Amazing place and must see to visit. Entrance is free and you can join tour in english. Beautiful place and amazing architecture. The Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in Kuwait. Its area covers 45,000 square meters, of which the building itself occupies 20,000 square meters. The main prayer hall is 72 meters wide on all sides and has teak doors. Natural lighting is provided by 144 windows and more and more...

This is a beautiful mosque and the heart of Kuwait City. What I liked best was the friendliness of the staff and tour guides. Also, there is a small but nice calligraphy museum on-site. My tour guide actually spent over 10 years in the United States and spoke excellent English. She was friendly and jovial, and a big advocate of Kuwait. She was very knowledgeable and answered every question I had. Although this may not be the largest or most beautiful mosque in the world, it's worth a visit if you're in town.

(Translated by Google) The Grand Mosque is a mosque located in Kuwait City near the shore of the Arabian Gulf. It was opened in 1986 AD at the direction of Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. Work began on its construction in 1979 and was completed in 1986, and the cost of its completion amounted to 14 million Kuwaiti dinars, and fifty engineers, four hundred and fifty workers contributed to its construction. The mosque was designed by the architect, Mohamed Saleh Makiya, and he chose to design it in the luxurious Andalusian style. The mosque covers an area of 45,000 square meters, of which 25,000 square meters are built, and 20,000 square meters exposed, which form the outer gardens and corridors of the mosque. It is the largest mosque in the State of Kuwait, where it prays in the mosque in the courtyards of the mosque on the night of 27 of Ramadan, about 170,000 people. From the administrative point of view, the mosque belongs to the cultural affairs sector of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, and the administration building is located on the southern side of the mosque. The current mosque administration operates under the slogan "A pioneering Islamic institution and a distinguished Islamic teacher" in harmony with the mosque's vision, mission and strategic goals. The worshipers go to prayers during Qiyam prayer, Sheikh Mashari bin Rashid Al-Afasy, Sheikh Fahd Al-Kandari and Sheikh Salah Al-Hashem. The Great Mosque consists of many parts that play its role in harmony and rhythm. On the one hand, it is hardly present in another mosque except in the rare ones of the world's mosques, and on the other hand it represents several original and modern creative architectural schools, with its distinction with some local touches and the Great Mosque is distinguished There are three houses for prayer: the main house, the daily prayer hall, and the women's prayer room. As for the main prayer hall or the main hall, it is square in shape, its length is 72 meters, and its area is 5184 square meters, thus accommodating more than ten thousand prayers. Huge crowds, and rises in the middle of this main hall, the huge dome that matches the largest domes of the luxurious mosques in the world. And sunlight penetrates through the gypsum plaster stained with white glass covering the windows of the rear windows and casts a wonderful shade in the goodness, multiple in colors, joining the dome lines written in a third pen on the Esfahani ceramics It is dominated by the blue color adored with lapis lazuli, and in the navel of the dome, the famous calligrapher Muhammad Al-Haddad - who wrote all the writings of the Great Mosque - ran in the shape of a sun disk with the beautiful names of God in white kufic script on a blue ceramic floor, such as the magical blue of the sea. The dome is surrounded by four small domes from the four sides engraved with Moroccan gypsum, hanging four chandeliers of crystal and copper plated with gold, which are Italian-made and each chandelier contains more than a hundred lamps, length of 7.5 meters, width of 3.5 meters and weight of 1000 kg ... The lighting of the prayer house is not limited The main feature of these four large chandeliers, but there are eighty German-made wall and ceiling chandeliers, whose glass is made of crystal, spread throughout the hall as if with the large chandeliers, the planets floating around the bright stars in the sky. The mihrab The main hall of the Great Mosque in Kuwait is remarkable in the main mihrab, which is the middle of seven mihrabs that lead the wall of the qiblah of prayer, dominated by colors inspired by the Kuwaiti environment, which are blue and yellow, and is covered from the inside with a flat surface of Moroccan zellig engraved with Islamic geometric patterns, and above it stands a verse written In a third in blue on a yellow background surrounded by another verse in Kufic script on Pakistani natural stone, while under the frame two columns of pure white Greek marble appear in which the decoration is spread in geometric forms. The platform As for the pulpit, it was made of solid teak wood, and its entrance is to the left of the mihrab. Its fourteen circular steps are hidden behind the mihrab inside the qibla wall. Daily prayers As for the daily chapel, it is behind the main chapel from the east side, connected to it in the building, and its area can accommodate five hundred worshipers at one time and is used to perform the five daily prayers and regular periodic lessons spread in most of the mosques of Kuwait after some prayers as the imam sees and fits the worshipers, and in this daily chapel is a special mihrab of Teak wood and its walls in the form of arches of Moroccan decoration and zellij hang from its ceiling nine beautiful German chandeliers (Original)

I advise you to visit him at the times of the visit, given that the visitation days are limited. Guard and security are tight in the mosque, and around it are symbolic sites. However, the parking lot is far away, but in great probability, access to some parking spaces near the mosque has been closed. Absolutely stunning attraction to visit in Kuwait. Whether you live here or are visiting, religious or not - it's worth the visit - excellent tour (for free) and amazing learnings. We will definitely go back with future visitors! For woman, if you don't have the right attire, they have covers for you to wear. Also have free water and orange juice available too.

Beautiful mosque...private tour (free of cost) is the only way you can enter the mosque as a tourist we understood. The tour guide was very good and well spoken. It takes anywhere between 15 to 30 mins for the tour as you want. Even if you want no talk from the tour guide but just want to click photographs, the guide needs to accompany you.

The Grand Mosque is well worth the visit! It was completely free and absolutely beautiful! Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. She gave us a ton of info on the mosque itsself and the history or Islam in general. Wastern travelers be aware you will need to cover tattoos and where long pants. Women will be asked to where hijabs which they will provide.

Very nice and big. Has huge courtyard and has tours for non muslims to visit. All are more than welcome. Parking is very hard though in busy times, if someone knows the best place to park please let us know. However now the other mosque Bilal is used de facto the main mosque of Kuwait.

Many mosques are rather plain. This one is truly beautiful. Worth the visit for sure. I got a terrific free tour, and was able to ask all kinds of questions about Islam, and Kuwait. There were no other tourists, so it was a private tour.

This tour was excellent! Our guide, Usama (sp?), spoke excellent English and described the customs of Islam regarding the mosque and prayer, a bit of history of the Koran, and some background of Islam. Some very nice ladies helped the women in our group get dressed appropriately. Prepare for all to remove shoes, keeping in mind the marble is cold! (at least in January).

  • 5/5 Gaylyn F. 1 year ago on Google
Visit @gaylynfernandes Instagram The mosque is usually not open to visitors. Watch out social media platforms to know when a tour is organized either in Arabic or English. The tour normally is free of charge and lasts upto an hour. At the end of the tour, the organizers are generous enough to offer water, juice and coffee for the attendees; again without any charge. Overall, very informative and beautiful photos experience. Do pay a visit if gotten a chance.

The most beautiful mosque I have ever seen. Masha Allah The craftsmanship inside the mosque impressed me. I will tell my expatriate Muslim brothers and sisters living in Kuwait to go and pray there at least once. There is no rush, you can go there anytime. But I will say Friday for Jumma prayer. Long live Kuwait 🇰🇼🇰🇼
