Talk about potential for a great experience gone wrong! Best overall word would be “musty”. So much potential for such a great venue but it was overall from beginning to end, lacking. There is definitely a stench apart from the aroma that was attempted to be frankincense and myrrh. The decor had all the pieces it just lacked cleanliness and care. Service was definitely sub par and staff made no attempt to add to the ambiance, pretty much a take it or leave it attitude. I ordered “The BB Gun” and it was definitely beautiful in presentation due to the dark lighting until we found out the was an olive added to the garnish of my drink….. it was a sweet, fruity drink….just why???? The drink literally tastes like the bar, it was as if they used an old rotten strawberry in my drink and the pineapple juice had no freshness to it. I’m actually super disappointed that this could be such an amazing experience but was so awful.

Came on a Monday night, was told that there was a 20 minute wait to space things for the bartenders out, Waited with 2 other groups, let us all in at once, wasn’t greeted by anyone when explained by the door that the bartenders would take orders. Definitely seemed like they were overwhelmed/trying to make it seem like they’re exclusive. Was pretty disappointed after finally seeing the cocktail list. Thought about walking up to the bar and ordering but the bartenders weren’t really interacting with people. More of an awkward vibe than a cool speakeasy. Left after not being seen for 10 mins. Definitely disappointed because I had this place recommended by a few people.

This place freaking rocks. The cocktails are inspirational, unique and expertly made. We had Josh as our bartender and sat at the bar - he is super knowledgeable and does a phenomenal job. He’s also a great conversationalist. Atmosphere is exclusive but homey. Could not recommend more highly.

Neat spot! Wasn’t the hardest to find. Just go into the liquor store. The atmosphere was nice and the drink selection was great. The bartender was incredibly welcoming and helpful. Would make for a good romantic night out! The place isn’t that big and can feel a little tight but it works

My partner and I were excited to try Founders, but unfortunately we were not met with a positive experience. My partner has a fair complexion, but is Indigenous. When we met with the cashier at El Rey Liquors and shared the password, he believed she was too intoxicated and denied access after meeting him at the entrance of Founder's. She was our designated driver and was completely sober. We explained this to him and he was admit that she looked as if she "had a few too many". We went as far as offering to smell her breath for alcohol, but he refused and demanded that we left. I am never the first to believe something is racially charged, but after offering every explanation to him and him being adamant she was intoxicated due to her appearance I was left no other option than assume it had to do with a drunken-Native stereotype that still exists. We left with her crying in the car because of the interaction. Overall, this was completely disappointing and deeply upsetting.

Really nice speakeasy. Hidden underneath a liquor store, you'll need to have the password emailed to you. Once you give the store employee the password and ID, he'll lead you to the door downstairs. It's fairly small, but themed nicely. They only had a single bartender when I was there so it'll be difficult to get service if it gets busy.

Love the open mic here! A very positive and welcoming space for those who don't become hostile. I go every Monday and have never had an issue minus last week

Open mic is awesome. All comedians were so good, minus that random guy(Andrew? Austin? Not very good). Love the cocktails and the people. GOING EVERY MONDAY! I love the atmosphere!!

Nothing less than 5 stars for the two maverick bartenders here. What an amazingly fun place in an otherwise low-key city. We found them on the first day we were in ABQ and returned two days in a row. They do keep the spirit of speakeasy and are kind of hidden inside another store and there is a secret passageway to get to the bar and all of this makes the experience so much unique. Once downstairs I did find the place a little stuffy as it's in a basement with no windows and space wise they are really scarce. Couple seats on the bar a few seating scattered across the floor and that's about it. Drinks are bomb though, everything we ordered turned out to be fantastic and these guys are extremely knowledgeable about their liquors . The next day we went in and asked for the same drinks and surprisingly they tasted even better. After a while ,the bartender knew what I liked and he just made stuff based on my preferences and by the time we left I don't even remember how many of those marvelous cocktails I had . The hubby tried a lot of their mezcal, and they even let him taste from one of their most expensive bottles. The friendly service and the amazing cocktails totally make this place a 5 star experience and if I am ever in Abq again, I am 100% coming back .

Fun to find. They use top shelf liquor in their house drinks. Had their old fashioned made with high west bourbon. Bartender was great and gave us lots of ideas of where else to try while on our trip.

I love Founders; it's such a cozy place with delicious drinks and perfect for dates and hanging out with friends. Most of the bartenders are so friendly and nice, but there was one who was so angry and rude, not sure if he's still there. Sometimes there can be a long wait, but just grab a beer around the corner and you'll be close enough to come back in time. My favorite bar downtown so far

Founders Speakeasy is a hidden gem that captures the essence of a bygone era, offering a truly unique and memorable experience. From the moment you step through the concealed entrance, you're transported back to the prohibition era. The dimly lit, intimate ambiance sets the perfect mood for a night out. The décor, with its vintage furnishings and jazz-age aesthetics, is both charming and nostalgic. What truly sets Founders Speakeasy apart is its impressive cocktail menu. The mixologists here are masters of their craft, concocting creative and expertly balanced drinks that are a delight for the senses. Whether you prefer classics like Old Fashioneds or are open to trying their innovative house specials, you won't be disappointed. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, happy to guide you through the menu and even create custom cocktails tailored to your preferences. The only caveat is that it can get quite busy, so making a reservation is a smart move to ensure you get a seat. However, the lively atmosphere and the occasional live jazz performances add to the allure of Founders Speakeasy. This Speakeasy is more than just a bar; it's an experience that transports you to a different time and place. If you're looking for a night of exceptional cocktails and a touch of nostalgia, this hidden gem is a must-visit.

Easily the best bar in Albuquerque. You can order from their creative cocktail menu or enjoy top shelf spirits that you probably won't find at most places. I prefer to let their truly professional bartenders take the reigns since they create masterpieces on the fly. Remember to access this speakeasy through the El Rey liquor store and find the weekly password on their Instagram. Enjoy.

Attentive staff and great atmosphere! So fun to participate and enjoy a nice drink., but as I was the driver, they made a wonderful espresso blend coffee for me.

My boyfriend and I are visiting NM for my birthday. He brought me here last night and when we walked into the liquor store I was thinking "What the heck are we doing?¿" I was about to be super annoyed until the guy behind the counter asked him for the password and led us to this walk-in, which was, in fact, not a giant fridge but the gateway to this small, yet intimately chic bar. Sergio was the only bartender but he was efficient, checked on everyone adequately, and didn't hover. Sergio was also really instrumental in helping us choose our drinks. I love it when bartenders are able to engage and actually have a conversation about the artistry in the cocktails, and not just work for that tip. There's a difference. I bartended for 7 years so I understand being busy or even jaded, but there are lots of bartenders that can't even be bothered to make a suggestion. Our favorite drink that Sergio recommended was the "There's No Moon..." It was complex, yet all the flavors complemented each other perfectly. Plus, I'm a sucker for anything that's smoked. The main ingredient is their house-infused apricot, and vanilla ice cream mezcal. I highly recommend this spot for a drink if you're able to get in. I'm surprised there was no wait when we went, but I guess it was early for the normal bar crowd at 9pm.

Awesome, top-notch drinks🍸 Mixologists are some of the best in town. No food, but you can bring your own. Love the 'speakeasy' vibe, great lighting and atmosphere. Go earlier in the night - better chance of getting in right away. Make sure you have the password ready. Enjoy 🍸

The whole experience was a blast! Well done! The bartender was excellent. Easy parking. Loved the fact that we needed a password to get in!

Fine cocktail speakeasy hidden behind the fridge in the El Rey liquors bodega. Get the password online. Loved my banana bread drink!

Popped into here after a long day at a conference near by...The guys upstairs were super friendly and let us know to come back in a few minutes as they were full downstairs. We took a walk and came back in 15 and the timing was perfect. The drinks were great, really cool atmosphere. I took off a star because the bartender had attitude and decided to take it out on our group of 5 but oh well, I'd be cranky too if I worked in a basement. Overall, I'd recommend :)

This place is great! I mean, you gotta love a spot that a Code Word gets you led into a "freezer" down a stairway to another time. It loses one star from me only because the tight setting is hard to overlook. The Decor is amazing. The lighting, exactly what it should be for a Speakeasy and the drinks! Great, courteous staff each time I've been there. They have a wide variety of things in their drink selection. You are sure to find something that will suit your taste. Although it is a small venue, they do have a variety of entertainment as well. If you don't have a password and you get stuck on the list. Don't worry, they'll text when you're spot is coming. All in all, it's definitely worth a visit
