In Augustof 2021 I had a large tumor removed along with a full hysterectomy. I am a disabled senior. I live on low income. I had to travel from Aztec for this surgery. My Doctor told me I could stay for 3 days. On the second day someone called me a cab and they basically kicked me out. The ride home was miserable. I got the bill for my copays a few months later. I called to explain my financial situation and was told there was a program that would take care of my co pay. They scheduled a phone appointment a month later , no one called. I called back and they verified they had the wrong ph number. So they rescheduled it . I questioned about it being past 6 months and was told no problem. So before that appointment arrived, I was left a message saying it was too late now and they couldn't help me. Through no fault of my own, I was I told will have to set up payments. I am very upset about this. Because I was treated unfairly and am already scraping to get by.

My son has cancer and we have been going here since 2019 to manage his cancer. The beginning was rough -- we were at Pres, but they clearly had no knowledge of his type of cancer. We found a good doctor at UNMH CC, he had surgery, and in our follow up she had no knowledge that the surgery was not successful. Quickly figured it out and put him on a plan, but that was disturbing as they'd let 5 months go by without any treatment and the tumors grew and spread in that time. And then she and the surgeon both quit. We've been with Dr. Tawfik since, and he's been great to work with. He answers all of our questions, explains everything, is blunt (which I need) and honest. He doesn't spend much time with us, but spends what we need. The whole care team of the cancer center has been great – from the lab to the imaging to the front desk. All very caring and very comprehensive – everything in one place with careful procedures in place during COVID. I do highly recommend the cancer center. The only downside is the doctor’s terrible NP. I believe her name starts with an S, Susan maybe? She is the epitome of rudeness and should not be allowed to talk to patients. She comes off as completely condescending, doesn’t want to listen to you, and is so rude I always leave annoyed. One time, my son touched his mask – she sighed and said, “Oh, I see I have to teach you too, I’m having to teach everyone. Don’t touch your mask, that’s how germs spread.”…. 2 seconds later, she touches her mask. It may be a great lesson, but the tone she uses shuts me and my son down instantly. She actually yelled at us in the last visit. Even condescending remarks directed at me, and she has no knowledge of my health history or anything about me. She needs to be sent to training to learn how to interact with people.

We drove 8 hrs round trip to go to UNM Cancer Center for treatment of my sarcoma because I was told the hospital was “top in NM and the US.” I stopped my (week long) inpatient chemo after 3 (of 6) cycles and I refuse go back!!! I wouldn’t recommend UNM to anyone. I waited 2 WEEKS for PET scan results. Almost another 5 days for the Dr to call with results. Then she was very nonchalant about giving me bad news and didn’t listen to my questions/concerns. I had severe chemo reactions and complications which resulted in spending more time in the hospital than I did at home. I constantly had to call to initiate insurance approvals and still ended up with handfuls of denials after treatment. Not to mention, thousands in unpaid claims while I’m not working. They have offer no support with treatment planning, transportation, counseling, finances, or any other cancer concerns.

I am new to this center and therefore don't have detailed information to impart except about scheduling for genetic testing. After months of waiting to be seen by an OB-GYN surgeon for an ovarian cyst (lots of rescheduled appointments!), the doctor was amazing. It's just that it's NM and I guess many doctors don't decide to move and practice here. Anyway, she referred me to UNM Cancer Ctr for genetic testing. At first the soonest they could fit me in was the middle of August. When I said the doctor wanted to do surgery in August, suddenly two slots on July 14th became available. I booked one. Once I saw the name of the genetics testing site, I did a bit of research and was able to obtain an appointment on June 4th directly with a different local provider covered under my insurance. I then cancel the July appt.... Listen, I am not belittling UNM Cancer Ctr. But one must take steps to care for one's self if you want to move your care along faster. My first ultrasound was at the end of January - so yeah, I am taking my care into my own hands where I can. I truly wish more doctors decided to move here to this amazing place so that no NM residents have to wait for the care of the amazing doctors who do decide to live here and care for us.

Dont bother! Husband had a Cryoablation on the fifth and the biospy came back over four to five days ago. Not one person has called him to tell him his next follow up. We only know he has cancer because of the online chart he can have access to. Ridicolous! I called today and asked why hasnt anyone called him? She hung up on me because I told her he shouldnt have to be chasing the doctor on something this important. The only one worth a hoot in this office is Dr. Fabre who explained everything! Looking into the Mayo clinic. Healthcare absolutely sucks in NM! They admitted also that his mass was there in 2018 but they missed it!

Very poorly managed and operated. One of the doctors had scheduled a phone appointment but failed to order the required scan. I called several times before the phone appointment to explain that the doctor had said I needed the scan before the appointment. Finally, the day before the appointment, the doctor's staff called to cancel due to the lack of a scan and informed me that the doctor had finally ordered the scan. I have called about 15 times to schedule the scan and the hold times were estimated at 49 to 58 minutes with between 9 and 19 callers ahead of me each time. By comparison, MD Anderson (in Houston, TX) is a well run and managed organization. While UNM-CCC is a joke. Updating my review...I was supposed to have a phone appointment with a pulmonologist/oncologist today. They never called. Also, I had a CT scan performed on March 1st, 2023. The results still haven't been posted online and after two calls the best answer was the doctor would go over the scan with me today, March 10th. This place is now not even a joke, they are just incompetent and cruel.

My Mom's oncologist Ursa Brown-Glaberman, MD kinda want too do a shout-out and thank her and the UNM Cancer Center for all the amazing care they gave too my Mom, not once did my Mom get treated like just another patient, everyone working there knew her by name, and that bedside manner means so much. I am thankful for the treatment that has made it possible to still have her here with me. To the pharmacist, receptionist nurse's everyone who has a part at the Cancer Center I thank all of you💕

They just do NOT CARE!! From the front to the back! DO NOT CARE! ZERO BEDSIDE MANNER! I hate this place. Literally dragging their feet and just want to use people as test subjects because they found something rare! Like WE ARE REAL PEOPLE WITH REAL FEELINGS and you guys have made me feel hopeless and helpless at EVERY interaction from the front to the back. Rude staff at every corner. Providers who don't care and will wait so long and risk cancer spreading because they don't want you to get test anywhere else to speed the process up. I will definitely be looking at other options. This place is looking for deaths not wanting help at all! The radiologist all of them go in and read your scan telling you your terminal and to go spend time with your family when the only thing this place has done is schedule surgery. How is one supposed to leave being told they are an impossible case. But we still don't have all the test back. I was told my case would go to a tumor board do to how rare, do you think ANYONE AT ALL has tried to make contact? This place is a joke and run like one. It's so sad to see this happening. Oh and don't get emotional there either. They will look down their nose at you like your over reacting. Complete jerks!

The doctors here are quite awesome once you get to see them. The rest of the system is quite horrible. Making an appointment is a nightmare. You have to call a call center and plan on getting a busy signal the first few times you try. When they do answer you will be put on hold. There is no way to view upcoming appointments on the portal. And checking in to see your doctor is like visiting someone in prison without the metal detector. You have to go to three different desks and answer the same question. If you answer the questions the same way they might give you a wrist band that you have to wear through the whole thing. Those do not come off without much effort. If you get past all that and actually get into the area where your doctor is you will be treated quite well. This could and should be fixed. The patient experience is not the primary focus here, it is liability risk.

The people from office people to the doctors are great. I am treated with care and when there is a question response comes within 24 hours if not sooner. The doctors answer questions so that you can understand what they are saying. UNM Cancer center is great place for care.

I've not spent a great deal of time at the Center thus far before now relocating to Albuquerque. When evaluating the city as a possible place to live and UNM also as a place for exceptional medicine and other care I need, I just had the probably the best initial encounter with the Cancer Center that I could have. Although we were on the road far from my treatment in New England, I believed it was time for an exam and possible followup treatment. I was matched with Neda Hashemi MD. We had the kind of initial appointment where I felt completely understood, that my medical needs were met and then with ease moved to additional areas of deep concern for me, I look forward to being her patient as we move here. She really is in the tier of 0hysicians whom I look forward to seeing, knowing that my trust, my medical and other experience, and my concerns will be foundational for our successes. And, the facility is beautiful and energizing. There are helpful staff built in, I found as I registered and prepared to use the Center. Smooth, professional, reassuring, expert, warm. Deeply impressive.

This is a horribly run hospital…2+ weeks to get scan results, 45 min wait on phone to make appointments, antiquated website that doesn’t post appointments or bills (what does it do?), no 24 hour contact…stay away from this place
