Worst hostel I've ever been to. It is supposed to be for people that stay there for a long time, and they charge you very expensive prices for absolutely everything you might need. They do not have a kitchen. If you ask them to heat up your own food in their cafe, they can't do it. I asked for a glass of hot water to make a tea with my own tea bag, and they told me they had to charge me that as a tea (€ 2,80). The laundry costs €5,50 (wash, dry and soap). Also when you arrive they will charge you 3 euros per each night for the city tax and another big amount for the tourist tax. If you have a problem, each person in the reception will give you a different answer. They don't know anything. I tried my best to put up with all these but every time something new happens. I regret I came here, and I would recommend you to go anywhere else but here.

Truly an awful experience staying here. I urge, no BEG, you to take your money elsewhere. I’m convinced that all the positive reviews are bots. First of all, it is an expensive hostel that will end up charging you more per night than what is initially stated. Half, if not more, of the amenities that were offered on the website were either closed or out of service during my stay. The staff is very unfriendly and unwelcoming too. Most of them had an attitude every time I would ask a question. The place charges for EVERY SINGLE tiny little thing. It is quite far away from the central part of town too so don’t expect to be close to any restaurants or shops. The park that surrounds it is nice, but you are better off visiting it in your own time. Nothing special about staying next to it. Lastly, the room was not clean when I arrived in it! There was dust all around the room and I’m hardly convinced that the bedding was even washed. I got athletes foot from using the shower in my room with bare feet (I am willing to take part of the blame for this), but it makes me believe the shower wasn’t even touched in terms of cleaning. I very badly wish I could leave 0 stars. Go elsewhere

Rooms were nice and was reasonably priced for our stay, unfortunately this was overshadowed by the fact that items were stolen from the room. Normally I would put this down to the risks of staying in a hostel, however we booked a full room between 4 friends so the only other people who had access to the room was the cleaners and other members of staff. So please ensure you lock your things away even if you are sharing a room with friends or alternatively book somewhere else!

Disappointing Response to Security Incident I regret to share a disheartening experience during my recent stay (21-24 September 2023) at Hostel Generator Amsterdam. My friend and I encountered a distressing situation where our room was unlawfully entered, resulting in the theft of valuable items, including money, camera bags, sunglasses, jewelry, and personal belongings. What added to the dismay was the nonchalant attitude displayed by the hotel staff when we reported the incident. Despite the severity of the situation, the hostel was unwilling to review security cameras or cooperate with the police effectively. Instead of taking immediate action, they requested us to initiate contact, leading to unnecessary delays in addressing the issue. By the time the police were involved, we had already left the premises, further complicating the investigation. Furthermore, our attempts to seek resolution through email proved futile, as the hostel failed to respond adequately. It is disconcerting that a matter of such gravity was met with indifference, leaving us with a profound sense of disappointment. While the offer of a free breakfast was extended, it felt like an inadequate response to the emotional distress and material loss we experienced. It is essential for establishments to prioritize guest safety and security, and the hostel's handling of this incident raises serious concerns about their commitment to these fundamental aspects. I hope this review serves as constructive feedback for the hostel to reevaluate its security protocols and enhance its responsiveness to such unfortunate situations. Future guests deserve an environment where their safety is a top priority, and it is my sincere hope that the hotel takes proactive measures to address these issues promptly.

The prices are reasonable but the photos didn’t accurate show our room. We had different room that we paid and (instead of de luxe room, standard twin room) and when we told this to the hotel staff we heard that no one before us complained about it and that there is no difference between these rooms. That was a bummer. Apart of it hotel is quite nice, good location, the breakfast was good (although waiting time was almost an hour). Normally I would give more stars but the situation with the room was really not pleasant and I think that it should be resolved otherwise

We booked 4-beds private room for 2 days on the weekend. To start with positivity, the staff working in this hostel were very friendly. Besides the staff, nothing can be recommended in this hostel. As called itself a ''hostel', we were expecting a common kitchen area where we can get some warm water to make tea, or an microwave... Nothing. This hostel does not have an area which doesn't cost extra money. We spend nearly 400 Euros ONLY for private beds, the facilities here worse than budget hotel, and worse than most of hostels. We asked the bar kitchen for warm water, the bar staff was asking us to pay 1 Euro. We needed to pay for the lockers. The private room offers nothing but only beds. We are not expecting 3-star hotel, but at least please act like a hostel. Nothing to recommend, overrated place.

Cons: primarily the false advertising from their website: 'And the old library? Yeah, now it's your secret hideout for kicking back or throwing down private events.' Wrong, this room is completely closed off to guests and only available for special events. Thus I show up expecting a quiet area to work remotely and I am scrambling to find any decent working space. The auditorium was also closed off for private lectures/classes but did open up to hostel guests later in my stay but also has a ping pong table and not as secluded from the lobby, music, etc. I stayed in the 6-bed dorm and it was the most cramped hostel accommodation I've ever experienced. A tiny room with en suite, so the shower & bathroom were just feet away from the 6 beds so everyone can hear everyone's business and every move. Not enough room between the bunk beds for 2 people to be in the drawers at the same time. Awful. Pros: everything was clean and modern, good condition. Good beds and pillows. Staff were fairly nice. The breakfast every morning was a very good value, along with rest of the menu at the Cafe.

Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun place to stay when traveling with friends! It's my second time there and I had a great time again. The breakfasts is great and they rooms are really fun. I've never tried the shared bedrooms so i can't say much about that but that system seems well thought out as well

The Generator is a hostel in a great area of Amsterdam. The positives are the restaurant staff are very friendly, the room is quite nice and it's very safe. On the downside however there are many faults. The rooms are quite loud and offer little to no sound resistance. If someone opens their door it will shake your room, if someone leaves the floor and opens that door you will hear a massive bang and your room will shake again. There was commonly stomping from the room above at late hours, shaking the room, and shouting as-well. Finally there was a shouting bit between the patrons of another room and what I believe was security at 2 in the morning which lasted half an hour. In addition front staff are on the side of the generation business rather than helping the individual, making it feel very impersonal. Regarding the food, the staff where nice and the food was very subpar for the price. You get rubbery pre-made eggs in the morning, there are not options for sides with dinner, the dinner menu is really small and practically consists of just burgers and pizza for mains. I was really hoping there would be more vegetarian options but I was sadly mistaken. The price for the stay here is definitely overpriced and there are much better options out there. I wouldn't recommend a stay here, not due to the mostly friendly staff, but due to the lack of respect this company has towards its guests and there stay in this great city.

Nice hostel that is kept extremely clean and tidy. The cafe/bar area is nice, the staff friendly, and the decor all pretty cool. Criticisms would be that ensuite bathrooms are not my favourite (because of the awkwardness of having to be super quiet all the time and feeling awkward using them), and the in room storage boxes are not very big and are again, a bit awkward to use because they're under the bed and noisy to pull out. Normal lockers would be preferable in my opinion. All in all though, a very nice hostel.

I like the vibe of the hostel and the staff were also good. However, I did not like that basic amenities like shampoo, soap, lockers were missing. Also the room was not cleaned daily. Overall for a budget stay this is not too bad but can improve. Thanks

It's in a perfect location, very close to the tram line, in the middle of a large and beautiful park. There are many social areas and activities. You can also find delicious food and coffee at reasonable prices in the cafe. An excellent experience in every sense. I will definitely go again :)

Hostel isn't too bad at all, overall I had a pretty good stay and would recommend. However, the biggest let down is the lack of kitchen and nowhere to store food. They say "we do have a cafe/restaurant and bar at each property, so you're never left hungry." But the Cafe doesn't have the broadest options if you're looking for something healthy or that fits your diet. They also try to squeeze money out of you, make you pay for towels, pay for holding your luggage if you check in and check out and high rent a bike prices

Booked a room for 3 months through an intermediary. Paid the deposit, but the hostel booked someone else in our room after the first month. Our last 5 days were entirely spent on finding a long-term accommodation. Waiting to see how it will end up

Overall, I enjoyed my stay (6-bed mixed dorm). The room was cold and too small for six people to move. It was difficult to use the bathroom or shower without waking people up. The option of a late check-out (7€) saved my day. The locker room for rental was very convenient to use after checkout. The location is quite okay. 15-20 minutes to the center by public transportation. I loved that there are couches in corridors, which was comfortable considering the smallness of the rooms. Bonus: They have the best hair dryer I've ever used...

Helpful, friendly staff. Interesting and interior! Clean too. Options for female only dorm rooms, which feels great for safety. Also locker options for personal belongings. Very reasonable price. Right out from a beautiful park. Power plug right in your own bunk bed area, useful. Food is expensive here so i recommend eating elsewhere.

We enjoyed our stay at Generator although the sheet is not super clean but bearable. It is located in a park so it’s convenient to have a morning/evening walk. Not too far away from the centre and there are lots of trams (street car) to take you there. I like the view from our room. Breakfast cost $9.5 and have okay selection.

Pretty nice and affordable place. Nice that there is self check-in and check-out. Hotel is placed in gorgeous park. There is a lot to do - karaoke, game evenings, etc. we didn’t use any but it looked cool. Rooms were pretty small and a bit outdated, but that’s alright considering the price. Important - there is no shampoo! So bring your own! Overall nice experience and it was nice to stay in less touristy area, as it was more quiet, but at the same tame close to city center, approximately 20 min walk.

Really good place to stay just 5 mins outside the main part of Amsterdam. The check in was smooth, staff happy to help. Rooms were basic but clean and tidy and just what was needed. The area was nice and quiet but the place had a good atmosphere and at night time and had a club downstairs. You couldn’t hear it from your room.

I had a great experience in the hotel. So friendly stuff, clean room and bathroom. With our deluxe king bed towels were also provided, which i was not expecting. Breakfast was absolutely delicious with a wide range of food to choose from. Fantastic view from our window! The athmosphere was very relaxed. I am amazed at how wonderfully and fluently staff speak English.

Good Location, small but clean rooms and I like how the sink, shower and toilet are all separate to accommodate more than one person. Nice sunrise view if you’re on the upper floors and facing the park direction.

Rooms are small but incredibly clean, so are the bathrooms. The location is great, the area is incredibly safe and very close to the city center with good restaurants and bars nearby. The cafe has good food for good prices. Haven't tried other facilities but i'm sure they are good too. Overall the best hostel you could stay in for the price.

One of the BEST in Amsterdam. Stayed in the dorms, and they were super clean. The cafe, the sitting area everything was awesome. Not very central as you have to take the Tram, but still way better then all the hostels in the centre.

Great hostel for a short stay in Amsterdam. The location is quite good, the building is beautifully designed/decorated, the staff is wonderful, and the cafe is awesome for getting work done while enjoying some good food and coffee. The rooms could use more amenities, but the place is clean, and overall, a great option for a quick getaway.

Beware of money theft. We came with my partner for a week. I took some cash with me in a transparent envelope (200 euros) which I put in my suitcase in my room (private room for 2 people). Wednesday morning, we set off to visit the city. We asked at reception if the housework had been done, so that we could hide the money if necessary. The receptionist said no, the cleaning is done every 4 days, and we arrived the day before, so there was no cleaning that day. So I didn't hide my money. When we got back in the evening, we realized that the room had been cleaned (bed made up, towels and toilet paper changed). I checked my suitcase and found 70 euros missing. I went to complain to reception, and the first person there seemed to be used to this kind of complaint. She went straight to the manager, but he told me that these things happen, that it was like losing an object or a suitcase in the lobby. But no, it's a private room, and no one was supposed to enter it. He himself confirmed that the theft must have been caused by a member of housekeeping staff, as no one else had access to the room. All we got was a written report in their file, with no follow-up, saying they were going to check the cameras. Nothing was done. I was not offered a refund or any other solution. It's hard to spend a week in peace knowing that there are thefts in our absence, in our locked room. So be careful with your belongings in the hotel, as there is theft by the cleaning staff. I recommend another inn

We stay here for 4 days and we like our room, a nice view from the park. It's accessible to public transport, I love the ambience, nice painting of every corner, very artistic😍🫰, we rent a bike for 24H it cost like 20 euro and with 50 euro deposits It's worth it..but the sad part is it's raining the whole time, we tried to manage to roam around with the rented bike. The buffet is satisfying with a lot's of options. There are a lot of activities they can offer but we didn't try it all..hehe..

Location is great, it's not on downtown so it's nice and quiet and close to everywhere. Staff is nice and willing to help. Only cons would be that everything is more expensive in the hostel that outside, rent a bike somewhere else or get a food outside would be my recommendation. Other than that is ok! They charge 6 euros per towel but you can get fresh ones everyday.

  • 4/5 Amanda V. 7 months ago on Google
Clean, comfortable room and nice facility overall. Very quiet. Loved having the beautiful park right out the front door. Note that there is no kitchen option for guests to prepare or store food.

  • 2/5 Anna Lena K. 4 months ago on Google
The private rooms are good and clean, location is also good. BUT people usually choose hostels to save money. However, when we arrived there, we noticed that they want money for every thing you could imagine - hot water, leaving luggage in the luggage room and checking in or out just a bit earlier/later. After all this, a stay in a proper hotel would have been less costly. I do not reccomend to stay here!

  • 1/5 Philipp 4 months ago on Google
Sadly I cannot recommend the Generator Capsules/Pods. It looks great on pictures but is completely uncomfortable. For that price you are far better off in a normal hotel room. The Bed is just a „Topper“ so you can always feel the floor unless you are a child. The Light in the room is always on, and light seeps through the cracks of the Pod, so you always have light when you want to sleep. You want to get up and go to the toilet? No problem: 1. Open the jaggy door from your pod and wake everybody up because you always have to slam it so it closes. 2: walk 30 meters to the PUBLIC Toilet (Yes all the Teens from the whole hostel can go there) 3: Make your business and try not to die from the horrendous smell in there. 4: Walk all the way back… Same goes for showering(be aware you only get 1!!! Towel for the day and you have to change it yourself and pay 6€). All that for 80€ a night…

  • 5/5 Emma S. 4 months ago on Google
Spent two nights here as a solo female traveller from the UK. I felt very safe during my stay. I stayed in one of the pods, which I loved. It offered me privacy but without having to pay for a private room. The hostel used to be a university and one of the lecture halls is still used as a place for guests to hang out, which was interesting. The bathroom and toilets were spotless. The staff were all very helpful. As some other guests have said, the hostel is a little bit out of the way from the centre of Amsterdam, but it's easily accessible by tram, which stops just a short walk from the hostel and only takes about 10-15 minutes. I visited the city centre and the Van Gogh museum easily by tram from the hostel. It cost me €15 for an unlimited 2 day tram pass. The trams to the centre are fairly regular as well. Personally I liked not being right in the city centre but it depends on what you're looking to get out of your trip. If you are going to Amsterdam to get drunk and smoke then it's probably going to be out the way for you. Restaurant on site. I had burger and chips in the restaurant which was delicious. I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely stay again when I visit Amsterdam.

We (3 persons) stayed for 1 night and had booked a so called Private 4 bed Deluxe Room. In total it cost almost 500 euros so I expected something good. I asked at the lobby about parking options and they sent me to a Q-Park 10 minutes walking even though it turned out that parking on the street was free until 9 am. When we got in our room it turned out that we had to make our own beds. Not what I expected with a deluxe room, but ok. But my duvet cover was dirty (the others were clean). When I sat on the bed I could clearly feel the wooden planks under the mattress. Fortunately I didn't notice it much when lying on it. The bathroom didn't have a working holder for the toilet roll. There also wasn't a single cup for rinsing your mouth or taking medicines. I cannot comment much about the shower as we didn't have a towel at all. It turned out that we could get a towel at the lobby if we paid 6 euros for it (each!). For almost 500 euros a night I expect valet service, or else at least that breakfast is included and that your bed is made for you and at the very least that towels are included! Needless to say: this was not worth the money we paid.

*** SCAM IRRESPONSIBLE HOSTEL. NEVER BOOK DIRECTLY*** My inquiry has been ignored since 9th Sep ( 20 days ago ) The problem is that they should have refunded the amount twice since they also charged my credit card twice. So far I only received it once. My initial booking was not refundable. Since I couldn’t use the wifi I needed for work the receptionist AGREED to cancel my booking and also refund the fees. I got a confirmation about the refund via Mews Merchant. The refund i received was for the cancellation, the second refund for the accidental or rather intentionally double charge has not been done yet.

Cozy hostel right next to Oosterpark in Amsterdam! The cafe had amazing food and drinks. Rooms were very clean and maintained. Toilets and showers were also very clean. Perfect location, nice and cozy rooms, friendly staff and very clean. I stayed in this place for almost a month and they asked to clean our room everyday. The only thing I didn’t like in this place was “fixed windows” in our room. In fact, the quality of air was pretty bad and we had a lot of mold. But considering the location, I would reserve it again.

Great experience overall. I stayed in a room that I shared with 3 other guys, which was very clean and beautiful. There were paintings all around it and the beds were very comfortable. The staff was very kind and helpful too! One of the things i enjoyed as well was the canteen. I got to meet new people there and played some ping pong games. Its very reasonable for the price it has. The only thing I would recommend is avoiding the walks around the Ooster park during the night. Or at least, not alone. There are a few crackheads around there.

++ Good check in and check out Air conditioning good Inside a park Bus & tram within 500 meters Very clean & big trunks to store - - Unfortunately windows can’t open in rooms, it smells very bad when you sleep with 3 other people in the same room. And AC is not enough. Can’t eat with own food at the tables inside, at the « bar ». Room’s inside lock doesn’t work. Staff enters when they want & with lock not functioning.

We ate at their restaurant yesterday, the snacks were great but I would rethink the burgers, they were very disappointing. But Pascal made sure we enjoyed our stay anyways, unfortunately a taller girl behind the bar was quite stressed and screaming names, which was quite unpleasant for me sitting in the restaurant.

Stayed here for 3 nights with friends and had a very pleasant time. Staff was 10/10 along with the food. Really fun bar atmosphere with good cocktails. Sebastian and Zach were very helpful! My favorite part is the beautiful park right outside. Chill vibes all around🤩

Well-run operation, no issues with cleanliness or staff. The park setting is great, just a shame there are no shops nearby. No social vibes. Functional for a group visit, would stay again.

At first I wanted to give 2 stars because I wasn't able to sleep properly there and had to leave earlier. But hey, all the rest was ok actually, I want to give credit to the hostel's food that was excellent, to the quality of service, and overall the good cleanliness. So basically, it's the kind of large party hostel that is noisy 24/7 (A.C. and rolling lockers don't help), cramped with groups of people coming or going at any hour, often under the influence of rather famous plants. The hostel has strange policies like no external food allowed, which can result in long waiting times at the hostel's restaurant. So, the place is not bad in its category, but come here only if you are into this atmosphere and follow the vibes of the place, it's not a suitable place for remote workers travelling on a budget.

Housekeeping threw my shoes and toiletries out while cleaning the room, multiple staff followed up without anyone taking accountability. Housekeeping blaming front of house, front of house blaming housekeeping. In the end nothing was done and I was left footing the bill for all the items I’ve had to replace. Good facilities but the whole operation feels inhuman, the computer systems in place override common sense and hinder staffs ability to help when things go wrong. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone looking for a unique travel experience.

We stayed for two nights in a dorm. It was good beds, clean space and good option for privacy. The hostel has a lot of cool features. The bar is well stocked and a nice place to relax. The AC was much appreciated! The shelf in the shower room needed fixing and the grouts had mould. Could use a bit of detail work. I was missing an option for scraping water away from the floor in the shower room.

Loved it! Rooms were very clean and really nice. Staff was great and helpful. It is a little outside the city and a little far away from the major attractions, but there are trains and light rails near by that take you everywhere very quickly. Best hostel I’ve stayed in!

it‘s really close to the city! you can reach it by tram within 10min :) it‘s near a park which is also nice the staff is really sweet and so were my roommates. Clean Room, felt very very comfortable. Would always come back again!!

We booked a private room; it was so incredibly small, 2 paces one way and 4 paces the other. It felt as though we were in a jail cell, with no window facing out so there wasn’t even fresh air. The bed was smaller than a full, we had trouble sleeping. Go elsewhere!

Amazing location and great staff. I was going to give four stars because it seems like they don't do the maintenance for the driers and washing machines, but I decided to give five stars because of the amazing employee named Camilo. Camilo helped me so much through my stay and always welcomed me with a friendly and warm smile. He always tried his best to help me with whatever question I approached him with. Besides that, they should really check the condition of the driers and the washing machines. After a 60-minute medium-temperature drying program, my clothes were almost as wet as I put them in.

Giving the three stars mainly for the rooms. They are so small, it was hard to move around when everyone was in there. Also felt they were pretty dirty and could be cleaned better. Also being on the third bunk and having to put on your own sheets is very difficult. Staff was all nice. Cafe was nice though! Great banana caramel muffins.

Very nice hostel. Location is a little away from the main centre but we knew that when booking. Surrounded by a lovely park and our room have a great view of It. Cafe had nice food throughout the day and staff were all friendly. Would definitely stay again.

Booked a garden view private room. It was clean, nice and with an amazing view. Not a lot of toiletries, no kettle, no coffee/tea. You should only expect the bare minimum : one small towel per person, a bathroom carpet, and a hand-wash that you're supposed to use for hands, body and hair ! Anyway, the room was really nice but expensive. The hotel in itself is busy and works like a classic hostel. Workers are very nice !

😐 It is a large, somewhat impersonal, completely unshaded and extremely noisy campsite (we were in the tented section).Noisy because there is a large multi-lane bridge nearby, which is still very busy at night. Also noisy because of the "cigarette smokers". There are no rules and regulations - or if t...
