It is a fantastic museum and a fine example of maritime heritage preservation. I suggest this museum on a rainy day as it's mostly indoors and takes several hours. The outdoor ship is great to explore and gives a glimpse of life back then. The indoor exhibits are detailed, well-kept, and informative. I especially like the 'curiosity' section. You can get a free audio guide. The building itself is cool to explore, and there is a nice cafe, locker, and toilets. If I remember entry, it was around 10 euros.

Maritime Museum is one of the best museums I have ever visited in my life ! That big ship 🛳 is overwhelming and I really enjoyed the interior space in the ship. It is not crowded at all and you can imagine how it was at the time at every space. I visited alone but it is still good for group people or family visit. I wish I can visit again 😎

Nice museum in Amsterdam central. It's a kids friendly museum with free entrance to museum card. A 15min walk from central. The main attraction is the ship on back side. You can get on and explore all the parts. Definitely recommend if you are curious about dutch maritime history.

We spent a very pleasant afternoon in the Maritime museum. The displays were good, the cafe nice but the best bit was wandering the replica large trading ship. You can access most spaces on the ship and get a feel for the size quarters and conditions. Well worth a visit.

I attended a candlelit Concert in this beautiful museum. Its stunning from walking along the river in the late evening sun and after the sun went down. The concert was amazing in no small part the the atmosphere and this stunning venue.

Lots of history. It takes us back in time. If you love history, then a must visit place. Its divided into 3 sections and I loved walking through the Amsterdam ship. I even left a note in the ship on how it reminded me of my history classes during my school. Must visit place. I saw kids were having so much fun in this museum which I never witnessed in any other museums.

The advantage: no need booking and not busy. It’s a nice museum, but not really for young kids. My kids 6&8 didn’t find enough things to explore or play/interactive with. They did enjoy it, but for a short while.

The Maritime Museum has amazing art and history of the Dutch navy. The old naval storehouse is a nice touch. But the museum is not kids proof as advertised. It lacks fun, interactive, and convenient features for children and families. Good for adults who love art and history. 3 stars.

Great collection of paintings, weapons, and other artifacts. Audiotour was very good and easy to use. The ship is very kid friendly. Would be great for groups. Cafe is also very reasonably.

Beautiful experience. Very interesting. The ship outside Is very funny in particolar for young people. In the last floor there was a beautiful exposition on the food that i really appreciated. The Museum Is a bit confusing since some room are empty and sometimes Is difficult to understand the correct direction you have to take to enter in the "correct room". Very recommended!

(Translated by Google) Beautiful historic building with a beautiful modern glass roof over the courtyard. In the building, different floors from the cellars to the attics are accessible. And outside there is a VOC ship (full-size replica) behind the building, to visit as well.

Excellent place to learn about Dutch naval history, plenty of model ships, maps and everything in-between. The main attraction of course is the VOC replica ship, there are some parts of the ship which are so narrow and ceiling really low! Worth the visit!

Presented the history of the Dutch maritime. You can find here a classical museum, The Royal Barge and a replica of a sailing-ship too (the kids love it). Free to visit by Amsterdam City Card. 👍

This possibly turned into one of my favorite visits. So much history but told in an intriguing way and such a huge great collection. I personally loved the room of all the model boats, the ship outside and the tale of the whale, but everything was great. The audio tour was a nice addition as well but didn't seem to always work, got some great souvenirs here.

Much better than we thought. Includes very entertaining information about the sea, and all the stuff about it. You can learn all about the food, living, and hunting that old Dutch sailors did. Also note the great ship outside of the museum, it is very informative and is excellent for pictures.

Wonderful museum, very educational with a wide variety of exhibits. We particularly loved the replica VOC ship that they have. This museum also has wonderful amenities for disabled guests, everything is accessible via lift, they have accessible toilets and even on the replica ship it is possible to access one of the decks via lift. It's also got a lovely gift shop and cafe. We had a wonderful afternoon here.

The building and location of the museum are stunning. Architecturally wise I really enjoyed the museum, the inside court is beautiful with the dome. However the exhibitions are quite small, we visited maybe 4 small rooms that were very nice and interesting but not enough… the cost of the ticket is 17,5 EUR, I would have expect to see more rooms with far more information. It’s a pity and we were disappointed. You can visit the big ship outside which is one of the best part for me, however there was no audio for adults available. We had higher expectations for this museum, I would suggest checking website to see what is currently displayed and asking for directions to find the rooms size the building is huge a with many stair cases but the directions of the visits is not very well explained. Library and shop are very nice. I would recommend to get a discount card that includes this museum and visiting on a sunny day as they have a beautiful outside deck with long chairs to have a nice break after the visit.

Wonderful maritime museum. Everything creatively displayed and the replica full size ship is superb for children and adults alike. Watch your head! The Sea of Tranquility display is very surreal but so thought-provoking. Highly recommended. Could have spent all day there.

A really high class museum about a maritime history of the Netherlands in an old navy armory and reconstructed VOC ship. The in house exhibits seem very well funded and up to date. The ship is great fun for adults and kids a like.

I enjoyed this more than I expected. Nice overview of Amsterdam's Maritime history. Impressive art collection. The self-paced audio tour worked smoothly and gave a great summary of the highlights of each room. The building itself is very impressive and the hands-on tour of the full scale replica of an historic sailing vessel was the highlight. 2-3 hours to see and read almost everything. 1-2 to buzz thru and have the experience.

I was very positively surprised after reading some of the negative reviews. I think that big ship and vr experience alone are worth visiting the museum. Ofc the gallery and other exhibitions are very interesting as well but for me it was the ship that made this visit unforgettable

The Maritime Museum is very nice and educational, here you can learn about the history of Dutch shipping. There is a ship outside that you can board which is very impressive and there is also a show for the younger visitors. Below in the hold you can see what this ship was carrying and how the crew slept, you can lie down in a hammock for a while. You can also see the kitchen and captain's cabin and staterooms. Further in the museum you can see the king's gilded ship. And in other rooms there are displays of things she used on the ship or what she took with her. There is also a restaurant where you can order something to drink and eat and sit on the terrace inside or in the square. The building has elevators and there are toilets for the disabled. Location close to the parking lot, the center of Amsterdam as well as the main train station.

Amazing museum about the maritime history of the Netherlands. There is a old VOC ship replica which you can enter and look around. Additionally, this has a cool virtual reality experience. Outside there us also the King's boat which is beautifully decorated. Inside there is a large collection of painting about big events in the maritime history, as well as some painting from the Dutch golden age that have a relation with the Dutch maritime history. On different floors there are also new items, like a big painting of waves in black and white. As well as a section about navigational instruments, atlases/maps, and ship models. There is also a small section about homosexual people on cruise ships. This is a very diverse museum that I recommend visiting, we visited for 5 hours and could not see everything.

We went here because someone in our group loves ships, navy, and water. By the end we all loved this museum. What a pleasant experience the exceeded our expectations. The ship outside was a little challenging for the elderly person in our group because of the walking up and down the stairs. The rest of the museum was well done for handicap access. Very interesting looking at the maps, sextants, and ship decorations.

Among the most beautiful buildings in Amsterdam is certainly The National Maritime Museum, near the Nemo Museum. A beautiful ship is anchored in front of the museum. Just like the building itself, which is very beautiful, the ship is also a real work of art. During the time we were in Amsterdam, records for visitors to this museum were falling.

It was raining day and we spent 2 hours there. It’s worth it as it full of models and information. And it has full size copy of the old ship where you can explore all inside parts, up to the toilet of the captain. Amazon museum. A MUST if you're in Amsterdam. Also quite big, so make sure you have enough time to admire everything especially the ships outside!

Really big and interesting. The building it's also beautiful! They always have activities for kids and they enjoy visiting the ship! Also the "whales" exposition!

Great balance of hands-on learning for families and thoughtful, educational elements for adults. They handled controversial topics really well, sharing a variety of opinions and inviting guests to decide for themselves

After 5 years, we visited the museum again because it was that good the first time, so we wanted to repeat the experience. However, some of the exhibition rooms were closed this time. The accurate ship replica and the hands on experience makes the place one of the go to places while visiting Amsterdam.

To me, this was perhaps the most fascinating place in Amsterdam. There is a great wealth of collections of medieval to contemporary artifacts, paintings, replica of ships and documents to recount the history of Amsterdam as a port, the Dutch Republic as a naval and colonial power and evolution of the naval technologies over several centuries. The ticket includes audio tour. Expect 2~3 hours to be spent here.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing date there!! Definitely recommend for all ages. The installations are fun and eye catching but also interesting, we were able to learn so much about the dutch history. Our favourites were the room with the navigation tools and of course the replica boat.

A beautiful and interesting museum experience. The exhibits are well balanced between national maritime history and general world maritime history, including the dock which hosts some cool ships. Especially notable is the special nautical atmosphere created in part by the building itself and the well-done design. I recommend allocating 2-4 hours here.

Love this place... if you are a fan of nautical stuff plan at least 4... preferably 6 hours for the visit. Cool thing is that your ticket is valid for a whole day - they issue an entry bracelet and visitors can leave the museum to have some food and come back. Highly reccomend.

Fabulous place to visit in Amsterdam, quiet & calm away from the madding crowd. The "Amsterdam" ship , a replica of a cargo boat lost just off the English coast at Sussex in s storm is amazing. Very hands on experience for young & old alike. The Royal Barge preserved in all of its glory is spectacular, used for state visits & Royal occasions last used in 1962 for Silver Wedding Anniversary celebrations of the Dutch Royal Family. Lots of tales and some video footage of Whaling Ships are terrifying but informative. Exhibits of figureheads & Tapestries are stunning & spellbinding. A lovely day spent away from the midday sun.

My favourite museum in the Netherlands so far. Such a huge collection of fascinating stuff. The whale area is great for kids as well as playing in the boat. Full of history, engineering, science and politics

This is the most important museum in Amsterdam in my opinion. It tells you about what shaped the nation: ships, revolution, colonisation, trade. It has a replica of Amsterdam the ship to explore, several floors with paintings from THAT EXACT period (17 century), weapons and figurines, and so on. Audio guide in many languages, and for kids, too.

Awesome museum - even if you’re not all that into ships. History of Dutch East India Company was horrendous and this museum recognized and balanced that well. Same with the long noble history of whaling. Navigating by stars was complemented by navigating by satellites. Wonderful activities for kids that were safe and self explanatory - giving adults time to read and appreciate the wonderful displays. Not your typical museum at all. And then the excitement for all ages of exploring the replica tall ship - all four levels open to public. It was educational and interesting for everyone in our group Highly recommend

A special building which has been beautifully converted into a very interesting museum. Note that you need to provide photo ID to board the replica Clipper ship - this kept our family from viewing it as our teenager's ID was not accepted. We didn't encounter this requirement anywhere else.

Very nice museum. You get historical facts as well as can. Ave fun with the interactive things. The ship is probably not historical accurate but very cool to see how it maybe was and you get a good feeling that it was not that fun as movies want us to believe. Get there early, the museum fills up with people.

Amazing experience for adults or children. Super interesting stories, great temporary exhibitons and the chance to see the royal boat and visit the real replica of the Amsterdam boat which sank a long time ago in Texel. I can’t recommend more :)

Very interesting experience, building is amazing by itself. The large replica ship is fully accessible and many interesting artworks inside. Definitely worth a visit.

Interesting museum with some fun interactive elements and I learned quite a bit about Dutch history. And to their credit, they are pretty transparent and upfront about the brutality of the Dutch East India Company, the West India Company, and the Dutch colonial legacy generally. But there are few if any stories or information from the point of view of cultures/peoples harmed by that legacy, so it ends up feeling more like a footnote, reminiscent of the phrase, “One death is a tragedy, a thousand is a statistic.” I would love to see them handle this better.

We stopped here as a planned excursion at the end of our river cruise. This place exceeded my expectations. Climbing in and around the restored ship was interesting and fun! Don't miss "The Tale of the Whale", which while partially designed for kids, had lots of great information for adults. Both my wife and I were glad we bent over and went into the mouth of the whale to see a model of a whale's beating heart. The old film about whaling brought back many memories from reading Moby Dick. Definitely worth seeing if you have the time.

I had a great time there. It consist of real model ship which you can enter and enjoy having a great view of the city as well as the small models which are perfectly made with woods. Moreover, it has a part related to the food trade via the sea which can be a bit hurful for some to see the actual image. Another part which was really interesting for me was the dutch history of map making. There was a section about the whale hunting. Intriguing but sad. Review of a adventurer staying solo in the sea for quite long time as well as a funny interview with two gay people working and living as a ship crew And many others. It was very children-friendly I have to add. If you have a 3 year old or older. This is a good place to go.
