The facilities at Planet Ice Altrincham, especially during morning patch, are absolutely shocking. The ice pad is covered in lumps that can be as high as 5cm each, which is an extremely dangerous hazard and has caused many unnecessary falls and injuries. In addition to this, skaters also have water dripping all over them from the ceiling. This is an issue that we have at Planet Ice Altrincham EVERY summer. I train at this rink 5 to 6 mornings per week, however, it’s impossible to attempt working on your skills with the ice being in such a bad condition when the weather is warm. I had been lucky enough to never injure myself badly because of the lumps until Wednesday this week when my blade caught a really high lump whilst I was skating backwards. Needles to say, I’ve had to stop training this week as my right knee and wrist are badly bruised, swollen and in a lot of pain. However, this has also affected my day to day at work as I can’t perform my tasks properly. Trying to find a way to be able to train, skaters that tend to be on the ice at 6am (myself included) would spend a good 20 to 25 minutes of their practice trying to remove the lumps with their own blades, risking damaging them. Countless times I'd be asked what had I done to my blades by the person who grinds them, as the edges would have marks and dents from this. Frustrated skaters have tried getting a resolution from the local staff, who say HQ aren’t willing to provide budget to fix the issue, which is totally unacceptable. Apart from the additional costs that come from loving skating (i.e. private lessons, parking, etc.) we pay a rather expensive monthly fee to be able to train. The least that management can do is ensure the facilities are up to a standard for us to do so.

What an incredible night at The Storm Shelter, home of the Manchester Storm! This venue, owned by Planet Ice, added to the overall enjoyment of the event. The facilities provided by The Venue were not only suitable but also contributed significantly to the game day experience. As for the Manchester Storm, they truly put on a great show. While the Nottingham Panthers emerged victorious with a 4-2 win, the Storm displayed remarkable sportsmanship and determination throughout. It's evident that this team has a bright future ahead. The atmosphere in the arena remained family-friendly, and the club shop offered reasonably priced merchandise for die-hard fans. Refreshments were also available at acceptable prices. Additionally, The Venue offers public ice skating and lessons during the week and weekends, making it a versatile and engaging place for people of all ages and skill levels. I wholeheartedly recommend attending a Manchester Storm game at The Storm Shelter to support this exceptional team and enjoy a fantastic sporting experience!

Absolutely amazing, I can't I've skate but its something my 6 year old has wanted to do for a while, oh wow. Customer service is spot on. Theres a guy who works on there, he's absolutely amazing, he take his time to show my 6 year old how to skate slowly, done everything he could do for her and me. She had amazing time, ended up with the polar bear, we had a blast again cant thank the guy enough xxx

A good ice rink with decent facilities. Toilets, cafe, vending machines etc. Staff are friendly and helpful. It could be quite pricy when you think you have to pay to skate, pay extra to hire skates, pay for parking and then pay for a locker if you want to store your things. Lockers are £2 for 3 hours or £3 for 6 hours. They have great little aids for young ones who struggle to skate - such as penguins / polar bears / seals for young kids to hold on to while they skate. Price to hire: £7 penguin £7.50 polar bear £8 seal The kids loved it and there is no time limits. We slated for almost 3 hours. Overall a very decent place and a good day out for the family, although it could be a tad pricy.

Really fun skating experience, but I’m a bit confused about the situation of hiring the skates. I booked online in advance and also purchased a skates package that said it would give me access to the provided ice skates. However, when we went to the counter to hire skates, the man didn’t even question whether we had bought them or not. He just asked for our shoe sizes and gave them to us. That makes me think I didn’t need to purchase the five pound something skates package and could’ve just got them for free. So if you’re booking online, don’t bother buying the skates - they’ll just give them to you without checking if you’ve bought them or not :)

Nice hockey match for the UK. We're from Slovakia, so ice hockey and the league is much better in our country, but for UK, we loved the match and the stadium.

Excellent ice rink....have been to a few birthday parties and the kids enjoy their time. Large paid parking lot and some hot coffee available inside too. Definitely recommend visiting!

Total waste of an eye watering 30 quid.(unbelievable price but I foolishly thought you only get what you pay for) Took my 6 year old son. Had prepaid a fee for hire of ice skates (new one on me) When we arrived we Asked for the size of skates for my son, only to be told he wasn't allowed ice skates only special ice shoes that clip over the top of his normal shoes .. but why I asked he has been skating before. Several times before! He is getting good. No we can't give you normal ice skates.. so I ask if we can have a penguin and ice skates. Like normal rinks give you No you have to book a penguin through the front office. So we have to give in and accept the skate shoes and walk around a totally packed rink for an hour which actually resembles a swimming pool. My son didn't improve or enjoy himself. He was actually really sad especially as he saw lots of kids skating in ice skates ..children even younger than him. (Rented skates) Awful experience. On top of everything else the place feels like it is from the 60s. So old and decrepit. Total waste of money and time. I actually can't think of one good thing to say about it. Never ever again.

The place looks battered, car park was full of rubbish which put me off right away. It was so busy that I doubt this place meets any safety standards. What is the point in letting so many people in that they can't have fun as ice-skating is nearly impossible. It's expensive as we paid £45 for a family of 3 with skates. The only positive side was a long slot we were given. We won't be back.

Planet ice is a favourite with us.skating or learning new skills is good fun. The car park is £2 for 2 hours £2.40 on the app. Lockers need a pound for your shoes if you've brought skates. Always people who will share their knowledge and experience if you ask them. I'll be back

Easy location to get to either by public transport or car. The train station is literally next door and the car park (council run) is large, £2.50 for 3 hours- but perhaps could do with re-surfacing (!). All the staff I have come across are very friendly & helpful, chap who was running the skate hire at the time came over and helped me when I had split my chin on the ice (from my own new/unsharpened skates) and was changing into my trainers. Sorry I didn't get his name at the time, but was an older gent wearing a baseball cap. I've recently had my skates sharpened there, this costs just £7 and they were done within a week. Not always easy to get hold of on the phone, but I sent an email enquiry in and it was replied to in about 2 minutes (!) by a member of the team called Dani. She was also very polite & helpful when I called in to drop off and collect my skates. The rink itself is large and has always been well maintained every time I've been, which is becoming weekly now. There's usually people of all levels skating round on the rink and everyone seems to give each other enough room for error. I'm looking forward to taking my 2 daughters to see the ice hockey fairly soon as well.

A little old, and run down. Went for the Ice Hockey, as they have an EIHL team, Manchester Storm. We were away fans.... Great customer service, warm and welcoming. Can't speak about ice skating, as I wasn't there for that. But 20 quid for a top league Hockey game.... brilliant.

Watching Manchester Storm is a great evening out, the ice hockey is great fun. The place could do with a little refurbishment though but realistically I'm just there to watch the ice hockey, not to watch the aesthetics of the building

Went to see Manchester Storm. Great place loved every second being in it, and well staffed with a good selection of drinks and food. Park in Tesco since it's a great place to stock up, and is within walking distance to the arena.

The website was not letting me book, I tried for 2 days. Turned up and it was full. Needs to be a better booking system. It's a shame, I used to love going to hockey here before family and was looking forward to taking my 3 year old.

Quite expensive £14pp entry and extra on top for skate hire ! Although there are some package deals for families.. Cafe food not very appetising chips, burger, hotdog and again expensive ..would take your own food and drinks snacks etc also the tables were taken by people not eating or drinking! Coffee from machine pretty rubbish but hot .

Always enjoy coming here, been coming for years since I was a kid. Can look busy on the ice but it works and once your going plenty of space. Had a section blocked off for some dancing on ice practice. I'm assured it was a celebrity I had no clue. Didn't get in the way of our fun

What can I say?? I've been before and it wasn't great but today was the worst I've seen. The toilets are disgusting. They're dirty, seats are broken and not much toilet roll. The staff aren't too great either. One manager spent her whole time stood watching children from the glass, telling them off and even kicked one out. One Marshall seems more interested in showing off his skills than actually helping out. The food is awful and overpriced but you're not allowed to bring your own food. My children dont like fried foods or processed foods but unless they have a specific allergy you're not allowed your own food. For nearly £70 for my family of 4 for only 2 hours is a rip off. The building is generally tatty and dirty and the penguins are so expensive too so my young son had to do without as it was just too much. If you want to be ripped off and glared at for 2 hours then I recommend this place, if not find another place to take the children.

Far too busy, everything was a bit chaotic with huge queues. Ran out of penguins and my 6 year old was too scared to skate without, especially with how busy it was. Nothing to hold onto around the rink. Really disappointed and feel as though i wasted my money. Inside the facilities look tired and dated and the toilets are a bit grotty. Such a shame, I had high hopes for a fun, festive afternoon and it was far from it!

Season Ticket holder for Manchester Storm Ice Hockey. Couldn't see through the persex in front of my seat. Dirty and full of condensation. Hasn't been cleaned since before Covid. Disgraceful lack of cleaning and needs reporting to Health and Safety exec Hi pleased to say that since posting review the perspex panels have been cleaned. Thank you

They don't sharpen the hire skates!! I've been skating my entire life (30+ years) but don't own skates in the UK. I couldn't move when I got on the ice, no grip on either blade to push off from. For me, it was as strange as suddenly not being able to walk. I went back for a different pair, and explained what was wrong, asking for a pair that had recently been sharpened. "We don't sharpen the hire skates," said the fella behind the counter. Perplexed, I asked "Why?" "Because there are too many," he shrugged. I can't fathom how they have the gumption to charge £35 for skating for two, and can't be bothered to sharpen the skates! The second pair I was given wasn't so dire, but the situation on the ice was a bit chaotic, with several figure skating coaches coaching students at the same time, and not sticking to the middle, so having to dodge people making turns without looking etc. Then a family started playing football with a hockey puck. Where was the marshal?

A friend and I went ice skating on Saturday. Despite pre booking and pre-paying for skates, they had ran out of skates in my size and the ones I eventually got were really painful to wear. I was told that it was just “like this at peak time”, but in that case I don’t understand why I was charged to rent skates at all when pre booking? The people I spoke to at the rental kiosk were pretty rude and said that I had to wait for someone else to turn in some skates and tried to make it my problem for coming at peak time(?!). The ones I eventually had were in poor condition and I couldn’t fasten them properly but it had been about 40 minutes since I’d arrived and only an hour left before the rink shut so I just put them on and tried to skate with my friend who had been struggling on the rink on her own the whole time. Pretty poor experience. I won’t be coming back and if I hadn’t gotten skates that fit me I would’ve asked for a full refund. You should ask people to state their shoe size beforehand on the booking form so they can get some skates that actually fit even at busy times. Not good!

The ice skating was absolutely great fun, and we most probably will return again. However the facilities were a little disappointing, the toilets were pretty awful,at the bottom of the hand dryer was scum and the toilets felt grubby like they needed a deep clean. There were 2 vending machines not working. However these problems didn't affect us having fun. No staff to chat to as we left.

Very helpful staff. I fell on the ice badly and knocked myself out on the ice the staff were very organized and attended to me very professionally and made me feel safe they also looked after my two very upset daughters and calmed them down. 5stars and the higher management need to be proud of the team at the ice rink. Would definitely recommend visiting but becareful the ice is hard.

I am sorry to say I was so so disappointed with my visit yesterday. 1. the staff were ok and friendly enough. 2. free parking is advertised, we paid. 3. the expense, so I use to go to the old ice ring loved it, even got the point of having my own skates. So imagine my shock. you can hardly hold on to the barrier! Clearly just geared towards the ice hockey and good skaters. The horror on some of the faces. How must it be when busy? Carnage I would expect. Thank god it was quite.. so for £30 plus I managed to shuffle half way round and just gave up. Not enough exit points on the ice. Luckily the young person we took had a good time, just being out. Now you say well there are aids to help you skate. Well I didn’t realise I wouldn’t be able to use the aid of a FREE barrier and the cost of these aids are expensive and I had put my bag in the car as didn’t have money for a locker, that I believe you don’t get your money back. So all in all a total waste of money and sadly disappointed and won’t be visiting again. Be warned.

I’ve been going Ice Skating regularly with my two boys and daughter over the summer. I rarely give feedback but after today’s session I wanted to comment about the great service the Ice Marshall’s do to keep the ice safe. Alan in particular was amazing with the boys when they fell over, he gave them tips to improve their skating and how to stop. He came over to check on them throughout the session. He was so patient, constantly praising them and motivating them. Huge thank you Alan. You deserve some kind of recognition for your kindness. See you on the ice soon. 🙋‍♀️

Great place worth driving to. Pay for public access and get up to 5 hours depending on which slot you choose. Free skate hire too!

I frequent here for the ice hockey and there's absolutely no complaints about that. Plenty of food and drink choices on offer (expect queues though), good club shop and the atmosphere is incredible. Fans are like no other, always so friendly and helpful. Storm Support do an amazing job supporting the club and fans too. The venue however could do with an update. Some proper ventilation and some new plastic panels would go a long way to improving the experience on both game days and general skating sessions. Toilets also could do with an update. Highly recommended for a visit on a game day.

I arrived on a Sunday evening ahead of the Storm vs Panthers game and simply wanted to ask a question from the lady on reception. She finished serving the person in front of me and then I stepped forward….she then ignored me for ten minutes as she chatted to colleagues and filled in some paperwork. I then noticed she had a colleague near her, so tried to ask him, but when I started asking, the lady started saying to him and he completely ignored me, only to then come back and ask me again what I wanted. Maybe if you’d paid attention the first time, or I hadn’t been so rudely ignored by BOTH, then I wouldn’t be stood here right now giving them a one star review for zero star customer service.

Had a great time out here. We went for the afternoon session, which is 12 till 3 and got the family of 3 ticket and use of their skates which cost £36. We were there for 2hours but could have got 3hours if arrived earlier so very good value for the money. Will be going again sometime soon.

Very rude staff, the people in reception obviously despise working the public skate sessions. No need to have such a horrible attitude to the non pro-skaters though. Terrible customer service. Now on to the hire skates, honestly shocking. Entirely soaked lining (presumably the last person’s sweat), and the blades, so extremely dull they are actually very dangerous. Unacceptable, and quite literally a liability. Either make sure your skates are clean AND SAFE to use, or don’t rent them out. I would have bought my own if I would have known. A terrible experience, though a good sized venue. Things need to change here.

Great day. Very friendly atmosphere. The ice marshals Darren and Alan kept the place running smoothly and safe. Even tried to teach me to skate. They need a pay rise. Will be back soon.

  • 1/5 Ria W. 2 years ago on Google
Management don't care about health and safety of other skaters during free skate, allowing their regular large groups to hockey stop and purposely fling ice at people's faces when they see someone has fallen and is on the floor. when raised with staff they replied 'i've told you guys to stop doing that' meaning its a regular occurrence, theres small children on the ice, flicking bits of ice by their regular skaters such as Tom Derbyshire and his 'friends' which can damage sight, is disgusting and the management response is worse, no action taken when they're fully aware this is going on and probably more. stay safe.

First ever try at ice skating with my brother and 2 young children at Altrincham and apart from a couple of blisters we all had a fantastic afternoon out. Part of the ice was closed for a while and we saw Torvill & Dean teaching someone to ice skate, quite surreal! Food is nice, reasonably priced and served with a smile. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and a special caps off to Andy for going above and beyond. We're very much looking forward to a return visit!
