Very odd experience. We were warned that the venue was busy but that they could seat us. This didn't alarm us as we had no problem waiting for food (it was Father's Day, everywhere is busy!). Unfortunately this actually translated to poor service including a forgotten drink, forgotten sauce (leading to cold steak whilst we await the sauce!) and undercooked chips. Not the end of the world of course, but when we asked for the bill we asked for some money off in light of the poor service (leaving the amount up to them). We were then told that they were unhappy to give a discount because "you were warned." This left us made to feel like money-grabbers! We quickly paid and were very happy to dodge dessert there and grab some treats at a petrol station! I can't speak for their typical service given it was Father's Day. The venue is lovely, good selection of beers and the standard pub fare you'd hope for. Your mileage might vary!

A pleasant enough meal but it's the little things that can make a place rank higher than others. Staff pleasant, but seemed slightly disorganised. Small thing, but the mains came out before anyone had cleared the starter plates. The food was fine. The pies were a bit dry especially round the edges but the meat was succulent and tender with plenty of taste. The cheese pie was a little bland. The burger went down very well also. No one came over and asked if everything was ok and ordering more drinks was more difficult than it should be. Update as of the 18-Aug-22. Very little has changed even though it's now run by a different chain. Good to see they had a choice of no alcohol beers. I had something called three cheese pie and again it was a little bland, dry and the texture felt more like the consistency of scrambled egg that's overdone. We were in a group of 12 and overall the service was fine.

Food is amazing, staff are friendly especially Sarah who served me - she is da bomb. And its a cosy place to have a meal. Great pub, amazing location and very welcoming.

I hosted hubby’s surprise 40th birthday party in the barn and it was such a lovely venue. We started decorating at 10am and the staff were very accommodating in providing whatever I asked for. The children were happy playing at the play area while the adults chatted inside. The party food was very good, too.

A family friendly country pub from JW Lees that's a short walk from Dunham Massey. Offering a Sunday Roast this place has a small playground for children and plenty of outdoor eating options. Food wise, it's all perfectly appetising and cooked well but didn't blow my socks off. It's good but lacking a little in terms of flavours, everything is there but the Yorkshire pudding was a little too solid, the vegetables a little floppy and the potatoes were lacking the crunchy exterior that makes them great. It's a great meeting point and perfect for a family with small children.

A lovely pub in a beautiful setting. We visited this pub after going to Dunham Massey. It was a lovely sunny day so the parking area was almost full, we did however find a space. First impressions were very good with very nice gardens and lots of outside seating. There is a kids play area that is cleverly far enough away not to bother guests without children. The pub itself was really nice inside and all the staff looked very clean and tidy. We were greeted by the lady manager/owner whilst she was busy with other customers. We ordered our drinks and sat outside to choose our food. The menu was good with a nice selection of light bites and main meals too. We decided on light bites. Squid followed by duck pate for me. Both were excellent. My partner had fries and cheesy ciabatta. There was a slight mix up on our order but it soon got resolved. A pleasant overall experience, with just a couple of negative comments: We were harrased by wasps the whole time, (not the pubs fault, more nature). A selection of sandwiches/baguettes would be a nice addition to the menu. I would definitely visit the rope & anchor again.

Used to love the place but gone down hill lately. No problem with dogs but not while I'm eating. Gents toilets needed a good clean. Sunday roast was nice but cold. Won't be going back. First time out for a long. Real Shame

Really enjoyed our Sunday lunch at the Rope & Anchor. Great service from Alice, we were looked after very well throughout. Can recommend the Sunday roasts, delicious! One key thing to note, you need to make a reservation as they get VERY busy on a Sunday.

I haven't been here in years ...it's changed in style and food has definitely improved... service was a little slow....I'm not sure if it's short of staff. Food was good.. maybe a little cold...on one of the dishes..(.4 people)

Visited here recently for a meal with my partner and his family, and I've got to say it was pretty appalling. When entering the restaurant nobody welcomed us, so we went over to the bar to order a drink and let them know we had a reservation. The staff clearly know nothing about customer service because we didn't get any. Then the meal itself was awful. Food came out warm, not hot. Most of it was overcooked and extremely dry. Not one staff member came over to check if everything was okay. And when the manager came over to clear the table, they didn't even say one word to us. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, huge let down.

Very dissapointing Sunday Lunch and expensive with the only redeeming factor being the half decent selection of wine. Sorry another one the restaurant is actually very cosy and has a nice atmosphere.Meat cooked to an inch of its life and cauliflower cheese rock hard. Calamari tasted and looked came from a packet, the salad had no dressing even though it was supposed to come with. Service not particularly good either, slow and did not listen.

Nice pub lunch but nothing overly special. Roast dinner was average (dry turkey, not much gravy & undercooked cabbage) but the potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were lovely. Would recommend the steak pie. Service was friendly and quick. Nearly didn’t get a table as we didn’t book on a Sunday but when we sat down there were plenty of tables free.

Had our Grandson's birthday tea Thursday early evening 28.01.22. We arrived just in time to order from the early bird menu before 17:00. Great cut down menu for 2 or 3 courses. There were 4 adults and 2 children. Kids meals chosen were a burger d chips & sausages with Yorkshire pud & chips. Both were good and the kids enjoyed them. 2 of us had prawn cocktail followed by rump steak & chips with peppercorn sauce and the other 2 had hummus followed by sea bass fillets on sautéed potatoes with sanfire & wilted spinach. All went down well, with special mention for the rump steak cooked rare (gorgeous) & the sea bass perfectly cooked. Excellent. Unfortunately the service was lacking. It wasn't terrible and they were pleasant, they just couldn't be bothered. Had to ask for almost everything, nothing was offered or presented without having asked for it. Pity really, great food, great place very average service.

We took a drive out to the countryside on Sunday - one of the delights of Manchester is you’re never more than about 20 mins away from the ‘great British greenery’. The Rope & Anchor is large pub with a nice garden and plenty of parking. We weren’t really hungry so, swerved the Sunday roasts in favour of a small fish and chips and a fillet steak. Both were tasty but nothing special - the steak was a little overcooked and the sauce lacked seasoning. We shared a really nice starter - Bury black pudding served on a buttered crumpet with crispy bacon and a poached egg! Spot on. Service was friendly and prices fair.

Amazing food, as always!! Great service and our waitress so so friendly and lovely. Even pointed out that she thought we had paid too much when we gave her a £12 tip. Throughly deserved it. We ordered cheese and onion pie, was unreal!! Steak and ale pie - amazing and super flakey pastry. Tower burger - was huge Chicken chasseur - ultra smooth mash with this. 2 large fish and chips - absolutely huge portions!! Was so crispy and tasty Would highly recommend

It's the first time my husband and I had been in, after a lovely walk at Dunham Massey. We fancied something snacky, bar food style but unfortunately we were told that they don't do bar food, in a rather dismissive way, it's a book only restaurant service. We asked if we could just have a drink and it felt like we were shoved round a corner, where there were 3 or 4 tables to choose from. I'm not sure if it was because it was a Sunday, or if its always like that, but it has put us off returning, sorry.

Beautiful traditional upscaled pub and restaurant. Very pleasant and welcoming staff. My wife and I just arrived to the from Ireland and we found this beautiful place. Food and drink was wonderful and we most definitely will be back on our next trip. Highly recommended and thank you again for having us

Excellent service, food was lovely! We were celebrating an occasion, staff made us feel special. Served by Sayenna, she was very accommodating and appreciated we had two young children with us, making suggestions of serving the children’s food first etc. Will be back soon

We went for a meal with friends to celebrate a birthday. We were served for most of the evening by Eshaan he was very polite and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. I think this young man will go far he is a hard worker. The meal was of a good standard and we enjoyed our evening. The Rope and Anchor is always a nice friendly clean pub. Would recommend

Went here this sunday for my mum's 90th birthday. On arrival we was given menu's and was told there was a few things not available, which was very disappointing. We was also told no hot drinks as they had no milk, found that very strange for a restaurant to run out of milk. Service was great food that we did eat was delicious

Food was excellent and the kids menu gave them the choice that others sometimes fail to. Staff were really busy and did their very best with good humour but they could have done with extra people. The pies both steak and ale and the 3 cheese are greatly recommended.

Lovely country pub to stop and relax, either for a meal or just a drink. All our 4 meals were very tasty and very quickly served. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Free car park can get quite full on a Sunday lunchtime / afternoon. They also have a nice private room for parties.

We came here for a meal to spend some quality time together and commemorate the anniversary of my grandfather's passing. Unfortunately, we didn't have the best experience. Our meal started off well, as they were able to seat us early and we ordered what we wanted quickly. About 20 minutes after the plates for the starters had been taken away, we were approached by a server who let us know our mains were no longer available. This was upsetting because my mother is a vegetarian and the choice for her is limited. We eventually settled on alternatives and waited for them to arrive. Mine was lovely, but my mother's meal was cold and had to be sent back to be redone. They were very kind and voided our entire bill, when an apology would have been more than enough. However, I was considering having dessert, and assumed anything from this point on would still require me to pay as I don't expect anything for free. The server we asked for menus was different from the others and was quite rude; barely looking at us as she tossed the menu at me. I decided against dessert in the end, as the server never came back, and we double checked with another server if we had anything to pay for before leaving. The food here is typically lovely, but I would recommend coming on a quiet day in the week.

This place is now effectively a restaurant that serves beer. Very smart, good food but definitely not the place to go if you are looking for a few beers with your mates

Popped in for lunch. Tried a few of the small plates. Scallops were delicious, as was rhe caprese salad. Will be making a return visit for these dishes alone. Only gave 4 stars as the loaded fries weren't very loaded at all and were dried out so we didn't eat them.

Love this place and have always been a regular visitor over the years. It’s been a long while this time round though and I’m a little disappointed!!! We Visited here Saturday evening and we were a little bit disappointed. My little one had sausage, mash and gravy from the kids menu, which was below average. The sausages were rock hard and appeared to have been reheated. The mash was less than a spoon full and again was reheated. She was still starving when we got home, which defeated the object of us eating out!!!! The lamb shank was very small but tasted amazing …. Again my husband was still hungry when we got home. I had a burger which was lovely! I know it was late in the day but this isn’t exactly cheap and I believe this should have been fresh cooked food and not microwave or reheated 😢

This looked like a really nice pub externally. We popped in after a walk and stepped into cosiness and great smells. We waited and a large lady eventually spotted us and said she would get someone for us. A guy then turned up and just said "sorry fully booked". No chance /offer to even have a drink.. despite a few tables being free.. so we awkwardly left

Great decor. Very accommodating. Great Sunday lunch. Reasonably priced and plenty. Plenty of car parking and dogs allowed.

  • 1/5 Zoe W. 2 years ago on Google
Very disappointed. Drinks orders incorrect, salmon overcooked with curdled parsley sauce, veggie pasta tiny portion, oily and made with 20+ whole cloves of garlic with limited veg and pasta, calves liver mushy. In fairness the burger was fine. The meals aren't cheap, so was expecting much better meals and service. Not good value for money. Won't be back in a hurry.

A planned meal for 8 friends. Lovely setting but the food and service was extremely poor. Took over an hour after ordering for food. No warning or apologies. Said busy but it clearly wasn't. Brought the 2 quicker meals out once we threatened to leave. Both meals wrong, cold and poor quality. The other meals were good but seemed to be microwaved to reheat. Partial hot and cold. Just got the second drinks for free. For the money we paid it was not worthy. Won't be recommending.

Firstly, no problem with the staff, absolutely lovely and astute. Interior is very lovely and chilled. Dog friendly as well. The food is not worth the money, had a steak and ale pie which was the driest thing known to man, the chips were undercooked and the peas couldn't even be called peas. Typical JW Lees pub, won't be coming back.

Friendly staff but not that attentive even though it was quiet. Food was good, Gammon steak with an onion bhaji……different but very tasty.

Lovely location for circular walks in the Dunham Massey area. Very nice food and great service. Thanks to Phoebe for booking a table for us at short notice (when they were busy with functions), and for allowing us to leave our car on the car park whilst we went on our walk before lunch in the pub. Will happily visit again when in the area. Highly recommended. Many thanks

Worst experience ever. After giving our drinks order and receiving our drinks, we were asked if we were ready to order, we hadn't been given any menus. This being rectified, the server came back 1 minute later and asked if we were ready to order - who can read a menu and decide in a minute? Having given our order, the starters arrived and were really nice. Then came the mains, I only ordered a small beer battered fish and chips - to say the fish was the worst I have ever tasted is an understatement, it was rubbery and chewy, not flakey as cod should be and the chips were oven chips - yuk. Needless to say it was sent back and removed from the bill. Overall, the service was well below par. If it was busy I could maybe understand but the place was empty. I will not be going back.

Really good early Sunday Evening meal. The pub looked like a country Pub should look, smart and inviting as we arrived. We ate outside in an attractive spacious area. Protected by an umbrella, much needed during this heatwave. We had the Cheese and onion pie, which took some beating, but customers near us being served with the Sunday Roast made us wonder about our choice....as looking on, it appeared just right!! A good wine list included was pleasing. Helpful friendly and professional service. Definitely be returning.

Nice pub. Garden has good play area. Decor inside is good. Decent annex and upstairs space for events. Good selection of drinks. Sunday roasts are excellent.

Beer was great, no issues. Food left a lot to be desired. Two of our party ordered the roast butternut squash, they got some sort of vegetarian patty that showed no signs of ever being near butternut squashes. I ordered salt and pepper squid for starter and a refried chip had found it's way to the bottom of the bowl. I ordered Roast Beef for a main, which said it came with Horseradish Sauce. When it arrived I had to ask for the sauce. Could have been a lot better.
