If, like me, you have a deep interest in culture and stories, then this is definitely a place you should visit. Before exploring the museum, I recommend spending a few days immersing yourself in the mesmerizing traditional dances, such as the captivating fire dancing or the mysterious bird of paradise dance. These performances will introduce you to the rich narratives and characters that form the heart of Balinese culture. As you enter the museum, you'll find yourself in a paradise-like garden, adorned with various pavilions that house different exhibits. You have the option to join a guided tour, where a knowledgeable guide will lead you from one building to another, providing insights and stories along the way. Alternatively, you can take your time and explore at your own pace, reading the stories and absorbing the artwork on display. The founder of this enchanted place, is a remarkable collector with a true vision for preserving Balinese culture, as well as the art of puppet drama from all around the world. The museum is a testament to their passion and dedication. I would personally love to engage in conversations with fellow visitors who share an interest in this place. I am interested if you would draw parallels between the characters of good and evil from different cultures, which is an incredibly fascinating and enlightening experience. Prepare to be enchanted by the depth of storytelling and the intricate artistry that awaits you at this museum. It's a place where cultures intertwine, inviting you to explore the universal themes that connect us all.

It's hard to make justice to this place in a few words. Go and see the masks and the stories they tell, learn about the myths and beliefs while visiting traditional Indonesian architecture. These wooden houses, collected from around Indonesian, are astonishing.

Located over 6 different buildings with English and Indonesian information, this museum holds a large number of masks and puppets which are quite impressive in number and quality. The grounds are also large and immaculate, but oddly this location is by donation only. When you visit, you will see that serious money has and will continue to be spent here so it's a mystery how they stay open. I don't really like masks and puppets, but enjoyed here. It's worth a visit if you have the time

What a hidden gem! Amazing collection of masks from all around Indonesia, Africa and Europe as well. The puppets collection is also something that tells more than stories and history too. The garden by itself is so serene and enchanted. Such a peaceful place that is so well maintained. The entrance is free of charge and at the moment of our visit we were the only guests. Highly recommend!

A great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Ubud area. The landscaping is serene and peaceful. It’s a good idea to spend two hours there to understand Indonesian religious culture.

This is a hidden gem. This place is a very large estate with many buildings. It’s a little hard to know where to go but you just go exploring all the buildings. Collections of masks and puppets from mostly Indonesia but also from around world with mostly Asian. Next to nobody was there but the place is kept immaculate. There are some cool wood carver shops nearby to visit too. Had information in English with masks. It was free when I went and seems someone with a lot of money invested in making that place. Great alternative to more popular tourist hotspots.

Absolutely MUST VISIT for those who appreciate culture, history, and art. The guide was very friendly, speaks great english and is very knowledgable. The area is very quiet, not as much tourists and is very breezy and green. It’s well managed and I believe there is no entrance fee. 100% recommend!

Set in a beautiful and well maintained garden, the museum contains around five medium sized buildings filled with masks, shadow puppets and other art. It will take around 30 min to an hour to stroll through the exposition. The entrance is kind of free, but a donation is advised.

I am still impressed by my visit to the museum. This visit added me positive emotions, energy, strength, faith in my abilities. It feels like I've been to many places, at different times. Such a strong impression from what I've saw. 1) People are born and die, but things are preserved, and after many years they tell us a lot of interesting things about people, their traditions, culture. For example: the ritual costume of the inhabitants of Papua. You look at this and mentally you are transported to those places, to those times. And you can clearly see: people lived in conditions in which a modern European will not able to exist even two days. But they not only lived, but they also passed on beautiful culture, art, traditions from older generations to younger ones. 2) In addition to art objects, the museum has a lot of household items: beautiful old kerosene lamps, a wall clock with the inscription Batavia on the dial, elegant carved furniture that has survived several generations of people. And how to describe the old houses that were dismantled, brought from other islands, and installed here? Graceful carved walls, partitions between rooms. Now you don't see that anymore. How much they could tell us about the people who lived here, worked here, passed on their experience from generation to generation. An old barn for storing rice. Growing and harvesting is already a feat. But the harvest must also be preserved. And this is not the 21st century. These are the old times, when there was no question of any climate control, no thermostatic polymers, desinsection and deratization. To a modern person, this task would seem impossible. But here it is, the barn. It stands for many years and shows us: a person can to make everything. The old screw press tells us the same thing. 3) But the strongest impression was made by the well-groomedness of this huge museum. Hectare area. More than seven thousand rare exhibits. Everywhere - perfect cleanliness and order. Hectare... Try tidying up a ten meter room, and then multiply that by a thousand. (a thousand rooms or a thousand people). Daily. And you will understand that in addition to the complexity of this organizational task, it still requires great resourses. I am still shocked and delighted at the same time. Dear Mr. Hadi Sunyoto, and Mr. Agustinus Prayitno, many thanks to you and all your team for your work, for your dedication to this important purpose. Good luck to you all! Sincerely, Leonid Matveev.

They have a beautiful & extensive collection of masks and Puppets, distributed in 7 houses on the premises. Each mask/puppet has a sign with a explanation of the character and in which tale/folklore it is used (in indonesian and english). The entry is free with donation and I definitely recommend visiting it. Also bring some time with you, since there is a lot to see (unfortunately, I got there a bit late and only got to see a fraction of their collection before they closed).

This place is amazing because it’s in the middle of nowhere and far away from tourists. I was its only visitor today and I even got to take a nap overlooking the rice terraces. The masks are amazing. I’m so glad it’s so quiet and peaceful there. Clean grounds, toilets/facilities to use. I did not eat at the cafe, but totally worth visiting!

This place is amazing!!!!!!! See all those exclamation marks? It doesn't seem that many people know about this place but it is a must see. The collection of masks and puppets is unparalleled and even includes some items from around the world. (Nothing from Canada yet but I think we convinced them to add something 😆) This museum is free which makes it even more incredible aaand we had a private guided tour which made it even more worthwhile. I highly, highly recommend making this a stop on any trip to Ubud!

It is a great museum in a peaceful location. There's a huge collection of various ceremonial masks, puppets from Indonesia, and different parts of the world, such as Mexico, Bolivia, Korea, Japan, and China, and there's no entry fee. If you want to get more familiar with the local culture and history, this museum is one of the perfect spots. Huge thanks to the Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets for their efforts to preserve these art pieces.

Very good museum of rare masks and wayang (shadowmpuppets). Display in a couple of joglo houses as the museum building which stand on a wide balinese garden. The guide was very informative. It is a recommended place to visit. The opening hours should be longer.

I really enjoyed walking through this museum. Wasn’t really sure what to expect. Nice old bali style places with some interesting and beautiful displays. Would have been great to have a tour guide or a recording bringing to life the history etc. You could read more about the displays but would take ages to do all of it. Nice outing and is also Free.

Really extraordinary collection of masks and puppets, mostly from Bali and Java but with two galleries with impressive items from Africa, Europe, and China and Japan. Well worth a detour. Don’t worry if it appears to be deserted when you arrive — you’ll find the galleries down the slope from the parking lot, in a series of houses, and there’s no entrance fee. The lights are motion controlled, so they’ll turn on as you go in. Suggest leaving about two hours if you want to look around thoroughly.

What a wonderful treat! We found this place by accident but we were Pleased when we found it. It was a free experience, something that’s pretty rare on the Bali Island. There was a wonderful tour guide who took us around and showed us all the masks and puppets there over 5700 puppets and over 1000 masks which is incredible, I think it’s one of the largest collection of profits in the world the grounds are incredibly beautiful and well kept. And the entire collection is immaculate and impeccably sourced maintained and styled. Every piece has a description in English and in the local language as well as Dutch. I definitely recommend visiting this place

Located on a 1,5 acre land. All you see is greens while approaching the areas. No ticket needed, just donation box available on the way out. Starting as a private collector, the owner then change it to make them available for public viewing. There are six joglos available for the viewing at the moment, so make sure you have around an hour to spare here. Each joglos has different theme, you get to see different masks from locals n foreign, 3d dolls, puppet string dollls from various countries. My favourite one was the carving on skin puppet doll from China, crafted so beautifully. The manager would greet n accompany you while explaining stuffs inside each joglo, he can help taking pictures too. Overall a nice insight n new experience.

def one of the better museums in Bali. small and no frills but a really unique, quality collection of masks. the grounds/setting is an old family compound and e buildings are very well maintained and the entire atmosphere is incredibly peaceful and serene. half the joy was just being in such a well maintained outdoor space. unassuming guide can accompany you for your “free” (museum has no admission fee but encourages donations; 50k per person seems reasonable). you can get very close to masks, puppets and displays. a bit out of the way but worth it; this part of Ubud is nice too. Great for families or individuals if you wanna get some legit authentic Indonesia history that isn’t boring.

(Translated by Google) This is a private museum owned by individuals, but the quality of the collections surpasses that of the government. Those who have are collectors of puppets and masks, so here you can see a collection of typical Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Sumatran, Korean, Japanese, Chinese puppet masks, and even some collections from Europe. The puppets and masks are displayed in glass cabinets in several separate buildings according to the same theme of origin. Even though it is in Bali, the Joglo house is used, maybe because the owner is from Central Java. The joglo is also of various types and purchased directly from various places in Java, so you can also learn it. Outside the collection there are also performance venues, gift shops, parks, etc. (Original) Ini museum privat punya perorangan, tapi kualitas koleksinya ngalahin punyanya pemerintah.

The museum was wonderful! It has a large collection of masks and puppets mainly from the southeast Asia region, but some from other locations such as Africa and Europe. Its very well curated and set in a very beautiful garden with several buildings, each containing a collection of original masks and puppets hundreds of years old. I am not a museum guy but I really enjoyed this place. It is very peaceful and the masks were really intriguing to look at. Best part is that it's FREE! Considering in Bali they seem to charge you for anything you want to see this was a pleasant surprise. They had a donation box but was not forced at all. We did donate as we had a pleasant experience. Check this place out!
