One of the most challenging yet magical peaks in Bali, an absolutely incredible experience and Bali's most sacred mountain. Be aware this is still an active volcano so check the conditions first before attempting to scale it. Go with a registered guide, pack warm, wind-proof clothes, plenty of water, and be careful on the last section as it's very steep, very sharp and very dangerous.

Left the hotel in Sanur at 12.20am and rode up to Pura Pasar Agung. I had arranged my guide, Gede, who I hiked with last year up the same route. The threat of the closure of the mountain by the Bali governor in the coming months spurred me to climb it for possibly the last time. The ride took 1 hour and 20 minutes and as there was hardly any traffic. I arrived at the car park at 140am and there were already a heap of cars and bikes in the parking lot. I wasn't really in a rush because I had almost 5 hours until sunrise. I knew from experience that the guides love to socialise and light fires so I had factored this into the time and hence why I left so early. If I went alone and didn't stop I could have just started the hike at 245am. We left the parking at 210am and went up the stairs to the temple. Gede prayed and lit some incense before we headed up. There were some other people who left the same time as us but they just went to the crater and not the summit. We were out of the jungle after 40 minutes and the views really opened up. It was another hour and we arrived to a group with a huge fire. We chatted for 15 minutes before heading off to the junction. This was reached after about 2 hours. Here we left the main trail and traversed along the volcanoes side. At night you can't really see much at all but coming down this place is quite gnarly. Any earthquake or rain and the place would become a bowling alley. We took a few more rests to ensure we didn't get to the top too early and at 550am we made the summit. There were around 10 - 15 people up there on the top and it was a very beautiful morning. Total time up including all the breaks was 3 hours and 48 minutes. If we didn't stop then this could be bought down to 3 hours. We stayed for about an hour on the top before heading down. We were back down at the base in less than 90 minutes and I was back in Sanur by 10am.

One of my favourite place in Bali. It's been so many times going there, like 27 times, but never bored of the vibe, the views, the challenges, the fun, everything was just right. And I feel like this mountain is already like my big brother, always giving me peace when I needed the most. Being there was one of a kind, especially thru the Pasar Agung Melipir path of trekking/hiking route, the best views and challenges. Be sure you are brave enough to go there, and always do the safety first everytime on a hiking.

If you have an extra day in Bali, Mount Agung is definitely the peak you want to consider to reach. With its pyramid like shape, you don't need to worry about setting up tent and all those trouble preparation for mount climbing, just carry enough water to last. At the main summit you'll be rewarded with far reaching view of Bali and as far as Mt Rinjani in Lombok.

Spontaneous) just like that. Otherwise, I would not crawl 3000 meters in shorts and a T-shirt.) The views are cosmos, sunrise and sunset wow! Be sure to take guides, do not save money. Local guys carry water, tents, cook food, clean the camp. You just go and enjoy. Difficulty of ascent and descent on a 10 point scale of 7. A very challenging route for those who don't hike up mountains. You can't get to Agung from the couch) So I recommend you to visit. But only with guides. Simplify your life and. amazing summit in 8 hours hike via Pengubengan Villages to Puncak Sejati. one of my favourite Summit. In the east you can see Mount Rinjani in the west you can see Mount Semeru. was there on September 2017. the forest is amazing during the days. the white flower likes baby breathe is everywhere. all you can see is green and beautiful path. all spot is beautiful in camera. there is a place for camp before the rocky path. hike with guide is a must. 1 guide maximal for 5 persons. if you want to catch the Sunrise you better start at 7 or 8pm from Pengubengan for easy & slow motion hike. so you can take a rest for few hours in the Cave they called it. from the cave to the puncak sejati takes 2 hours because we takes so many selfies. the wind from the cave to get to 2nd summit is very strong. because this area is open surface. once you get to the 2nd summit the wind is stop. this area is covered by the summit. from the 2nd summit to the peak it's call horse back path. i was hike to Mount Agung before via Pura Pasar Agung (Pasar Agung Temple) to get to the Puncak Naga (Dragon Summit). I prefer via Pengubengan village. You can Park you car or Bike in Pengubengan Temple. there is a shop that selling snack, food and satay. they also have toilet. the water is very cold. We are Balinese we pray before we hike. provide some offering as a peace masaage for all creatures who live in the forest and the mountain. and don't bring any food that contain of beef. as it is only takes less than 1 day to get to the summit and back, don't bring many stuff. 2 big water bottle and some snack bars is enough.

Awesome views and totally worth a tour! Quite a steep ascent but 6 hours are more than enough and allow for several breaks. Very slippery on the way down so make sure you have proper footwear and a good fitness level.

WARNING: If you are going up the Mount Agung Besakih route without a guide, be warned that you will be extorted and threatened by the Balinese 'mafia'. Currently, there is no regulation saying that a guide is required (it is being considered but not a regulation yet). We have been up the mountain a few times before with a guide and this time we decided to without a guide. As soon as we started, we got encircled by these Balinese mafia with sticks saying that we were thieves who came to rob the temple. Then after checking our bags and photos, they changed the tune and started saying that we were not following the regulations by going without a guide. Despite us being calm, respectful and courteous throughout, these guys were aggressive, threatening and rude throughout. One guy threatened to destroy our bikes and another pulled out a knife. All while saying that we were being disrespectful to Balinese culture. Is extorting people and threatening them with sticks and knives part of Balinese culture?? I repeat that we were respectful and courteous throughout and didn't raise our voices. The two other guys who also came without guides were subjected to the same thing as us. After wasting our time, the real scam came out and they asked for IDR 1 million as a 'fine' to let us go. Other groups that came with a guide were allowed to go and we saw these mafia people were only given like IDR 50000 per person. So this IDR 1 million 'fine' is a pure extortion and scam. So do yourselves a huge favour - if you want to climb the Besakih route, get an online guide so it's official and the mafia only gets what's due. Or if you really want to go without a guide go on the Pasar Agung route where there's an official entry fee for going without a guide and you will not be subjected to the Balinese mafia who are a black mark on the otherwise amazing Balinese hospitality. Otherwise you WILL be threatened, extorted and scammed by the Besakih Pos mafia.
