A quiet area from the hustle and bustle. At the time our small group had to pass security to get in and tour the area. Parts of this are residential, for what we told are some of nuns in the community. Unsure if it is true. Please respect the grounds and dont be too loud. It is a peaceful quiet area in the middle of Amsterdam.

Interesting piece of history. Beautiful church. Not sure of any entrance fees as we were there as part of a river cruise walking tour.

It was such a beautiful place. You could make so cool and nice looking pictures and it wasn’t too growded. If you’re near this place go there and even if you need to walk there a couple of minutes it is worth it.

The Begijhof is a oasis of peace in the chaotic center of Amsterdam. It is a garden surrounded by a beautiful set of charming Dutch houses. The perfect place to sit for a bit while exploring the city. You can also visit a small chapel there and light a candle. Silence is always required, so the atmosphere is very peaceful. Make sure to not disturb the residents who might be seating if front of their houses and do not trespass the private areas.

Known as the oldest “hofjes” in Amsterdam, it’s composed by a group of houses built around a courtyard and garden which provided modest homes for the Beguines. Begijnhof is quoted in guidebooks and there is the possibility to find a large number of visitors that coming through. It's a quiet oasis in the centre of the city, located near Spui. It's a peaceful place to spend some time. To me, Begijnhof is one of the places of the heart of Amsterdam. Remember that silence is requested. Free entrance.

Definitely worth visiting, very cosy and quiet place hiden in the city Centre. English style buildings and green perfectly trimmed lawn. Old church and the oldest Amsterdam's house also impressive.

This is a nice historic courtyard with residential buildings, green and a Church. The 2 entrances are quite hidden which is probably a good thing, as it would get really busy with us tourists. The main residential area is gated off for their privacy but tourist can walk between the small entrances, which lead back out onto the main roads surrounding it.

Nice spot to get some rest and relax from the busy streets around. Grab some sandwiches from a local store nearby and enjoy this nice spot. But please respect that it’s a home for those living there. Respect the gates and take your litter with you.

Amsterdam was crowded the day we were there. Lots of people and bikes. This spot is quite peaceful and has an interesting history. Be sure to check out the church and chapel. Also note the house with exposed wood work as an excellent example of early building techniques

The history of this part of Amsterdam goes back to centuries ago where a group of Catholic women settled in this area, which was a secluded section of the city as their faith was not tolerated by the Protestant Church in the city. The area has been renovated, and you can access it free of charge.

Beautiful place with historic significance. Worth seeing. Because people are living there all tourists are asked to be silent. Old houses (renovated obviously) and old chapel are stunning. An oasis of quietness and peace in the city centre is priceless.

Peaceful, inner courtyard, with a Chapel and church inside. Free but look carefully for the door or the side entrance. Helps understand part of Amsterdam's history.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful, curious and quiet place that was formerly a religious community composed only of women. I was surprised by the hidden access it has to the interior garden, where there are multiple and typical Dutch houses. Contrast the bustle of the outside street with the tranquility when accessing this site! 😍 (Original) Un bonito, curioso y tranquilo lugar que fue antiguamente una comunidad religiosa compuesta únicamente por mujeres. The Begijnhof was founded during the Middle Age. The ancient, restored wooden house is one of the two wooden houses still existing in Amsterdam. After Protestant takeover of 1578, the Begijnhof was the only Roman Catholic institution to be allowed to remain in existence. Today there are two churches, the Catholic Houten Huys and the English Reformed Church. It's not the individual buildings that are interesting, but the atmosphere of the place. The secret Catholic church is spectacular. Amsterdam's oldest house is in very good condition, although one wonders how fire-prone a city like this must have been when fires were burning everywhere and all the houses were made of wood. (A fire caused the decision in to make the houses in Amsterdam) Today there is no Beguine living on the estate. The last, "Sister Antonia", whose original name was Agatha Kaptein, died on 23 May 1971 at her age of 84.

Beautiful place to visit, but the tourists that were there when we visited were so disrespectful and were not respecting the signs calling for silence for visitors. I’m surprised they don’t enforce it but also saddened that visitors can’t respect the wishes of the community there.

Begijnhof is a small hidden courtyard right in the middle of Amsterdam's city centre. I had never heard or seen thks place before but is a great opportunity to step out of the busy streets and witness a little History. The story behind the courtyard is fascinating and it's just a neat and quite place to discover for free in Amsterdam.

A nice place to visit in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. Well preserved piece of Amsterdam history. The church was open to the public so had a wander round and visited the little shop. It is a residential area and so parts of it are restricted access... It is very peaceful and calm... Read up on it before you come here and ten sit quietly and appreciate its beauty

One of my favorite places in Amsterdam, a little gem right in the center but protected from the hustle of the city ! Peaceful and a bit out of time… The 2 guys that work here were also so nice, they let me in even though they were about to obviously close the gates and were so funny ! One of them even took the time to come up explain the history of the begijnof. Let’s hope this place will remain preserved!

One of my favorite parts about Amsterdam was that getting lost in the city means discovering things you didn’t have on your map. This is one of those places. It was awesome to find a quiet spot filled with so much history behind it. And the architecture leaves you in awe.

It's a very peaceful place with a garden surrounded by characteristic Amsterdam buildings. The entrance is through a gateway from the street and there is no fee. While you are walking in the crowded street nearby, you can find yourself in a silent and calm place just passing through the gateway to here.

(Translated by Google) Amsterdam is a city full of freshness. Above all, it is found in its gardens, such as those of the Begijnhof, a Beguine convent. A cheerful, modern, almost carefree city, it exhibits a joie de vivre both in the parks and in those gardens of which I speak. The city is equally famous for its canals and its interior gardens. Flowers, especially tulips, are the passion of the Americans. The article, on my travel blog at elisanievas (.) I visited this place as a part of a walking tour. The courtyard is clean and beautiful and once you're in the complex, you'll feel a sense of calmness. I believe that it includes Amsterdam's oldest surviving house dating back from the early 1400s (please, correct me if I'm wrong). It's interesting that the waiting list to live in this area is so long. Thanks to the single women residents, for letting us visit your home.

No tickets are required. It is a complex of old houses around an inner Hoff or green area. Access to most parts are only limited to the inhabitants of the complex. It has its own chapel that on special occasions people join the service. I suppose not much to see here. If you are tight on your schedule, you might skip this place unless you are so into contemporary history.

Interesting place, but a bit too low in energy for my taste. Beautiful in some angles though. I love to find beautiful hidden places.

In the midst of tourist-swamped Amsterdam, this serene oasis of quiet serenety is the starkest possible contrast. With centuries old houses in typical Amsterdam style and an ancient anglican church, this "hof" with its tiny (religious) community has kept its identity of modesty and virtue amidst the sex shops and tourist traps. Please respect the silence and quietness when you visit to preserve this gem.

A beautiful hidden church with a pretty garden. Make sure to respect the area by keeping the volume down or be quiet. Well worth a visit!

Pretty location with a church you can take a look around. Short time limit on visits.

Nice and peaceful little square away from the pulsing city center. Interesting assembly of tipical Dutch houses. On a winter misty early morning, the place releases a magical atmosphere.

Fantastic old place in the middle of Amsterdam, it is private owned so you can just stop there and look around for a while and you must go away, but you will have at least a peace time for a while.. I love the places like this...

REALLY quiet and tranquil place. Loved it even though it is in crowded part of the city.

Nice and quiet place in crowdy Amsterdam. Some paths are only for locals. The Begijnhof is one of the oldest hofjes in Amsterdam, Netherlands. A group of historic buildings, mostly private dwellings, centre on it. As the name suggests, it was originally a béguinage. Today it is also the site of two churches, the Catholic Houten Huys and the English Reformed Church
