This striking memorial commemorates the 10,000 men of the South African forces lost throughout the Great War. Delville Wood was chosen as the site for the memorial because it was here that the South African Brigade was all but destroyed in taking and holding Delville Wood during the battle of the Somme in 1916. In contrast to the hell of one hundred years ago, today it is a beautiful and calm spot. Amongst the trees behind the memorial and museum is the only tree to survive the fighting in 1916. Scattered about are the remains of old trenches and shell holes and we must not forget that not all of the dead were recovered after the fighting ended. There are surely men still interred in this halllowed ground. Opposite the entrance lies Delville Wood Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 5,500 men from the Commonwealth who fell during the fighting at Delville Wood and elsewhere during the Battle of the Somme.

South African government needs to do some work or let the Commonwealth War Graves Commission take over running the monument. We learned that there has not been a South African appointed administrator in two years and basically the French staff are operating on autopilot. They are locked out of the donation box that used be used directly for maintenance. There also appears to be damage to the roof of the museum building. T

Beautiful peaceful place. The museum very good, full of relevant information about the time. To many lost their lives, to many yet to be found, the land is hallowed ground. RIP 🙏

Coming from South Africa to see where so many of your own lost their lives and what they faced...there is no words. Such a well maintained site..one of the best in Europe. The story it tells and the feeling you get in this place...

Incredible place. Beautiful museum, the woods speak for itself. So calm now and the deer were calmly walking between the trees.

I didn't have time for anything other than a whistle stop here unfortunately as I was overtaken by other events but I read up on the events before visiting, which is why I still visited albeit briefly. Ferocious fighting went on in these woods, which is why this was chosen as the South African memorial site. Read up on it if you haven't already done so.

Well worth a visit if you find yourself in the area, even if you have no interest in the 1st World War. Beautifully kept museum and wood that’s so peaceful, harrowing to think what it was like back in 1916. The museum portrays the history of a modern South Africa and would make any other fellow South African proud.

Before visiting this museum, I knew very little about the involvement of South Africans in WWI. The museum was eye-opening, very detailed, and well kept. The images and stories preserved here moved me to tears. A must-visit if you are in the area and have even the slightest interest in World War I.

An absolute must visit for the history buff or the casual visitor to the Somme. Situated in the heart of Delville Wood at Longueval the walk down the avenue of oaks to memorial is stunning. The memorial and trails around the Delville Wood is very informative. To the memory of the fallen. Lest we forget ❤️ 🌹
