Beautiful Action museum that explains, with some.words, the evolution of the aviation in the emirate of Sharjah. You can learn about aircraft used back in time, how long it was to fly from UK to Sharjah, and a lot of other amazing things. The aircraft in the Hangar are beautiful well taken care of. As a plus the newly opened exhibition for the 90 years is filled with knowledge and amazing old pictures that will take you to past times! Visiting with kids is also a great experience. The staff was committed to explain all things to my curious kids and gave them activities...

I love the way Sharjah preserves its heritage. This is one of the very first airports in the region. And now you can see most of the original aircraft used back then, displayed within the airport building itself. Gorgeous! Then you take a tour of everything that flies, from insects and birds, to prehistoric animals and humans. A beautiful trip into the past century

Once the old sharjah airport, today it has been transformed into a museum. It's in a location that might cause other people to pass by without noticing but without a doubt this place is a great place to visit to see about the history of aviation in UAE. It has many of the famous and commonly used once upon a time aircrafts. Definitely would recommend

It was a poor experience. I had 2 goals, to see the planes and to use the flight simulator 1. When i visited the hanger, after doing the whole round, my daughter wanted to roam around and take more pictures, but the museum attendant asked me to leave because he wanted to go somewhere. Its not really my problem if he wanted to go somewhere since i paid to be there, anyway I left without saying anything hoping the next goal might be good 2. The flight simulator was closed for some reason and that made a poor experience even worse. Not just that but there were other things which were either out of order or non functional I wanted to ask for a refund on the way back but the reception window was closed.

On 14 March 2000, the Al Mahatta Museum was opened, to celebrate the history of flight in the UAE and the region. It also contains the first cinema in the Gulf region, inaugurated in 1945. Al Mahatta museum was known as Al Mahatta Fort ("the station" in Arabic) is located in central Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The fort was built by the Ruler of Sharjah in 1932 to afford protection for passengers and staff of Imperial Airways. It was the first British establishment on the Trucial Coast, after an agreement was struck between the British and the ruler of Sharjah in June 1932. It was also used by the Royal Air Force  in World War ll. The fort today houses an aviation museum, known as the Al Mahatta Museum.

Very nice museum depicting the aviation history of UAE. Got a great hangar with different planes which once flew over the skies. Not crowded during my visit. Very useful for kids and aviation enthusiasts. Fact that the museum building was the first airport in UAE earlier adds much more value. Free Car parking spaces available. Nominal fee if 10 AED for adults and 5AED for kids. 1 to 1.5hrs can be easily spent.

Interesting museum regarding aviation history, on the grounds of RAF Sharjah Fort. Several family connections to the aircraft on display, coincidentally, made the trip even more special for us. A pleasant, leisurely paced, experience, where you can get close to the exhibits. Plenty of history as you walk through the buildings, then an educational area for children to learn about the flight of pre historic creatures, insects and birds and their influence on the aviation industry. Well worth the visit. Entry was 10aed per adult when we visited, free if a senior citizen 60+. Some steps upto 2 exhibits, but, the majority is flat. Free parking on site. Toilet facilities available.

Fun little museum that records the history of aviation in the Emirate of Sharjah. The nose sections of the VC10 and Comet are a particular highlight. Another section includes the history of flight and its mechanics with detailed models of birds, insects and pterosaurs.

It was nice aeroplane meuseam. Its well maintained and is neat and clean. It was a old airport in sharjah and it was the first airport of the uae it is a good place and has a long history as the oldes airport in the uae. It has many things like old aeroplanes to old aeroplane engines, wings etc. It has many photos showing the flights that had landed there a long time ago. There is a control tower but its not open for the public. There are many activities hosted there now and then. Many school visits will be there. Its a good place for a weekend trip.

A Nostalgic Journey Back in Time: Exploring the Old Aeroplane Museum Rating: (5/5) Recommended for kids! Review: Visiting the Al Mahatta Museum was an absolute delight that transported me to a bygone era of aviation. As an aviation enthusiast, this hidden gem left me awe-inspired and filled with an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was greeted with a genuine passion for preserving aviation history. The museum's collection of vintage aircraft is simply extraordinary. Each plane on display has a story to tell, and the attention to detail in their preservation is remarkable. From the iconic World War II fighter planes to the elegant biplanes that graced the skies in the early 20th century, the museum's exhibits offer a captivating glimpse into the evolution of flight. The museum's layout and presentation are thoughtfully designed. The aircraft are beautifully arranged, allowing ample space for visitors to appreciate them from various angles. Additionally, the Al Mahatta Museum offers interactive displays and simulators, allowing visitors to experience the thrill of flying firsthand. Whether it's sitting in the cockpit of a replica or testing your skills on a flight simulator, these engaging activities add an exciting and immersive dimension to the museum experience In conclusion, the Al Mahatta Museum is a must-visit for anyone with an appreciation for aviation history. It's a haven for enthusiasts and a place that will captivate the imagination of young and old alike. The dedicated staff, remarkable aircraft collection, educational exhibits, and immersive experiences combine to create an unforgettable journey through time. I cannot recommend this museum enough, and I'm already eagerly planning my next visit

The museum was a good experience, the entry cost was 10 aed for 13 years and older while 5 aed for under 13. It's a good place and was not crowded when i visited, you can see the cockpit of a few old aircrafts and there are even old fossils of flying animals depicting how they evolved and how their flying mechanism works, there are 2 real life controllable demos where people can experiment with, 1 being how planes detect air speeds and another being how different angles of the wing affect the lift of the aircraft, there is a simulation room which i was the most excited for but it was subpar and not as great, you the quality and working of the simulator is very bad and the camera angle is very hard to control, it could be that there wasn't anyone in the simulator at the time we visited as there were basically no people but did not have a good experience in the simulator just looks like a free simulator with low quality graphics and controls, you are better off using the demo version of xplane if you are only here for the simulator experience. But the museum as a whole is very informative and enjoyable for all people. There are live sensor activated demos of modified aircraft engines to show the internals which move slowly showing the working and mechanism. There was an experiment about pressure but it was broken when i tried using it and it didn't look like it was doing anything. Overall I would recommend it and it is a lot of fun for everyone.

Very nice experience to go to the past. Was really surprised to k ow that in the middle of current Sharjah city, there was an airport almost 100 years back. The place closes 30 min than the time mentioned. So go a bit early. They mentioned a guide would be available, which was not the case for us. But that's mostly because we went to the end of the day. Entry is AED10 per adult and Aed5 per kid.

Good place .We had a fun family time exploring . I was amazed to see this old airbase now within the congested area of sharjah , it was once plain desert with nothing for miles around this airbase and planes actually landed here , it was an airport . I wish i could go back in time to see this place how from here you could almost see the sea in the vast distance and the aeroplanes landing here , thats what was in my mind throughout while going through the museum . This airport nestled between apartment buildings and shops and flats from all 4 sides made me wonder .

The aircraft hangar was the highlight. There is access to old aircraft's, and even a chance to enter the cabin of two of them. Information and history was presented in a very interesting way, easy to read and understand including short video. The place is good for about a 30 minute visit.

Great little museum, smack dab in the middle of Sharjah city. Based around the Mahatta airport which is obviously now unused after the city built up around it and the larger Sharjah international airport was built. The old fort and airport building was converted into an Airplane museum and should definitely be visited to get an idea of how quickly things have changed in the region. Following the Google map location, the museum is located behind an immigration building. There is free parking located in the complex, the security guard at the gate will allow you access to that as soon as you drive up to the gate. Ticket prices are minimal and once inside you will be ushered into the main hangar along with a guide. He/she won't do much more than point you in the right direction. The main hangar contains a mix of older aircraft with a Dehaviland Comet being the main draw. You can sit in it's cockpit and the interior seats of this ex gulf air aircraft. You will then be ushered through a long gallery of photos and a small aircraft themed museum. Finally if you ask you can be taken into a projection room with a video shot during the hay day of the airport and surrounds. Take a minute to see all the large buildings surrounding the museum and imagine how only 50 or slightly longer years ago none of what you see existed and how airplanes used to use this as a fuelling and overnight stop between flights travelling from England to the far East and beyond.

Very nice museum for all including kids. There's real aircrafts and history of the old Sharjah airport is presented beautifully. Although some sections are closed in this summer, but it's still worth(its completely indoor). I came to know from this museum that this place was an old airport. Entry fees is not costly (Adult-Dh10 ; child(2-12yrs) -Dh5). Fridays are open.

Al Mahatta Museum is a former airport that was active until 1997, and turned to a museum in 2000. There you can see the old planes and parts of them, you can also see old devices used in the flying field such as an humidity measure, the black box, a fire extinguisher, a pilot's glove, a pilot's notebook, and many more items. If you are interested in airplanes, this is definitely the place to go. Finally, as for the price it is 10AED for adults (13+), 5AED for children (2-12), and free for babies. I really recommend this place, come with your family and friends, and you'll have a ton of fun.

A very interesting museum as the (mostly UK-built) aircrafts displayed are no longer in operation, are well maintained in an indoors, AC environment and -mostly- you can touch and inspect them from a distance rarely seen in a museum… check the rivets on the wings, the shocks and rubber of the wheels, touch the propeller and tail wing… Very interesting is also the Photographs Gallery which gives an excellent feeling of what aviation was like in the region at the beginning of the 20th century. If you have even the slightest interest in aviation, you will be excited by this museum and spend easily 2 or more hours in it… This venue is literally where the history of the British involvement in the area (and the UAE history) actually began. One of the most interesting aviation museums I’ve ever visited…

The airport was used by the British Army during World War II (1935-1945). Air service began around 1920. Back then, Staging Airports were mandatory for rest and refueling between long-haul flights. The British Imperial Airlines, which operated two flights a week to India, used the then Persian - now Iranian - island of Hengan Island until the 1930s. 1951) The Great Airport was built. At that time, the airport rental agreement was signed for a monthly rent of 800 rupees (Indian rupee was the currency of Sharjah at that time). The airport was used by Imperial AirLines from 1932 until the construction of a temporary landing strip at Kalba in 1936. The airport was later used by the British during World War II (1939-1945) but remained in use until 1971, when the war ended. From 1971 until the opening of the present day Sharjah International Airport in 1977, the airport was used for passenger flights. Later, in 2000, it was converted into the museum it is today. In addition to the buildings built during the 1930s, only one additional building was built, the Hanging Aircraft Museum. Mahatta Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is currently under construction. Parking is free inside the Great Museum compound. The fee is 5 dirhams for children and 10 dirhams for adults. Admission is free for those under 2 years of age and over 60 years of age. A truly hidden gem in UAE, one of the highest points in our stay. Please reserve a good time to visit the museum, the preserved airplanes and everything on display. They made a wonderful job in telling the history of aviation, with rich presentations, billboards and real samples of objects and even flying animals. Should be awarded as one of the most interesting aviation museums available.

Mahatta Fort is located in central Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The fort was built by the Ruler of Sharjah in 1932 to afford protection for the passengers and staff of Imperial Airways. It was the first British establishment on the Trucial Coast, after an agreement was struck between the British government (on behalf of Imperial Airways) and the ruler of Sharjah in June 1932. The Fort was used by the Royal Air Force in World War II and the Trucial Oman Scouts before briefly becoming a hotel, a police station and is now an aviation museum, known as Al Mahatta Museum.(Wikipedia)

Al Mahatta Airport (Museum) It was my first visit to first airport in the region, built in 1932 and then turned into a museum highlighting the history of flight in the UAE and the region. It is an important landmark due to its unique collectibles that narrate the history of aviation from man’s first attempts to fly, to landing on the moon. It helps to explore the history of flight at the first airport in the UAE. The airport was used in 1930s as a staging post for commercial flight routes from Britain to India. The way they arranged the old flights, historical pictures, and shown how the wings of flights derived from bird’s wings are incredible. You will get the chance to watch a 15 minutes small movie related to the first airport. It’s an experience to know the history of UAE.

This well organized museum is a true tribute to aviation history and flying in general. The Mahattah Fort was built in 1932 for protection of passangers of Imperial Airways. The planes stopped here overnight flying to India and Australia. It is possible to watch the film "Air Outpost" from 1937 in the museum. The entire rich museum collection is related to flying, be it a bee or an Airbus.

This was my old school in the early 1970’s. It was called the Fort School, officially Sharjah Community School. We were in a classroom upstairs. Downstairs was an all girls school. The school went on to a new purpose built site in the mid 70’s and became Sharjah English Speaking School. You can read some more information about the history of the Fort in the items in the photos. In the final photo you can see the air traffic control tower in the background. The foreground was our classroom in the fort before it was painted and made ready for the first cohort of students. I think there were 13 of us. In the first picture, from 1974, we are doing a nativity play. I was 3 years old.
