It is rare that a bar or restaurant lives up to so many good reviews but Café De Dokter really does. The owners are very welcoming and make you feel at home straight away. It is a small space but I see it as a positive, as like we did you will end up speaking to the people around you which adds to the atmosphere. There is a great selection of beers with a few specials on. We had a Lambic, a triple bock and Abbey beer which were all great and in the proper glasses. There are bar snacks and although we didn't order any the cheese/meat board with extras looked great. Overall a great experience and easy to stay a few hours. A must visit when in Amsterdam.

6th generation bar owned by lovely couple, great drink selection with an intimate atmosphere that felt right out of the 1940s

This place couldn't possibly have more character. The dust has dust on it, but in the best way possible. When you're there, you think, "I must soak every amazing second up, and remember how wonderful it is." Classic jazz albums fill the air. The incredibly personable proprietor chats with his friends and you, if you like. The only food served here is cheese, so don't come here hungry, but do come. You won't regret it.

What a fantastic authentic jazz café! Super friendly service. It's a shame that other guests were so rude to eat McDonald's on your terrace, but it's great to see how elegantly you handled it. I will definitely come back with great pleasure.

The coolest space that I've seen in a while. This pub/bar is the definition of cozy and is well decorated with so many small trinkets on shelves and walls. The drinks are good, the menu is well designed and the owners/bartenders are very friendly.

Friendly staff, amazing couple running this place for 7 generations. Travelled more than 20 countries and different pubs and restaurants. This will always be one of the best in my list.

Very nice place with very good service. Place to go for a casual drink. You feel like a Harry Potterish ambiance there. Basic food plates (cheese or smoked sausage) that goes well either the drinks… I really liked it and it was not crowded by tourists. Mainly local crowd.

De Dokter is a historic café in Amsterdam, founded in 1798 by a surgeon from whom it takes its name, considered the smallest pub in the city.

My evening was ruined by the lady in charge. Nice place, however, the staff was rude. My son did not want to drink anything and they insisted we had to order for all as they pay high rent. I had to ask for the bill, as nobody appeared for the whole time we spent at table outside.

can’t give anything less than one star alas, but anyways- went there with my family and denied a drink, lady in charge told us everyone had to order because of “high rent”. is high rent my problem? absolutely not. someone here said they serve ice by hand, i ate it all.. waiting for a stomach-ache any second now. definitely do not recommend if you want your evening to stay chill.

Gezellig little bar serving up excellent G&T's. The house whiskey and jenever are both nice inexpensive options, and of course the beer selection is also good. For bar snacks, the cheese is served in a generous portion with some pickles, pickled onions, and mustard. It has friendly staff and a very nice ambiance to the space. The bill comes hand written on a prescription paper which is a very nice touch - a modern POS would look alien in this place. Stop by for a tipple and a taste of old Amsterdam.

Pretty good place prices are a bit higher than they should be. But friendly people and enough to drink

I read somewhere that it’s 18 sq.m. hall, it definately feels more room - I would say 30 sq.m.! Could be challenging for well-build visitors or anybody who feels unconfortable for spontanios touches (lol). Anyway, love the moody/gloomy vibe and atmosphere!

Super cute old bar. If you can squeeze in there, the beers are great and the atmosphere is cozy. I Enjoy coming here on a week night after all the crowds have disappeared from what is normally a tourist area. Staff is friendly, the beers are cold and with a good friend this spot is ideal.

👍 A cozy restaurant with a view. I liked those Avocado chips very much. Comparatively budget friendly in central Amsterdam. (More ideal for a coffee date.) They are providing white bread with steak. . . PS: Don’t forget to reserve a table and visit the restaurant.
