DO NOT waste your time or your money taking your fur babies here. I made the mistake of taking my boy there today for what I later found out was a herniated disk in his neck, which is VERY serious, but I was told it was not an emergency and that my dog was probably just “seeking attention”. I wound up sitting in the waiting room for an hour and a half. I went to ask one of the girls at the front desk for an update on my boy’s condition, and I was told, “You’re just going to have to sit and wait, or you can go home and we’ll call you once he’s ready to go home. But, the technicians have told us not to “bug” them unless it’s an emergency. They’ve been getting emergency cases around the other side of the building. So, they’re too busy.”, Wow! Okay. All I was asking for was an update on my dog’s condition, and THAT’S the attitude I’m given? Absolutely NOT! If you’re having a bad day, then maybe you should have taken the day off, or maybe you should find another job entirely, and if that’s the attitude that your veterinary technicians are going to have, then maybe every single one of them should be fired, and replaced with decent human beings who actually love their job, and who actually want to do their jobs. There was a lady who had been waiting there for 3 hours, and she received the same poor attitude that I did when all she asked for was a status update on her own dog. Another woman who had been on her way out after finally getting her own dog back spoke with my Mother who had been waiting outside and she told my Mother that the front desk staff were not at all compassionate or understanding people. I’ve recommended this place to my friends in the past, because I had heard only good things. I will not be doing that anymore. This place needs to hire new front desk staff and new veterinary technicians who know how to treat others with compassion and who know how to get things done in timely manner before I ever even consider bringing any animal of mine back here. Honestly, this place and Route 66 are the absolute worst “Veterinary Clinics” in the state of New Mexico. I wouldn’t trust them to diagnose a pet rock much less a living, breathing animal, I wouldn’t talk to my dog the way they talked to me and several others. Additionally, I had to go through not one but two of the front desk staff just to get my dog back after I had spoken with his regular veterinarian and explained the situation to them, and they offered to take him the same day. When one of the girls at the front desk handed him back to me, she told me that the Doctor had done an exam on my boy but that the Doctor had “comped it” since I was going to take my boy to see his primary Veterinarian. When I asked what the Doctor had found in their exam, I was told that they couldn’t tell me unless I was going to pay for it. Like holding my dog’s medical information that I NEEDED to know for ransom is totally acceptable. No! That’s malpractice. Period.

I cannot in good conscience suggest that anyone take their pet to this facility if it is an emergency. We had noticed that our dog was drinking an inordinate amount of water and losing weight. I took him into VCA on 9/2 but they refused to see him because his condition was not "critical" though I was assured that he would be OK to wait until the appointment I already had scheduled for him with his regular vet three weeks out. On the day after Labor Day his weight loss had worsened, he had started vomiting and having bloody diarrhea. I took him back to VCA and while there he had an episode of diarrhea right in front of the registration desk that was all blood. But he was still not "critical" so they would not see him. I was able to have him seen later that day at a different emergency vet but it was too late and on Wednesday, 9/7, we had to have him put to sleep. I am sure that the vets at VDA are all very caring but this policy of seeing only "critical" cases is wrong. VCA might not have been able to save my dog's life when I went there on 9/2 but they might have been able to spare him his suffering before his actual death.

I am astonished by the low level of care taken here. I brought my dog to VCA after a long night of pain due to a worsening leg infection and because he was not eating, drinking, or using the restroom. They took him back , did absolutely no tests or wound clean up, and gave him back to me with a cone and said make an appointment with a vet this is not urgent and they have critical pets we need to prioritize. I took my dog home and over the course of the day his fever heightened and his leg turned into an open wound. I brought him back to VCA that night to see if they would at least flush the leg and wrap to to make sure the infection would not continue spreading. They told me I could wait several hours to see what they might do or go somewhere else. I went somewhere else because they told me others in the lobby had already been waiting to be seen for HOURS. When I got to road runner vet in algadonas they accepted my dog within minutes, brought him back for a full exam, and did the same for all other incoming pets without hesitation. They were friendly, caring, and helpful. My dog got admitted overnight for severe infection, potential poisonous bite, and a high high fever. If I would have left and tried to bring him back to VCA one more time who knows what would have happened as his condition worsened. Their negligence was a horror story for me and my sweet dog. Do not go here - drive the distance to road runner.

I wish I could give zero stars, but sadly I had to give one. I would NEVER EVER recommend anyone to bring their furry friend to this facility. I brought my cat into VCA around Christmas. She was mouth breathing which is extremely dangerous. The “doctor” brought me out around a $4000 bill and said she could potentially have cancer, and other issues. I know my baby, like most pet parents do. I requested medication as the first step and to keep her over night in an oxygen tank. Like myself and others that care enough about their furry friend.. we notice even the small things. My gut was telling me it was not anything they said. My cat is 10 years old but has never had any issues. She is seen by her primary and has always been a healthy, loving cat. The two vets who saw her told me multiple things and even brought up the option for euthanization . I was devastated and completely in distress because I didn’t think there was another option by what they were telling me. I then asked to see my cat. The tech took me to the back for me only to realize that she had 80% improved from medication. I was in disbelief. Why would a vet give me that option when my cat had completely improved in two days?! I then requested to keep her on medication and stay overnight to monitor her breathing. The next day I called about 4 times to see how she was. Finally, a new vet reached out and said she had completely improved and gave me alternatives to take her home. I will be filing a complaint with the two first vets. I am extremely upset still, and this is why I chose to post this. How could a vet almost make me make the worst decision of my life and not care?!? I trusted my gut and discharged my cat with medication. I now still have a healthy ten year old cat who just had a sever cold. I will be making a complaint to the board as well. Please do not EVER bring your loved furry friend to this place. You walk out with a nice bill and maybe not even your pet! Thank you Dr. Caroll. Simba sends you her love!!!!!

My experience with VCA Animal Hospital was horrible. It was Sunday morning and I called VCA and described my dog's issue and asked if I needed an appointment. I was told no, bring her in. When I arrived, I was asked if I had an appointment. After telling the intake person why I brought my dog in, she told me that they currently are not seeing dogs unless it is a life or death situation. But they could triage her (for 161.00), and then send me somewhere else (for another fee + treatment). They turned away my sick dog, gave me misinformation on the phone that wasted my time and time to get my dog treated, and dismissed me without regard for me or my dog. There were only two people in the waiting room whose animals were already being seen, but they turned mine away. I'm disgusted by the whole situation, from the phone call to being dismissed to get help elsewhere. If your precious pet needs emergency care, steer clear of this place. Go to Route 66 Hospital for the best and most compassionate care you will get for your pet, and for you.

Over the past 20+ years, we have taken all of our 5 cats here. They were the only ones to properly diagnose our tabby cat with IBD back when he was just over a year old. He lived to be 20 years old and passed away peacefully at home. They also helped two of our other babies cross the bridge peacefully. Most recently, last spring Dr. Russman showed extraordinary compassion in helping our Spazz (19-years-old) to cross over. In addition to saying goodbye to Spazz last spring, we met Dr. Hannah Leonard who spent a lot of time with our sweet 18-year-old boy Monster, who she diagnosed as having Hyperthyroidism. She then became my personal Superhero by helping us through the process of treating it, which culminated in him receiving the I-131 treatment which was performed by Dr. Nolan, who is also amazingly skilled and caring. Monster is now no longer Hyperthyroid which is fantastic! As was to be expected though, his CKD is being unmasked. Again, Dr. Leonard has been with us every step of the way, helping us to make good decisions and give Monster the best possible care so that he can live out the rest of his days as healthy and happy as possible. I would recommend everyone at VCA in a heartbeat, without hesitation. They are all awesome; but truly, Dr. Leonard is extraordinary. She has gone above and beyond the standard level of care on every single visit. She is kind, compassionate, and honest and upfront about everything. She is the Best of the Best, with Honors.

I was so nervous about my little 7 lb 1 year old, yorkiepoo Bella Bean getting spayed. But everyone was so supportive and caring! Ivy in the Pharmacy helped prep Bella’s meds and explained everything in-person. Dr. Carrier was an amazing surgeon and my pups primary Dr. Russman delivered her to me post-op. The front office was delightful. She’s recovering so well. I’m so grateful for VCA! Thank you!

Edit: they did end up finding the paw prints. Changed to 5 stars. Really great service here thank you. My dog was attacked in our backyard by the neighbor's dog. He received excellent medical care, and I felt like the staff really cared for the animals. My dog was mortally wounded and we euthanized him. The process was very compassionate. I'm giving 3 stars because they did not take paw prints like they said they would, and neither did their contracted cremation service even though that is one of the things you receive with a private cremation. My dog died heroically, saving my 4 year old son from a vicious dog in our own backyard and I can never get those paw prints back.

I cannot put into words what these people have done for my family. We adopted a young pup and found out she had a very rare and agressive cancer. She was extremely sick when it was discovered and we were referred. From the moment they squeezed her in for an appointment within 24 hours of her diagnosis, to holding us through letting her go, we were all loved and supported. The front desk staff knew her by name. They greeted and loved her every time she came in. Both oncologists did such amazing work. Their support staff and techs told us how special she was to them and came to say their goodbyes. The four months they cared for her were some of the best of her life, and because of the VCA, she was able to spend her final days on the beach rather than in the pound. Because of this, we immediately took our next pup to the primary care clinic where we received the same level of care. And when our new puppy had an emergency, their ER department was there for our family too. I will be a client for as long as I'm able because I know that they have my dog's best interest at heart.

Yesterday we took our critically ill dog to the VCA facility on Montgomery NE in Albuquerque. We were hesitant initially because some of the reviews we saw were not positive; however, our vet simply did not have the imaging available to give us a diagnosis for our dog and was suggesting euthanizing her. We were not ready to do that until we knew her prognosis. From the moment I called to set up a time for us to arrive with her (we live two hours away), we were treated with such care. We found the staff, doctors and technicians to be thorough and professional. In the end, we made the painful decision to have our dog euthanized. Again, everyone was kind and supportive. I notice that some people have issues with the billing. At every point we were kept informed about what to expect and were given the option to accept or reject treatment, so we never felt we were overcharged. We will definitely use this facility in the future, should we need emergency vet care.`

My dog of 12 years has been experiencing seizures and quick spells where she will shake and lose her balance and fall down. I called and was told to bring her right over which I did, once I arrived filled and some quick paperwork and they took her to the back, and was brought right back to me and was told “ the doctor doesn’t think it’s seizures and said she was fine enough to wait”. I’m not a vet doctor but when my dog locks up and falls to the ground and is kicking erratically, and breathing extremely hard gasping for air and foaming from the mouth I’m pretty sure it’s a seizure! While in the waiting room and watching people come and go and with my dog having a couple of her quick spells where she lost here balance and I caught her a few different times I was brought a blanket for her to lay on which very thoughtful but she didn’t use it and was panting the entire time and I could tell was getting restless and thirsty. After 3 hours of waiting when I thought what I explained was an emergency must have not been enough for them to give her any attention, so I guess if your pet isn’t doing it right in front of them don’t expect to get seen for a while.

First let me say thank you to Dr. brown for showing a great deal of compassion and being forthright with me. That being said, I have a big problem with VCA overall. My dog ate a whole container of probiotics while I was at work. When I got home, I called VCA located on Coors/I-40 for advice. They told me to call ASPCA poison control, why a vets office could not have helped me with this is perplexing. Of course, I was put on hold, and had to hear a message about staff shortages. When I did get someone on the line, they recommended giving hydrogen peroxide to make my dog vomit, which VCA later said was a bad idea. My dog would not take it anyway! So, after wasting all this time, I rushed my dog to the hospital. $1000 of tests and an hour and a half later revealed he had something referred to as bloat/twisted stomach and would need emergency surgery ($7000-$10000). Unfortunately, he passed away before we could get to that, but at his age, we were discussing putting him down anyway. I guess my point is that a lot of needless time was wasted. I would think a good vet, or vet tech could listen the facts about what he ate, and by looking at his bloated body make a reasonable guess as to the issue. I loved my dog more than anything but seems like were treating pets like people no days! And as for cost, vets don't even need expensive liability insurance. I'm beginning to think these large vet corporations are just in bed with the pet insurance companies that seem to have exploded over the years.

I can't speak on behalf of the entire facility but what I can say is Dr. Kitchell with the referral/oncology side is beyond amazing. Our little Elvis was diagnosed with grade 3 mast cell tumor in December 2021 and had it removed by his primary vet and was referred to VCA for his care. When Elvis first was seen we were told he wouldn't live more than 3 months with it being grade 3. We were devastated as we had adopted Elvis in March 2021 as he was already an old little man. We fought hard for this little guy and did everything we possibly could to keep him with us as long as he would allow, he got severely sick and his cancer had spread and his lymph nodes were huge so we had to go in on a Saturday as an emergency and that's when we met Dr. Kitchell. She had so much knowledge and fought for him as well and was able to get him better and she was able to give us extra time with him. He lost the battle in January 2023 but Dr. Kitchell is such a wonderful caring person and we were blessed to have found her to give us that extra time with our sweet boy. Everyone we came across from Dr. Kitchell to her techs to the front desk were amazing people who truly cared.

For the emergency room, unless your pet is at death's door. You'll be waiting for hours and you MIGHT be seen by the doctor. We kept seeing people leave during our wait. The nurses/technician did see our pet for evaluation. So I'll at least give them 2 stars for that. You'll be in queue for a long time and keep getting bumped by other emergencies. I don't blame the nurses/technicians/doctors. Management is clearly to blame for this ridiculous situation. It's pretty obvious they're running a lean crew. Edit: (8/29/23) I wanted to add we were seen at about 9pm, an hour before they closed, we waited about 5 hours. The techs/nurses/1 doctor, were very kind to us. Dr. Zinsser was very helpful and kind when she presented us our options. The kindness shown to us by the staff earned another star. BUT I still stand by my opinion on the management side. VCA management is horrible! I can't believe people would leave the hospital because they weren't going to be seen. I was extremely lucky to be seen by the doctor. VCA should hire another doctor at minimum to help take care of emergency patients. For people with sick pets, if you're coming here make sure you arrive at minimum 6 hours before they close. This way you'll at least have a chance of your pet being seen. On the safe side, I would try to show up as soon as they open or 8 hours before they close. I had to come here because my normal vet wasn't capable of handling the situation and they recommended us VCA.

I'm really surprised to see so many negative views of this facility. I have had nothing but good experiences with this clinic, especially during traumatic times. My first experience with VCA occurred when I accidentally cut my kitten's skin while attempting to de-mat him. I presented to the ER and he was seen within a couple hours because his case was not as urgent as some of the others that were present at the time. I thought it was a very reasonable wait for an emergency clinic. I have brought one of my cats here three times for radioactive iodine treatment and Dr. Dawn Nolan has been wonderful to us. Finally, my mom brought one of our dogs here to be euthanized during an emergency situation and the staff and vets took fantastic care of my mom and her beloved pet. My mom was also really impressed with the quality of the room in which her dog was put to sleep - - she said it was not a very "clinical" room; it had been organized as such so that it was comfortable and comforting (a couch, nice lamp, etc.). I have also had PCP appointments at this clinic and have found the vets to be knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I think VCA does a wonderful job with some very difficult situations as well as primary care.

Dealt with our puppy emergency expertly and professionally. Found the cause quickly. Our vet did her best to discount the unneeded tests which was completely a surprise. We were fine paying but she felt the diagnosis could have been quicker and treatment more prompt. Humble and excellent care. More clinics should live up to this level!

Update- I recently brought my pup In to see the orthopedic specialist for a foot injury. The doc was able to quickly determine the injury that a different doc had misdiagnosed. She offered options and estimates for each option. The injury sucks but I feel more confident knowing what the injury is and how to approach it. Update- I've been turned away from the ER clinic a few times because my doc was not dying. It's frustrating but it was true. My dog was able to wait until Monday to see a primary doc. I brought my pup in for an emergency eye problem on a Friday night and I was seen within 30 Mins for triage and a bit later for the doctor. We were given eye drops for the night but had to return in the morning to see the ophthalmologist. Both doctors I saw seemed knowledgeable and all the staff was friendly, even when they were busy. My pup is on the mend and my pet insurance is helping to cover the vet costs

A few nights ago our baby Boss was hurt. My partner rushed him in to get checked out. When we went to pick him up he looked so good! The Vets and Vet Techs were so amazing and just did remarkable. Boss is doing so good with his injuries, and its all thanks to these amazing people. I really want to mention the Gentleman that brought him out to us. I don't remember his name but he had long hair. He was so great with Boss. Helping us load him in the car, and his demeanor was very professional and caring. Thank you all so much!

The staff in the primary care section were so friendly and easy going during my dogs emergency. Marie, Mariana, maria and I'm sorry a male vet tech I don't remember his name were great. Veterinarian Hannah, was amazing. Dr. McLean and Dr. Peterson did such a great Job for my dog Scout, they warmed my heart by saying they loved her too. The only staff member I thought was really flat, didn't give off friendly vibes was Cheyenne who was a front desk person. But I would come again if my dog had an eye emergency.

I have been using VCA since living in AZ and have nothing but glowing reviews. I moved here in 2015 and at the time was closer to the Montgomery clinic. Again the staff here did an amazing job of seeing my pet dog. Flash forward to relatively recently that the quality just seemed to have dipped dramatically. I had a vet practically blame me for my dog's ailment and then act in disbelief when I said that you could not touch my dog without her yelping in pain, thinking she must be bruised. I got told curtly that it's vertigo and that I either must be lying about the initial discussion or that I have no clue what's going on. And now you guys decide to end your 24/7 clinic, I mean if something happens on the weekend or overnight I guess we're out of luck. Sadly that happened last evening when I had to take my dog in only to find out that you're not open 24/7 and there's only a few ER vets open, one of which is in Algodones and they were expecting pets from other clinics because VCA isn't open late anymore, one clinic is overloaded, and the other one lost power. So much for quality service in the city. Really disappointed.

My sister's baby had glaucoma and had to have her eye removed. Dr. McLean was excellent and did a fantastic job. The vet tech Alicia was an absolute angel who was beyond kind and loving. Thank you to all the staff we interacted with. You are an amazing group of people. Snowy is doing great!

Very caring and compassionate staff. I brought my pup in after a dog fight. Knowing they were very busy, the tech actually referred me to another clinic so that my dog could be seen more quickly. She called ahead to get the other clinic updated and prepared. I really appreciate the service, even though they didn’t complete the care.

At 3:30 this morning our little pumpkin of love started to seize. We were at VCA in 7 minutes. We were met by reception AND the veterinarian. Our 15 year old pumkin noodle of love [not paperwork or ability to pay] was taken care of first. They recognized cardiac arrest and attempted life saving procedures. Our pumpkin of love crossed the rainbow bridge. We want to express our gratitude at the immediate and quality care our pumpkin, as well as us, received. We opted for the personal cremation. The cost of the ENTIRE visit was only the cost of the cremation, urn and paw print in a keepsake. We've had dogs since kids and understand the cost of their medical care. From core vaccinations to thousands of dollars in cancer treatments, the amounts are high. We ALL love our pumpkins and do what it takes, no matter the cost. The compassion and care from VCA, instead of $$$ first ... OUTSTANDING!

My partner Kali and I took our cat Layla to be seen by Dr. Russman and tech Rebecca today. Our cat had a stroke in September and we’ve had nothing but really supportive and lovely care from VCA, both on the emergency side and in the general clinic. Today, both Dr. Russman and Rebecca went out of their way to discuss a treatment plan with options, offered samples to try and gently cared for our very anxious cat. Dr. Russman so clearly shared our joy that Layla is doing so well, and their compassion was felt and very appreciated. Thank you all!

I almost never leave negative reviews, but sometimes a business is totally inconsiderate of you and your time in a repeatable way so it seems worth sharing so others know what to expect. I had an appointment for my dog to see a specialist at 1:00 p.m. today. In order to go to that appointment I had to take off work, drive across town to my house to get my dog, and drive back across town to their location on Montgomery. I did all of that and arrived at the office at about 12:50. BUT, I had screwed up and pulled into the wrong place, another vet office just down Montgomery- less than 10 minutes away. I went in there and it took a few minutes to figure out that I was at the wrong vet office. Totally my bad. Once I figured that out it was still a few minutes before 1:00 so I called VCA and explained that I was close by and asked for the address and started driving over- I was literally on Montgomery. I explained that I would arrive in less than ten minutes. This was at 12:59. So...their employee says "I am going to need to place you on a brief hold." That's fine, and I am heading over there. So she leaves me on hold for several minutes and when she comes back it's 1:03 and my GPS says I will be there in 5 minutes. She says "I talked to the team and we will need to re-schedule." I like honestly couldn't believe it. I was going to be less than 10 minutes late. I said that I would be there in less than five minutes and she replied "Yes, exacty." I thought that was pretty rude. I haven't mentioned that I was on my way to my $260 (!) "consultation." I don't know exactly how short the consultation was going to be (maybe it was only like 20 minutes), but I think you can get an idea from this story. I am sure I can find somebody else to give my dog a $260 consultation. I have several pets and I can tell you: there are other places in town for specialty pet services.

I’ve brought my dog three times so far to see Dr. Peterson with ophthalmology. So far her and her team are always nice and they treat my Sky very well.

  • 5/5 Anna F. 5 months ago on Google
Dr. Peterson went above and beyond to treat my dog for his ruptured eye. If I had received a fraction of her bedside manor and care from any of my human doctors I would consider myself blessed. The level of attention, patience, and empathy that my pup and I received were unprecedented and I couldn’t imagine being in better hands during a medical emergency with my pets.
