Margjelo was amazing! The best place to get authentic, handmade souvenirs in Shkodra! I grew up in Shkodra, and they have three very unique, special, handmade souvenirs from the region. First, and my favorite, the handmade silver filigree. I’ve been in the homes of the old ladies who spend hours on end, hand rolling silver filaments into works of art. The same goes for the handmade tablecloths and the placemats. All hand made in Shkodra. To make things even better, a few of the workers, both silver filigree and handmade tablecloths, work on site, so you can watch the makers hard at their craft. The two used to be produced and purchased in different locations, but due to Covid they joined up and got a storefront. They also have some of the venetian masks. There’s a large factory in Shkodra that makes nearly all of the so called “venetian masks”, they even print “made in Venice” on them, then export them to be sold. All in all, despite it being a bit outside of the city, it’s well worth the drive! If you’re looking for authentic, handmade souvenirs, look no further than margjelo!

My visit to the Margjelo manufactory and shop was such a nice experience. I contacted the owner through instagram to book a 2-hour private workshop in silver filigree jewelry making, and she was so kind enough to accommodate my special request. The artisan spent her time explaining all the details and techniques of filigree, and helped me create a pendant for a necklace that I got to take home. The workshop is a short taxi ride from Shkoder city, and is definitely worth a visit! I bought beautiful handmade items from the shop, and a pair of silver earrings to treasure. The people working at Margjelo are so talented and helpful, and made my visit to the workshop very special.
