The
Church
of
Saint
Martin
of
Tours
is
a
Catholic
temple
in
the
city
of
Madrid,
Spain.
It
is
located
on
Desengaño
Street,
overlooking
the
Plaza
de
Santa
María
de
Soledad
Torres
Acosta
(better
known
as
Plaza
de
Luna,
de
la
Luna
or
de
los
Luna),
thus
being
one
of
the
most
central
churches
in
the
city.
capital,
since
it
is
located
a
few
meters
from
the
Gran
Vía
and
the
Plaza
de
Callao.
Due
to
its
architectural
value,
it
was
declared
a
Monument
of
Cultural
Interest
in
1995.
The
parish
of
San
Martín
was
one
of
the
oldest
in
Madrid.
It
was
originally
located
in
the
Plaza
de
las
Descalzas,
in
front
of
the
Royal
Monastery
of
the
same
name,
having
been
founded
in
the
12th
century
as
a
Benedictine
monastery.
The
architectural
complex
of
the
convent
and
the
church
lasted
until
the
19th
century
without
major
vicissitudes.
During
the
reign
of
Joseph
I
Bonaparte,
and
in
compliance
with
the
king's
mandate
that
open
spaces
be
opened
in
the
center
of
the
city,
the
church
was
demolished.
The
name
and
tradition
of
the
parish
were
transferred
to
the
current
building
in
1836,
during
the
confiscation
of
Mendizábal,
occupying
what
until
then
had
been
the
Portacoeli
Convent
of
the
Congregation
of
the
Minor
Regular
Clergy,
founded
in
1648.
Previously
(1809)
The
two
convents
that
this
order
had
in
Madrid
had
been
merged
into
this
one,
that
is,
that
of
the
Holy
Spirit
of
the
Carrera
de
San
Jerónimo
(the
Congress
Palace
takes
its
place)
and
that
of
Portacoeli
itself.
