The Film Museum is recognizable from afar by its idiosyncratic architecture. A ferry takes visitors with a quick trip from Amsterdam Centraal. The individual areas of the museum are not clearly signposted, but the friendly team helps visitors find their way around. The permanent exhibition "What is Film?" is rather uncluttered: a few cameras from different periods, a bit of general film history, and some digital interaction options, most of which were unfortunately defective during my visit. I particularly missed information on Dutch film, such as the film museums in Berlin and Frankfurt show for German film. More sophisticated, however, are the temporary exhibitions and the cinema program in Eye. Movie tickets mus be purchased separately. Info on these can be found on the website and social media. There is a lot of film-related stuff in the store. The restaurant offers a nice view over the harbor. Ambience: 5 stars Price-performance ratio: 4 stars Visitor guidance / usability: 3 stars Didactics / knowledge transfer: 3 stars Recommended length of visit: One to two hours Fun factor: 4 stars Revisit factor: 3 stars

A really beautiful building to visit. The film museum is very interesting with some great activities to complete regarding film making. The exhibits are well presented with good information provided on each one in Dutch and English. There are several film screens to enjoy different movies. There is also an exhibition space and cafe. The views looking back towards centrall station are great.

Cool museum, they have a cinema and also different exhibitions. The exhibitions are so cool and also they have a big screen and a very comfortable chairs to lay down. oops I fall asleep! The movie was interesting, but the chairs were so comfy! They also have interactive games and we bought a flip book done by ourselves.

A wonderful film museum with different exhibitions taking place. I loved every minute of it and would highly recommend taking the ferry across to visit it. The ferry is free and leave about every 10 minutes, the time spent on the ferry in total is approximately 6 minutes. Enjoy yourself!

The eye museum is spread across 3 floors, the ground floor is the permanent museum which is interactive and tells the history of film making. Even though it's in a small space, very neatly setup to do lot of fun stuff like flip book making, making our own green screen film, watching a movie of our choice from the list, based on the theme you have a hall with screens that can play famous scenes in those films. There is a collection film rolls of different times / types, all at one place. The ground floor has lockers, cafeteria and souvenir shop. The first floor has temporary exhibition of films where you see the film through directors eye. Lastly you have many theaters where you can book and watch the films like any other theater. The entrance is free with museum card. The waterbus takes you free across the river from Amsterdam central station. Overall a good one time visit

We loved the experience here! The restaurant offers very good food, plus the ambience is so refreshing and relaxing! Enjoy the free boat ride to and from the Central Station. You can also visit other areas of the Eye Film museum for free!

We came here for the flip book and we were not disappointed. It came out great and was not too busy. Use the free ferry to get to the eye museum which is by the river. Exhibitions were interesting and creepy but good if you like film and intrigued.

Paying entrance fee and visiting the museum might not be worth it for everyone but seeing it from the outside is definitely incredible! Also, you go inside to the photoshoot cabin where you can make yourself a photo book. It will make many pictures which are then assembled into a book. You can then get it from the checkout near the entrance. It costs only €5 and is very cool. Moreover, the museum is located right next to the river and its architecture is breathtaking! Definitely come see it and grab a photo book.

We came to the free exhibit on the history of cinema, and it was excellent. There are many special exhibits that operate on their own or are interactive, and it is not about "just" looking at pictures or videos. It is obvious that a lot of thought (and money) has been invested here, and it is highly recommended to come for a short visit

Eye museum is visual treat for eyes! From the history of filmmaking to quizzes and making your own films in the goofy setups it has all! The exhibition was quite nice and I immensely enjoyed it. Overall layout and presentation makes the experience wholesome.

Went there with some high expectations (building is impressive isn’t it). I think museum is definitely worth a visit if you are into the history of cinema. But for a tourist it is definitely not amongst the must-visits. Permanent collection was okay, but temporary collection was quite weak. View from the bar is impressive.

Very interesting and beautiful museum, although not very large. In fact, when I visited, the permanent exhibition was quite short, although full of history, with the possibility of watching old films in the booth, seeing some old cinema objects and playing a few games. The descriptions were clear and to the point. As for the temporary exhibition, it took up a lot of space, with numerous film extracts and interviews shown on several screens in different rooms. The big plus of this venue is its location and the view over the center of Amsterdam. Food and drink are available in a convivial space. The store sells a wide range of cinema-related items, including classic films. A must if you're in Amsterdam for several days and coming to the north.

I visited here in 2013.Nice place with food, bars, cinemas, restaurants.I came through by boat journey from other end. Superb environment inside the museum. I find first couples cinemas as 2 people can together watch separately the film, which i find fantastic idea. View from the museum is superb when we look out as the river we can see. Definitely visit here if you visit Amsterdam. Flim museum is another level what i seen. Overall nice experience. Climate also perfect when i visited in December month.

What a wonderful place if you love movies, a must visit and reall accessible by the free ferry from yhe central sataion. We arrived on the day and were able to pay at the desk. Everything you would like to know about movies past and present, a self guided tour so you can take your time and really soak everything in, when your finished you can visit the cafe/bar/restaurant overlooking the River and then pay a visit to the gift shop on the way out where there's a great selection on old movie memorabilia.

Definitely a place to visit in Amsterdam if you're into movies and cinema. The exhibition held there is rather bizarre but super interesting at the same time, showing different artists work and historic aspects of Australia during the 20th century. The permanent exhibition "Panorama" displays different types of cameras and the development of the film media.

Loved learning about the history of film, there were little booths where you can watch films and do quizzes which were so fun. The building is a stunning architectural build. You can get the free ferry here from Central station. Also recommend buying the flip book which is an adorable souvenir :)

Magnificent experience.... the beauty and modern design of the building, outdoors and indoors, gives an excellent atmosphere that brings the cinematic experience to a higher level.. here not only can you watch independent good films, but also special screenings with the director's original format... great sound and comfortable seats... grand bar and outstanding view from their gigantic windows and terrace of the Ij and Amsterdam... good prices and nice offers too for the movies...

The cafe is great, nice views, comfortable seating, wifi, power outlets. It gets quite busy during lunch time. I used my museum pass to check out the exhibitions. The permanent exhibition is tiny, not worth visiting in my opinion. The temporary exhibition wasn't interesting to me either. I'm glad I didn't pay to visit. I would only recommend visiting the museum if there's a temporary exhibition that really interests you!

Such a intriguing place to take in a film! The restaurant is very unique and has beautiful views out onto the water. There are museum exhibits and a souvenir shop, as well as several screens where you can take in all manner of artsy, independent movies.

This is another one of those places that visitors to Amsterdam should go to. There are so many interesting and interactive elements to keep you entertained. A free ferry across the river and stunning view of the city if you want to venture next door to the Adam.

Big movie theater, good movie choices. The concept of restaurant/museum/collection/theater is really nice. The views are amazing, easy to get to it taking the ferry. Amazing staff also. The museum is really really small (15 min long) , I think the film topic is so vast but they don’t talk about it enough. If they make it bigger and include more topics they could increase the museum popularity. If you go make sure to complement it with other activities

(Translated by Google) Went to the exhibition of Ryoji Ikeda. Interactive art where sound and images are used, with sine tones, noise and other frequencies, an abstract image is created. Very impressive to experience and to hear his story behind it. The museum itself is super accessible and easy to reach from Central Station. The architect of the museum has certainly done a good job, it is a beautiful museum. (Original) Naar de expositie geweest van Ryoji Ikeda. Not really my cup of tea, a little too "artsy and pretentious" for my taste atleast. (If you like that sort of thing then good for you) Because I was expecting something more lets say "cool and fun filmhistory stuff about the netherlands". Atleast the museumsshop had a really cool vibe.

Spectacular film center with world class architecture, nice screens and regular film-related exhibitions. It also has a well appointed café-restaurant with views of Amsterdam over the river. Worth a visit if you're around even if you're not going to watch a movie.

The architecture of the building is incredible, but not just its sleek white angular exterior you see from the Amsterdam train station. Inside the building there's an incredible atrium with views of the city, and a solid cafe/bar. The exhibitions and cinemas are also really solid. It's a great afternoon stay in Amsterdam. (Photo doesn't do it justice)

Fun, engaging, and interactive experience at the special museum which we visited free of charge. The various projector technologies were interesting to explore, though brief. While the museum shop could benefit from more variety, it was decent. The cafe restaurant has impressive architecture and views, but the service was not the best.

Expensive entrance fee for what is inside the museum. During my visit I went down to the history of film which is always there and is the most interesting part of the museum then the other room was just full of screens with videos and that was it so very disappointing :( but the exhibition changes so i was just unlucky. However, enjoyed the history of film as there’s a fair bit to do and you can make your own green screen film for free which is sent to your email :)

Very beautiful museum and high quality place for good movies, I’ve seen Drawing lots there which was amazing. Only issue de resume of the film was written in English and i lacked of understanding and thought the subtitles would be in english and the film in flamish, unfortunately but funnily the whole film was in flamish, my two flamish friends enjoyed it a lot as I did even tho i missed some part of the plot and since we were a bit swinged by coffee shop activity before it sounded all too good. There’s one reason why i take out a star, because there was only one toilet next to the salle 4 and some guy decided to stay in for 20 min i almost pissed myself. There were toilets in the other levels but it was too urgent. Anyway i recommend

Located in a beautifully designed building, there are several interesting exhibitions related to the history of film and Dutch cinema. It is decently priced, and the main exhibitions took about two hours to complete. They also offer films to watch with varying showtimes if you want to stay for a feature-length presentation. If you have small bags, there are free lockers available on the premises, and if you want to grab a bite there is a roomy eating area complete with a staffed bar.

  • 5/5 Sam D. 4 years ago on Google
I didnt particularly look into what the museum was showing, but when I went in I was taken back by Francis Alys' work. A multitude of screens showing different children's games across the globe. The films were short glimpses into the lives of children with the same defining factors, one of them being - Smiles

(Translated by Google) Lunch was very good, except for the coffee - machine badly adjusted, how difficult it is - and all kinds of fine corona measures, but waiting staff do not keep 1.5 meters but half a meter away. That is only when you walk to the bar to ask if someone can take the order (because, as with many catering establishments in Amsterdam, people are mainly busy with themselves or with colleagues). It is bizarre that waiters in an environment that is stiff with the corona measures stand next to you and take your order half a meter away. And it remains special that most catering owners in the Netherlands do not try / fail to offer their Guests quick and friendly attention (And a quality cup). Stop with that tinkering in the catering industry, that nonchalance. Try showing that you are happy that people spend their money with you. Have a goal, focus and owners: send it on.

Pleasent day out but wouldn't say you 'need to go'. Saw the Chantal Akerman exhibition it was nice enough, would recommend for a rainy day, which is when we went! Panorama section was fun and interesting again good for a rainy day, would highly recommend getting a museumkaart.

You'd think they would be experts at making sure projections are correct. Sadly, the sound was too quiet and the letterboxing was just not right. Still a great place though.
