Visited in Early November - no crowds - note you can’t go inside the fort as it is an active government building. Still the surrounding beaches and restaurants make for a serene few hours. There are also quite a few surfers taking to the Atlantic waves

(Translated by Google) The Fort of São Julião da Barra is the largest maritime fortification in Portugal, built in the Vauban style. It was once the residence of a Defense Minister (Paulo Portas). It is a place where several types of instiyucional events take place. The terraces, the vaulted casemates and the cistern are remarkable. It is possible to visit, by prior appointment. One of the world's most amazing places! Pity you cannot visit! Belongs to the Ministry of Defense, and visits are only allowed with a very special permission! I was very fortunate to go often, when a 1st Cousin worked for the Ministry, and there was a fantastic oceanic swimming pool there, in the 1960's. As children we used to explore the dungeons and 'secret' passages, so full of History! Last time, I was filming an historical tv program in the fabulous water reservoir, only comparable, and similar to the one of Mazagao (El Jadida) in Marroco... This was back in 1987, no idea how all is now...

Such an amazing spot leaning over the sea in Carcavelos beach. I wish they’d open that wonderful terrace to the public and add some bars or food truck so you can have a mojito and appreciate the sunset during the summer🌅

Fascinating, a little overcrowded and car parking is a challenge. Better take the Train/Tram or Bus.

It is one of the most historic and impressive fortresses in Portugal. Located in the scenic town of Oeiras, this fortress is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the country's rich history and culture. Built in the 16th century, Forte de São Julião da Barra served as a crucial defense point against enemy invasions for centuries. The fortification has undergone many changes over the years and has been restored to its original grandeur, making it a unique and captivating attraction. As you walk through the fortress, you'll be transported back in time, surrounded by ancient walls and towers that have stood the test of time. The breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Tejo Estuary add to the overall charm of the place and make it a favorite spot for photographers. If you're looking to relax and unwind, the fortress also boasts beautiful gardens that are perfect for picnics or a leisurely stroll. The peaceful atmosphere and stunning views make it an ideal spot to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Forte de São Julião da Barra is an essential destination for anyone visiting Portugal. Its rich history, stunning views, and peaceful atmosphere make it a unique and unforgettable experience.

Nice place. Please don’t trash it and don’t pee all over it. If you promise I will tell you that it is possible to go around the forecast from the right side. You will be able to go almost to the front line. Peaceful place with rocks. Please be quiet and don’t disturb fisherman or people who escaped the crowded beach

I've had the privilege of visiting Forte de São Julião da Barra multiple times to perform at private events with various musical projects. This historical venue holds a special place in my heart as my favorite location for prestigious events. Its grandeur, historical significance, and stunning surroundings make it an exceptional choice for hosting notable gatherings. The fort's unique blend of architectural beauty and scenic views of the sea create an unforgettable atmosphere for any occasion. Whether it's a concert, a gala, or a special celebration, Forte de São Julião da Barra provides an unparalleled backdrop that enhances the overall experience. My experiences at this venue have always been memorable, and I can't help but appreciate the grandeur and ambiance that it offers. It's undoubtedly a remarkable place for events of distinction.

👍👍 Update: Summer has come - a paid zone with sun beds and umbrellas has appeared. Well, there were more people.... If you get by train, then this is the nearest beach worthy of Lisbon. It takes 5 minutes to walk from the station. There is a cafe and a McDonald's nearby.
