Away from the hustle and bustle of the city of Kashi lies this place of abundant serenity where you can pause to recollect your thoughts and just make sense of everything in the calm. The place is a regular for Buddhist monks meditating and others to just be at peace. It's usually never crowded here and the tranquility is to feel for. History buffs would also be enthused to visit the Sarnath museum.

*Sarnath is a good place to visit. Have seen and read many old artifacts in history books, which will be seen here. *The ticket price is Rs 30 which includes museum and park fare. You can book the tickets via Paytm (Scan QR code at the entrance gate) *It closes early by 5.30 so plan a day for the first half. *It is just 10-12 Km away from Varanasi, but due to congested roads and choked traffic journey time is more than 45 mins *Mobile phones are not allowed inside the Museum premises, but you can carry a digital camera.

Not much to see - more of this stuff in other museums. Better preserved, elsewhere, too. This is not a bad museum, but it just is not impressive at all. Things are reasonably documented and explained. The structure of the place is not very logical, you have to walk and then walk back the same route. Getting a ticket is cumbersome. The price for foreigners is unfair. Photography is not allowed. And staff is less than charming.

There is a famous Archaeological Museum at the Sarnath built for placing and protecting the historical things very safely as an ancient antique There are many mini stupas that can be seen around the Dhamek Stupa and is believed to have been built by Emperor Ashoka as a mark of respect to Lord Buddha. A big Buddha Statue is located at the Thai Buddha vihara of height 80 ft. It is considered as the tallest standing Buddha statue at Sarnath. It was built originally of stone over 14 years during the Indo-Thai joint effort. This statue also called Bhuddha's “Bahubali” Statue. @ Sarnath Museum

One of the best and well managed/preserved museum in India. Primarily Buddhist museum but you may found various Hindu statues inside. Fully air conditioned museum. Indian emblem of 4 lion's statue is located on entrance. There is no any ticket counter for this museum, rather we need to book tickets online and produce receipt on gate. You are not allowed to take mobile phones inside but digital cameras are allowed.

Very beautiful place to get connected to the Gautam Buddha and the Buddhism. The history is very ancient and you must take a guide. The places are well preserved and hold a great importance to the Buddhists. It closes early by 5.30 so plan a day for the first half. Just 20 minutes away from the varanasi.

It's great to hear Buddha Stories etc. But frankly there's nothing interesting to 'See' (atleast Indians would not enjoy much). Foreigners/ Architects may like. In case you plan to go, then take a guide, only that will make it interesting.

Amazing medium sized museum that has (Maurya, Etc., era kingdoms) sculptures + Ashoka's Lion capital (in use as National Emblem of India). Museum is beautifully created, architecture from outside looks like Parliament building. Building is inverted U shaped, entry from central area (front), pathway adjacent building from one end & exit to main gate from another end. At center of complex, garden present with ample of green grass. Caretakers are visible, maintaining park, building. Building security is good, guards at complex entry gate, inside near garden, again at building entry with sensor machine. Plus, lots of camera eyes on visitors. Museum houses most of Sarnath excavation sculptures. Note - Phone isn't allowed inside museum building. You will have to deposit/safe keep in locker just after entry gate inside a room. Photography allowed only via digital camera. Only limited entry allowed in batches (groups of certain people) at a time to avoid crowd inside building.

The Sarnath Museum holds a profound significance as the place where Lord Buddha imparted his first teachings. It serves as a repository of religious and historical importance, shedding light on the profound wisdom of Lord Buddha. If you're planning a visit, ensure you allocate an entire day, as it is located on the outskirts of Varanasi.

Welcome to Sarnath Museum Amid natural surroundings, lies the Archaeological Museum; which exhibits the Buddhist Cultural wealth, recovered from the site of Lord Buddha's first sermon at deer park Mrigadava in Sarnath. As the findings are mostly from Buddhist monasteries or vihar, the plan of building was designed by James Ransome on the pattern of a Sangharam or a vihar. The noble idea was conceived by Sir John Marshal, the then Director General of Archaeology in view of Buddhist character of antiquities. The construction of museum building began in 1904 & was completed in 1910. The Central hall is as main chapel, galleries as monastic cells and verandah occurring as in front of cells in a monastery. The whole building is made of sandstone with flat roof. HISTORY OF SARNATH Sarnath is one of the four most important Buddhist Pilgrimage centers. According to Mahaparinibbna Sutta, Buddha himself told his disciples to visit four places- Lumbini, BodhaGaya, Sarnath and Kusinagara which were connected with his birth, enlightenment, first preaching and decease ( nirvana) respectively. In ancient Buddhist literature the places finds mention as Rishipatana Mirgadava or Mirgadaya. The Place was called Rishipatana, as it was here the bodies of five hundred Pratyaka Buddhas Or Rishis (sages) fell after their attainment of nirvana ( salvation). The inscriptions of early medieval period found Sarnath referred to this place as Dharmacharkra or Saddharmachakrapravarttanavihara ( Convent of the Turning of the Wheel of the law). The Modern name Sarnath seems to be a contraction of Saraganatha (Lord of deer) still borne by the Lord Shivaenshrined in a temple nearby. Sarnath is also sacred to the Jainas because they look upon it as the site of asceticism and death of Sreyansantha the eleventh Trithankara . Buddha the great sage after attaining enlightenment at BodhGaya came to Sarnath and delivered his first sermon to five monks (i.e. Kaundinya, Vappa, Bhadriya, Mahanaman and Asvajit) for redeeming humanity. It is this place where foundation of new order of monks (Sangha) and new order of religious doctrine (Dhamma) was laid.

Be in a mindset of absorption and curiosity and you won't fail to have a great time. Oh! Only camera photography allowed. No phone camera nor any recording. :)

Doesn't matter you are history lover or not, visiting this museum will not disappoint you. Photography is strictly prohibited inside so I am sorry I cannot show you what I saw. Beautiful and serene. Must visit places in Varanasi, located some 15-20 km frm the city but the city traffic and narrow lanes will make it feel like 50+ km. A special request for the authorities " please keep the toilets clean" and ban Gutka/pan chewing inside the premises. These spitting cobras( gutka chewers) are the real reason behind red wall corners, roads and ugly side of UP. Overall a very happy and peaceful experience 😌

Sarnath Museum is very nice. The artwork done on the stones here was very nice. By coming here we got to know about our old civilizations.

A few kilometers auto ride from Dashashwamedh Ghat, Varanasi. Must visit places include ASI Museum, Jain Temple, Sarnath Buddha Temple, etc. Should also attend the Light Ceremony at Dhamekh Stupa for tickets for Rs. 100-150

A great legacy.Needs more efforts to clean since public behaviour is not upto the mark compared to the value of the museum articles.

Visited on Saturday, the entry fee was just Rs.5 for Indians, but the catch is u can't pay cash, digital payment, only PayTM code was there, even my advanced OnePlus 9 Pro could not read that, at last the security guard guided me to open Google camera to open, get link and paid through Google pay, i was wondering how a common man can use this digital payment, mindless creation. You can't carry ur phone and handbag, there is a locker facility but seeing the safety we didn't use, i sat outside only my fellow companion went inside. The museum close at 5 PM but the staffs closed the gate at 4.45 PM, one family came and requested them to open, but initially they refused later on they understood that he was a big official, all in a sudden everything changed, they opened it, there was guide for them and they carried mobile phone and bags. They kept open after 5 O clock also. They are not friendly for common man, the authority should look into the payment method. I was told the collection of artfacts well maintained.

Very peaceful and informative place, museum really full of lots of knowledge and mind-blowing statues related to Buddhism and Hinduism also, between the era 300 BC to 1200 AD. Must visit sarnath ancient stupas and museum.

It was an amazing experience to see the collections from the ancient Ashoka empire. It was fascinating to see how people in those times dressed and the various instruments they used in their day to day life. The place is nearly maintained. Ticket must be bought online. Mobile phone is not allowed inside. But Camera is allowed. Overall I recommend to visit to get first hand experience of the human evolution.

One of the most popular historical places to visit if you are in Varanasi..you have to book auto from Varanasi to reach here. You can enjoy the ruins of Buddhist stupas and museum. You have to purchase the online ticket for the museum.

If you are tired or pressed for time, you can safely skip this museum. It is an ordinary museum and nothing extraordinary. It is very near to the Sarnath Stupa complex. It has a separate compound and gate. The museum complex is very well maintained. There is a clean rest room to the right of the museum building

It was sooo amazing place , I learned so much from there, it's especially very good for history students, there was mainly about buddha. People come from foreign countries to visit so we can understand how knowledgeable and beautiful place it is. I experienced calmness and relaxation there, you can study there and can even spend your whole day. I loved it! And gonna visit again again.
