone seeking to understand and appreciate the city's heritage.

Historical landmark built during the Sultanate Period but now looks like an open crowded market and has lost its original character. Could not locate the entry point, hence saw only the outer façade and ASI it seems is least interested in maintaining the fort. Encroachments everywhere. Guess, to get a clear view of the fort one needs to visit before 8AM when the vendors are yet to set shop. As a tourist, one can skip this and there are other major attractions nearby where time can be spent well. For those into shopping, this place is heaven.

Old memories of fort of Amdavad It's nice to visit it again and again... But as this is a heritage site, we must take care of it... Very huge crowd of public regularly visit here due to Bhadrakali Mandir... It's unique but not explored place of Ahmedabad... Mostly people seen it from outside Only outside view available... But the construction and base are so powerful that you can feel it's strength... Will take more pics of this and make available in short time...😊😊😊
