Learned a lot about Buddhism here, after talking to a monk. I traveled to Myanmar to get a peace of mind and visiting this place, helped me to let go and move on. The monk emphasized that Buddhism is not a religion rather, it's a philosophy. My friends and I bought a few of their books, and I find it a good read.

Just a 30 min car ride outside of Mandalay, sits Mahagandhayon Monastery, the largest monestary in Myanmar/Burma. Several thousand, many of them young, monks, live here, spending their time studying and praying. The place is quite busy with tourists, especially during the 10 a.m. alm giving ceremony, when food and other necessities are donated by villagers and tourists alike and monks stand in long lines to receive their lunch. It's commercialised but still a nice place to visit and watch the monks going about their daily routine.

Please bring some food for "donation" if you going next time. Some of the monk able to speck English and they willing to explain to you the history of the monastery. Inside the monastery have a mini museum. There is a office inside if you want to donate some money (Receipt would be provided).

Feels very commercialised but still a nice place to people watch (in this case, monks going about on their daily routine). They have this procession that happens every day at 10.15 am where they depart from their dwellings into a common cookhouse for lunch. Over here, I also managed to buy some books on Buddhism written by Burmese monks.

Only 4 things that monks need are Food, Public utility, Medicine and Cloth Here has over 100 monks and so many novoices. I didn't hesitate for donating to this place BTW. It was wonderful time.

One of the treasures of Myanmar "Htera Warda" Buddha teaching centre for young monks. Managed under the rules of Buddha Ethics where more than one thousand trainees and teachers are staying. We take care not to make a noise in the monastery where silence prevails. There are 10 displines for a trainee monk in the monastery. The first one is to have a good mind in one's heart. Monks have to sit for entrance exams to enter the monastery as a student. There are all the year round charity for breakfast and lunch for them: they do not need to walk around the homes for alms. They can pay more time at studying.

Beautiful walk through old trees and a working monastery. I felt like I shouldn't be there, but no one told us to leave so I guess it was ok. Probably the prettiest spot in Mandalay.

I hope there will be less tourists. There are just too many. Some of them were rude and had their phone cameras very close to the monks. Some were giving out snacks to the monk by throwing into their bowl. It was a very disrespectful scenery. The monastery used to be less crowded.

Please get alms or eateries for monks. Very serene experience seeing all monks walking in straight line for breakfast.

"Lunch with the Monks" is a unique experience and a lesson in how to control international tourists who have "loved" this place to death. Only mobile phone cameras now allowed. The "Head of Security Monk" must be congratulated on his management of tourists to protect resident monks and small boys.
