Old structure, not maintained properly, but worth going for delicious food. It is one of the oldest coffee outlets in India.

Visited this Old Cafe in Prayagraj, a place known for its history as a famous and established coffee house since 1975. The cafe's charm lies in its vintage feel and the sense of tradition it carries. However, the taste of their Indian filter coffee was average and didn't quite match up to the hype. While the cafe's legacy is certainly noteworthy, I felt that its reputation might have exceeded the actual experience. If you're a fan of history and nostalgia, it's worth a visit, but do keep in mind that the coffee might not live up to the lofty expectations.

A must visit place if you are ever in Prayagraj/Allahabad. The Indian Coffee House is a restaurant chain in India, run by a series of worker co-operative societies. It has strong presence across India with nearly 400 coffee houses. It has been a hub for Communist and Socialist movements for generations, and played an important role hosting the revolutionaries during the struggle for freedom. Thus it has played a very important role in the politics of India.

THE INDIAN COFFEE HOUSE , ALLAHABAD was established in 1957 and since then not much has changed about the place other than the peeled off plasters (with no attempts to repair them) and may be the menu board with new rates. The high ceilings with long handled fans suspended from them , the large hall and the white crisp uniform of the waiters with the belt and turban, all add to the charm of the Indian Coffee House in most cities. It has always been a place for the intellectuals of the city to discuss politics, sports, films and the like while sipping a cup of coffee or munching on their cheese toast and cutlets and poached eggs. Some of the food items may disappoint you but overall the menu which has also not seen much change over the years has a different appeal among the regulars here. The Egg Dosa, the Mutton Keema Dosa, the Paneer Pakoda and this MUTTON CUTLET are a few things which are exclusively served here. I hope the millennial kids understand and appreciate the old world charm of these coffee houses which seem to be dying out with time.

Love this place. The 'costliest' dosa here is mere 100 bucks. Do try masala dosa. Coffee is great, obviously. The building looks old and wornout but it has been maintained like this. For those who don't know about the place, please google about its history. You will be left amazed.

Indian coffee house cafe is used like a landmark here in allahabad/prayagraj which makes it popular and prominent. I had their special coffee and a grilled veg sandwich. Maybe you can try something else like scrambled eggs or other toasts to experience better. Although the food was okay, this place gives you the vibes of those places where friends can hangout and chill for a long time. The staff was really well behaved and dressed up nicely. I am going to visit it again whenever in Prayagraj.

It's very old restaurant, i have visited since 1994. No change, it's a nostalgic feeling. The menu is good, food quality is very good. I had mutton dosa, it's not like in south India, but at this place it's very good. Best thing is cost it's moderate. Coffee was also not comparable with south India, but at this place it's okay, but price seems little bit more

Its a very old cafe and you will get different types of coffee and snacks there. Snacks include south indian dishes, sandwiches, toasts ,etc. The service is pretty fast and the place is very very pocket friendly. Its a good subtle place for having light chit chat with your friends.

One of the oldest hangout places especially for working professionals such as lawyers, doctors etc for their daily coffee and snacks. They give fresh indian filter coffee and not regular Cappuccino or Latte. There is no Indian chai as well. The preparations are fresh and fairly good. Given todays covid times, the hygiene might not be the best but Ive eaten here multiple times and never fallen sick. Their south Indian dishes are good and you cannot go wrong with regular snacks like Vegetable cutlet and omelette. This has 2 buildings where you can sit, one is at the back of the alley which is the main and then theres one in the right corner at beginning of the alley deemed as “family” room. Both are not air conditioned so be prepared. However, this is a benefit in covid times as there is plenty of fresh air and ventilation. All in all a must visit at least once. They don’t accept payments via UPI apps like BHiM, PayTM etc but they do accept card payments or cash.

Went to Indian Coffee House, Prayagraj with old memories & high hopes. Food is delicious. Hygiene is good. Staff is very polite as usual. But the charm is missing. Furniture needs upgrading. Somehow, barring a few places, we cd not retain its glory. In old times famous Hindi Novelist like Ranu & others used to assemble there. It is our fault not to patronise these joints. Any how good place for south Indian stuff especially coffee.

When you feel like visiting somewhere back in time but authentic and off the charts, this is the place. The coffee was good, the dosa too, but the only thing that didn't go with the place was the cleanliness. Still Worth visiting.

Went here as it's one of the legendary places in Allahabad. Tried their Butter Masala Dosa and totally loved it. Cutlets were good as well. Coffee was average though! Also the food is a bit overpriced.

I had ordered butter masala dosa, which I had in the Indian coffee house, Connaught place branch and since then I have become its fan. Butter masala dosa at the Prayagraj branch cost me around 170 rupees which was more expensive than Connaught place. Also, they charged an extra refill of sambhar or coconut chutney. Beside dosa, I didn't like the sambhar as it was missing its key ingredients and was watery. Butter masala dosa's taste was similar to that I had in Connaught place, but the sambhar and coconut chutney wasn't up to the mark. Also I had told the manager, that Indian Coffee House doesn't charge extra for refills in Connaught place, so he didn't charge for the coconut chutney. I appreciated this noble gesture. Also IHC has a heritage of serving authentic Indian food through generations at minimal cost. It's run by a cooperative society. The way of serving, the building, the fan, the uniform of the waiter hasn't changed. Elderly people often love to visit this place, as you'll notice here, maybe that reminds them of their good old days and the memories that they shared here. Do visit for butter masala dosa.

Rustic! That's one word to describe it. Through the hustle of the city, the changes around, this place has managed to keep it's timeless rustic charm intact. The uniforms of the wait-staff, the menu, the cutlery, everything just throws you back in the 80s and the 90s, and it's just beautiful. The quality of food has deteriorated over the time, and the prices have gone significantly up, but it's still good enough and very very affordable. Everyone should give this place a visit.

Very old building, after entering you might feel like 1980 's. Not that much facilities available. Food is tasty and nicely prepared. Butter dosas are real stars. Variety of food can be increased. The hotel closes 9 pm and many dishes will not be available by that time. Reaching little early so that one can taste all the dishes. Renovation can be done to increase sales.

We went for a light lunch, as they only serve Tiffins it was enough for us. we ordered Butter Dosa, Masala Dosa, Idli, wada with sambar and chutney. It was not easy to find restaurants which serve South Indian food. The taste was good. The cold and hot coffee is exceptionally very tasty. I highly recommend it for treating your taste buds for tasty South Indian Tiffins and very tasty hot and cold coffee.

It was indeed a delight to see people actually having discussions there. The place was noisy but it was GOOD noise, one of the things which is keeping the legacy of ICH intact. This place holds a special importance in Indian politics as it (along with other ICHs) has been a witness to discussions of renowned poets, politicians, intellectuals, and freedom fighters. **Food** I ordered dosa but the stuffing not at all felt like it was meant for dosa because it had burnt onions. Veg cutlet was somewhat good, extremely soft inside, just melts in the mouth. Coffee was keeping the standards intact TBH I liked Connaught place ICH more. **Service** was pretty fast and staff was courteous. **Ambiance** In contrast to the reviews posted before, the situation is under control now, as the walls are freshly painted and they have a separate corner for hand wash. The place nonetheless gives one COLONIAL VIBES. High ceiling fans, staff in typicall high cap vintage architecture. A must go place if one wants to get a taste of history along with food. P.S:- I haven't tasted their non veg stuff but I've heard that it's a speciality over here.

Staff behavior more like dhaba, even looks like dhaba. This is the worst case scenario of an ICH.. only one waiter is appointed for order placement. You have to wait alot for order your food. You can only eats breakfast, Not suitable for dinner or full course meal, because they didn't offer any dinner dishes, neither chapati no sabji also not any rice dal in menu.... SHOULD HAVE NAMED IT INDIAN COFFEE CHAUPATI.

Whenever I visit Allahabad I make sure that I visit Indian Coffee House. Masala dosa and cold coffee are my favorite and is always part of my order. Idly, vada and roohafza are also good. Service is bit slow. Sitting in family section gives a better experience. The prices charged are very economical.

It will be giving you the feeling of the real coffee house which used to be at the time of independence. The staff are having uniform in white and the cap too which were used in the restaurants in olden times. GOOD PLACE FOR A CHEAPER BREAKFAST and can spend good time too with a cup of coffee.

  • 2/5 Vaibhav G. 4 years ago on Google
Nice place to hangout and celebrate reunion parties but check their serving items before you make your order. They are very discrete about their order because last time when I visited this place I order Cheese Sandwich. They simply give my some triangle slice of white bread and just a single slice of cheese between them and nothing. So be specific about your order.

Indian Coffee House was a legendary place attracting intellectuals, philosophers, thinkers for leisurely coffee and discussions. With phenomenal change in the city landscape, the coffee house building got surrounded by new constructions. It's disappointing for those who frequented it, say 30 or 40 years ago. The Victorian facade seems dilapidated. The staff are uniformed and courteous. You do get a glimpse of old days when they serve you in that traditional style and make you feel like a welcome guest.

Indian Coffee House is a chain of workers co-operation society established in Bangalore in 1957. Although it's history dates back further and was then known as India Coffee House during the British raj. You'll probably be sitting in one of their 400 strong chain of restaurants anywhere in in india whenever you crave for a cuppa coffee or a masala dosa. The one in Allahabad had had its fare share of politicians, freedom fighters, poets, writers, travellers, intellectuals in its heydays. The ones we see now is a far cry from from yesteryears. Food is good and on a budget. Service is okay too if you're not rushed. I would suggest a south indian fare with a cup of hot or cold coffee. Munch away with a good book or with a group of friends and take in bit of history. This place has so much of nostalgia attached to it especially for the senior citizens.

I loved every minute spent at this legendary place. So people who go there looking for just some food and paying the money for it may not like it because it's not the usual place you find these days. This place symbolizes the essence of Allahabad. This place has a character strengthened by years of history. It has it's very distinct persona embedded in a very English culture that we had till late 1950's after the Brits left India. The walls of Coffee House have heard political discussions of every hue over the years. I went there to experience all that I heard about it as my father visits the place almost daily....and trust me I wasn't disappointed. I loved the old world charm to the last bit. Cherry on the cake was yummy sandwiches at an unbelievable price. Warm and welcoming staff.

Old classy place, Dosa were good for the price I had paid, although can improve the sanitation. I had to Indian coffee house in various other cities(Shimla, Delhi, Bangalore ) but this one was not comparable (due to sanitation).

One of the oldest coffee house in Prayagraj. Interior and furniture are also old, but hygiene and staff are too good. Rates are damn reasonable. Food quality and taste is good. Good place to stop over a cup of coffee for a conversation.

Lost it charm. Food and atmosphere have deteriorated drastically. It's a dull cafe with even more dull sambar. The prices are comical for what you get. Its glory days are gone with the charming crowd it once catered to.

I visited the Indian coffee house on 9th december 21 with my family for breakfast. The building is having the old look and ambience inside. There are many items available on the menu veg and nonveg. Surprisingly there is no place for tea. I ordered veg cutlet and veg pakora from here my real experience starts. It seems to me that they prepare veg cutlet and pakora in advance and keep them in fridge when order comes they deep-fry and serve hot. But in the month of cold december when they fried the outer layer of both the things become hot and ice cold from inside and whole of my family left it after few bytes. Their coffee is marvellous in taste. They are also selling coffee powder@1200 per kg. Rates are reasonable. Parking facility is there.Again I will visit 5his place and edit my rating.Till then not of my liking

Quite disappointing. Having eaten extensively at church street Bangalore and highly satisfied was expecting something similar if not better. Food was bland. Chutney too. Coffee could have been better , may be it’s the milk.

  • 5/5 Prem ji K. 2 years ago on Google
Good quality of Dosa available in many kind of varieties. Utpam is good. Idli sambhar and bada sambar also good. Good service and staff. Ambiance need to be better. Overall everything is better.

  • 5/5 Amit Singh R. 2 years ago on Google
Visited after a time gap of 12 years. Found same servers from my school days, who have been working there since 20+ years. Used to have dosas and idli, wadaas, hot coffees along with friends as it was very close to our school. Near to Indian Coffee House it's a cool place still. Neither the taste has changed nor the repetitions of sambhar and chutneys. Still loved it and it reminisces the memory lane with it's taste and aroma.

A classic restaurant of Allahabad. Step in, and feel the old-city charm even downtown Civil Lines - and with prices that can NOT be beat! Before coffee shops became the modern, new thing to spring up all over the city, they had been serving quality coffee for decades. Definitely a place to experience.

  • 5/5 Tarkeshwar Nath R. 1 year ago on Google

Taste of food was is very normal. Didn't enjoy there. Seating are is ok. Service is average. Overall I would like to give 2.5 stars out of 5. Price of food items is average e.g. Idli 2 Pcs. ₹70, vada 2 Pcs. ₹80, half coffee 25, full coffee 35 etc. Location is prime, food is not.

The only attraction is the fact that it's old establishment. Otherwise very noisy, unhygienic , non functional fans, broken furniture with ok food , stuarts in uniform with gloomy face . Prices are too high in comparison to food, services , ambience . card machine for payment is not functional .
