Its very close to U being bridge. 1000 monks gather at the hall during lunch time every day to accept lunch donated by the local people. Visitors can also donate fruits/ snacks, etc to the monks when the monks are walking orderly one by one towards the hall. You can use cell phone to take photos (be respectful) but not DSLR/ professional cameras. Quite a few free roaming dogs in the monastery.

A nice experience but many crowded rude tourists are damaging this eating ceremony. So painful! I think we should respect the life of the monks in their own monastery. Here is NOT the zoo or the show.

It’s nice to witness the ceremony. But people need to be respectful !!! Don’t stand in the middle of the road. Don’t put your cameras as close as right next to the monks’ faces. Don’t take photos of them eating or showering !!! My heart sank seeing the disrespectful behavior of the visitors.

Beautiful walk through old trees and a working monastery. I felt like I shouldn't be there, but no one told us to leave so I guess it was ok. Probably the prettiest spot in Mandalay.

I hope there will be less tourists. There are just too many. Some of them were rude and had their phone cameras very close to the monks. Some were giving out snacks to the monk by throwing into their bowl. It was a very disrespectful scenery. The monastery used to be less crowded.

Maha Gandayone Monastery, It was located in Amarapura ancient city along the eastern bank of the Taung Tha Man Lake. Maha means great and Gandayone means smell. So its means great smell monastery in Myanmar. In Myanmar, there are two types of monastery. Meditation monastery and Buddha's letcure teaching monastery. It is a famous teaching monastery. In there, you can see way of life of the Buddhist monks and the food offering ceremony in everymorning. It already start at 10:30am. So if you visit to there, you have to go at 10am on time.

Nice to see the monks, but being asked for a $200 USD donation and then not accepting a $5 USD donation was very off putting. My small donation isn’t good enough for you? Sanda (if that’s even his name) should know tourists are not just walking wallets.
