Djamaa el Djazaïr (Arabic: جامع الجزائر), also known as the Great Mosque of Algiers (French: Grande mosquée d'Alger), is a mosque in Algiers, Algeria. It houses the world's tallest minaret and is the third-largest mosque in the world after the Great Mosque of Mecca and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi of Medina in Saudi Arabia The construction of the mosque began in August 2012 after the Algerian government's contract, for 1 billion euros, was won by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation. The design was done by German architects KSP Juergen Engel Architekten and engineers Krebs und Kiefer International and was completed by April 2019. The mosque faced construction delays owing to budgetary concerns due to the falling prices of oil. Around 2,300 workers from China, Algeria and other African countries were deployed to work on the project. The construction of the mosque was seen by many to serve as a symbol of the reign of long-serving president Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The mosque sits on a site covering 400,000 m2 (4,300,000 sq ft) and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The prayer hall has a capacity of 37,000 worshippers, while the structure including the compound can house up to 120,000 worshippers and has parking space for 7,000 cars. The complex also houses a Quran(قرآن) school, a park, a library, staff housing area, a fire station, a museum of Islamic art, and a research centre on the history of Algeria. The mosque also has a 265 m (869 ft) tall minaret, which makes it the tallest building in Africa. It also houses an observation deck atop the minaret, which has 37 floors. The mosque is designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 and the structure has been specially processed to resist corrosion. The main prayer hall has 618 octagonal columns serving as support pillars and 6 km (3.7 mi) of calligraphic writing engraved with a laser system. The dome of the prayer hall has a diameter of 50 m (160 ft) and rises to a height of 70 m (230 ft).

This is quite an impressive mosque and can be seen from the Atlas mountains, the tower standing high above the city. Its an impressive construction and huge, with the mosque prayer hall making up only part of the campus. As visitors we were able to go in to the inner square, but unlike in Casablanca, we were not allowed in to the prayer hall. You can only visit the mosque during prayer time, thus it makes sense you cannot enter the hall. I would have liked to walk around more of the campus, but we were limited as where we were allowed to go. I would recommend a visit with a guide.

Tried to visit last week. The guards wouldn't let us in since we were not carrying prayer mats although we are tourists and were not there to pray. Not very amusing after we had driven through nearly an hour of Algiers traffic to get there.

As a foreign visitor, I had an enjoyable experience seeing this beautiful mosque. I was nervous at first because I read a few reviews saying that the mosque was not friendly or accommodating to tourists, particularly for women’s dress, but I did not find this to be the case. People can only visit during prayer time, which you can look up easily online, the entrance opens about 15 minutes before. Wear appropriate dress - if you are a lady and you don’t have the appropriate clothes (for example: a long skirt, a loose cardigan, and a headscarf securely covering your hair), you can very easily find these items in any shopping center. This is a reasonable sign of respect that most mosques (as well as other religious places) request of visitors. The structure is massive, very clean, and beautiful, and holds several notable records (world’s tallest mosque, world’s third largest mosque, tallest building in Africa). I have visited a lot of mosques in different countries and this one was impressive. Signs are written in Arabic, French, and English, and the staff were all friendly, helpful, and professional. Overall it was an enjoyable experience, just be mindful and respectful of the local customs and it is a perfectly welcoming place for tourists.

We had a little incident with the staff since u can't get in unless ur wearing full hijab even for 15 yo girls, but one of the workers there wasn't even wearing one which was weird. Also it feels like a tourist attraction pretty place, not a masjid. And finally it's sad so see it empty like that

Amazing ! Biggest mosque 🕌 in Algeria, third biggest in the world. A large prayer hall, a library, a museum, several conference rooms, several shops to promote Algerian culture and traditions.

After a very long trip and drive, I wasn't allowed access, for I was not wearing a scarf. Silly me to expect much from my lovely Algeria. This mosque attracts lots of tourists, would it be much to dedicate a room where women could be offered scarves to visit the inside? It felt really humiliating to be honest. My praying scarf was squeezed inside lots of baggage so I couldn't really easily get it, so I just forsook the whole idea of entering the mosque. Still disappointed to this day about it.

Huge mosque, considered as the biggest in Africa, and third biggest in the world after Mekka and Grand mosque in Abu Dhabi. While considered as the tallest masjid in the world ( 265m ) until the time I wrote this review. Open all days, all prayers except Friday prayers. The masjid is planned to have library, some shops and potentially a hotel as well. Located in strategic place, where all ships coming to Algeria sees this masjid as the 1st thing upon arriving distantly from Algiers.

Designed by reputed German architects and constructed by the well-known Chinese construction company (CSCEC), the Great Mosque of Algiers is the third largest mosque in the world with a total area of 400.000 m2. It could house up to 120.000 worshipers and has got a 7000-car parking lot. This stunning mammouth mosque is also deemed the tallest building in Africa as its exquisite minaret is about 870 ft high with a 37-floor observation deck atop. It took them nearly a decade to finish construction with a cost of 900 millions Euros.

Fantastic faith centre, educational and cultural edifices, well thought out and well built, magnificent architectural and engineering work. The minaret is said to be above 250mtrs and claimed to be the tallest in the world not less than 40 flours with the elevator, while the mosque is the 3rd biggest.

The architecture of the grand mosque is splendid! Some areas are still not open due to constructions. The staff are very welcoming and were nice with us, although I wish the prayer rooms were open for longer periods. We prayed salat duhr then we were quickly rushed to leave the praying space in the women section.

we don't need mosques in Algeria, it costs too much money to build, instead we need hospitals, good universities and much mote important things, it's a pity.

Assalam Walikoum, I just prayed Duhr at this mosque. A beautiful and huge place. It is a very nice place for praying and the facilities are adequate. However, as many things in Algeria the project as a whole was not thought through. How can you build a such big mosque and don’t plan for the mean of transportation. It is really a shame. I just pray and hope that in the long run this will be fixed.

Great place. Surprised by the fact there is no traffic. Next to the beach after prayer and there is a vast area to chill in definitely a good place to go. There are places for children just outside of the mosque. Good scenery and good environment for the masjid definitely a 5 star
