Fascinating to see what to what lengths mankind is willing to go in order to inflict pain upon each other. One can wonder, in the light of current events, how much more civilized we actually are. More subtle, maybe, but probably more devious too...

I'm not sure why this place has such low score reviews but my experience was positive, you can see from the outside that the place is evidently small and I don't know what else you could expect more that see torture devices. Tickets are relatively cheap and I will keep them on my list when I visit Amsterdam again, if you want to see the real Iron Maiden they have it.

I thought it was gonna be so much more fun. Instead you only get to see some torture machines and methods and read a bunch of info about them. Wouldn’t recommend it.

I went here with friends, and paid 10 euros per ticket at the door. It was a good museum, with various devices on display. The informational plaques offer explanations in various languages. We spent 30-40 minutes here, which makes it a quite expensive museum, but it's Amsterdam so I am not too disappointed by it, but it is good to keep it in mind.

The items in the museum are cool, but it is very small/short for the price. If you need something to kill time and done mind spending a few bucks, it's cool.

It was too quick of a tour. It was a little too dark inside to read the texts. A very narrow staircase leads to the downstairs without a rail but to rely on the walls to prevent from losing balance.

My visit to the Torture Museum was an eye-opening and thought-provoking experience. The museum does an excellent job of presenting a dark and unsettling aspect of history, shedding light on the methods used to inflict pain and suffering in the past. The exhibits are meticulously curated, providing detailed information about various torture techniques, their historical context, and the societal norms that allowed such practices to exist. However, it's important to note that this museum might not be suitable for everyone, as the subject matter can be disturbing. It's advisable to consider your own sensitivities before visiting. In summary, the Torture Museum offers a unique opportunity to reflect on a dark chapter in human history. The educational value and the dedication to presenting this difficult topic make it a worthwhile visit for those interested in understanding the complexities of the past.

A short but sweet museum about the torture devices of the Middle Ages. The items on display were impressive to see in real life and were given context by text. However, it wasn't always perfectly clear which text belonged to which device. That being said, the atmosphere really tied in with the seriousness and creepiness of it all. Very interesting!

Amazing 😳 Some of the devices here are recreations, some real original torture artefacts. All are displayed with early renderings from books, etc, and descriptions of how and why they were used. It certainly makes you feel lucky we live in the 21st century! A short trip threw winding corridors reveals some of the nastiest things humans have ever made. A must see!

I don't know what I expected going here...... but I left feeling sad that people could do this to each other. The devices weren't in great condition anymore and the facilities weren't really great..... but it definitely gets the point across. 5 stars. Would definitely not recommend!

Interesting history of torture which exists to our times .. what is great that it's small and you won't need more than 45 mins to read and go through each part of art

Nothing to special, as you walk in you see lit signs with images of tortured people with some of the torture devices around. There is a 1st floor with creaky old wooden floors you navigate around corners reading and looking at what's around on the walls. Then you walk down narrow stairs to the basement to see more torture devices and more reading, while walking around be careful not to bump into some of the devices. As you reach the end you go up the last narrow staircase to see the last two big torture devices and then you exit through the waiting area at the front desk. Would have been interesting to have something for the viewers to pretend being torchered with would haveade the experience a little better

It's a bit hot and stuffy inside the museum, there's no music playing so it's weirdly quiet. The exhibits are mostly non-interactive, but it's still interesting and a bit horrifying (which for this kind of museum is a good thing!) I wouldn't go again, especially since it was a bit expensive (around 14 euro I think) but still interesting.

I have a lot more photos but don't want to ruin it for people wanting to visit. It's a short walk round but very interesting. There's a sketch of how they think the instrument of torture would have been used as well as an explanation to it's name and history. The only thing I will say is it is very dimly lit in there (on purpose) so if you're visually impaired you would need to take a friend or use a torch. We booked our tickets online but you can buy tickets at the front desk.

Excellent food here. They really do their meats very well. My friends and I tried their ribs, steak and ham. All very well cooked. Ribs were not too sweet, soft and tender. Steak was well seared and perfectly medium rare. Ham was so tender I technically didn’t even need a knife. Maybe one thing to note is the narrow spiralling staircase where every one has to carefully manoeuvre around especially the waiters and waitresses. That’s the only safety issue there.

Read the reviews and you’ll know what you get. It’s a 30 min experience for 7.5€ pp. Interesting but not overwhelming. Take the time to read the signs, otherwise it won’t give anything

Look, only go in if you can stomach this sort of thing. It's a worthy exhibit and makes you realise thank goodness we are no longer in those days where torture is ok. 5/5, but will never go again.

Lot of different torture's methods shown with a few text explaining why torture was used. Not all the device were explained so a bit surprising but overall a nice short 30min visit for 7.5 euros.

Very bad. There's some good installations but there is absolutely no explanation of what you see, just items placed on the room. Except for some of them where they just explain the name of the instrument and the history, in a very bad translated text. Not worth it, done in 7 minutes

The interior decoration I liked a lot, it gives you creepy vibes. What I didn't like was that there was no proper description of how the instruments were used back then. Sometimes I didn't even know about what instrument the description was talking about. It was still worth going for me, but I would have loved a little more explanaition and details.

Fun little museum with signs to read in English. The lighting made it tough to get good pictures, but the darkness with spider webs made the museum spooky, which added to the creepy factor of the torture devices.

The museum is in the center of Amsterdam & tickets can be purchased in the day. Looks small but once inside quite big. Lots of information about Amsterdam and different kinds of torture practices. it’s obviously a dark topic but very interesting. You can find written information displayed in 4 different languages. I can definitely recommend this museum to everyone interested. Staff have been very welcoming and they offer a student option on request. I would have liked an audio option with additional information or maybe someone who takes groups through the museum.

I visited the torture museum late last week during a group holiday to Amsterdam. This was one of the places we were most excited to visit as we do have a bit of a morbid curiosity in the darker aspects of history and such. I'm sorry to say that it is difficult to express how truly disappointed I was at the museum. Entry for me and a friend was not too bad €7ish as we could get the student price. We expected a decent sized museum that delved into the history of torture. Yet we managed to compete the whole thing in around 7 minutes and that was with us stopping to properly look at each piece and read the few bits of text scattered around the place. The great thing about specialised museums is that they allow the curators to really delve into the topic but here it feels like they just wanted to smash together a few things and call it a day. I'd maybe be more forgiving if the prices were lower €4-5 maybe but that would be at a push. I would suggest giving this place a miss if you are visiting, unless you have a few Euro left that you would like to get rid of. I would also like to add that the staff member we spoke to at the start did seem very friendly and polite which is always a positive regardless of how the actual visit goes.

I had an absolutely fascinating and informative experience at the Torture Museum in Amsterdam. The museum provides a unique insight into the history of torture throughout different periods and cultures. The exhibits were well-curated, and the displays were both educational and thought-provoking. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, offering additional explanations when needed. The museum managed to strike a perfect balance between preserving the historical significance of the artifacts and providing a respectful and engaging atmosphere for visitors. If you have an interest in history or simply want to learn more about the darker aspects of our past, I highly recommend visiting this museum!

Great little museum and worth the price. It's an easy time filler and full of information about medieval torture devices. Very few people inside but I can imagine it will be busier in the summer.

Interesting to read up on the different torture devices used in medieval times. Lighting was a bit too dim. Price wasn’t worth. Would recommend if youre looking for a quick museum to go to. (I was done in 15 mins)

If you are interested in the history of punishment this is the place to see those devices and get a brief on how and why they were used. The tour takes about an hour of you read everything. Its a short walk from the red light district and well worth the detour.

It's a quick visit to objects and paintings used for torture in ancient times. Some pictures on the wall with brief descriptions are not very informative. Anyway, it was worth the visit and another museum crossed off the list ✔️

Interesting. This tiny, "charming" museum has a dark vibe. It was nice to take a break from city walking and just pop in and get some historical and honestly horrible facts. Not very expensive. We payed 7€ pr ticket. The guy in the ticket booth was a bit "uninspiring", but whatever. Overall: not a fantastic experience, but not terrible either. Just fine.

When it's rainy outside and you have nothing else to do you can go here. We paid 7,50 Eur per Person and spent approximately 30 minutes here. If you read every sign you can spent more time here. It's designed like a dungeon. Walking through this museum made us appreciate our peaceful and civilized times even more. How any human could do the things you see there (mostly because of religion) to another human is beyond us.

It s a good pass by museum. If you will be in the area it is worth visit...if you will not...you will not lose anything special. Most of the info are already known.

An interesting museum. The exhibits are very simple but hide a much deeper story of the men who thought they were saving people's souls by driving or the devil. The rules that the executioner needed to follow were surprisingly elaborate a and not as barbaric as I thought it was. There were extremely specific goals and hard lines that were not to be crossed based on the suspicion or crime. Worth seeing. We hired a guide and it was worth it if only to uncover the details of the everyday life of the punished and interrogated and their punishers and interrogators. Okay for kids with the right discussion before, during, and after - and for the right kids.

Very cool and unique experience! Take your time and read the plaques or listen to the guided tour to get the most out of it. Definitely a worthwhile attraction for 1.5hrs or your time.. the micro art is really cool too!

It was expensive for how short it was…. And some images or torture methods had very vague descriptions. Sometimes I just couldn’t figure out what they were used for. However the design was nice and it was well taken care of!

  • 3/5 Dan B. 1 year ago on Google
Not as large as I was expecting, takes maybe half an hour to an hour to look through. Pretty unique experience with descriptions of each torture device is a variety of languages.

Amazing experience. The people there are literally actors, starting from their roles, to their makeup and costumes, to their accents and everything about it. Every room had something to offer and it blows my mind to see what lengths some people went back then as a form of punishment. I have to say that they showed us how despicable humans can be in a approachable, humorous manner.

  • 2/5 Forrest T. 1 year ago on Google
Disappointing; not worth it. The museum is small, and mostly consists of illustrations posted on the walls, with accompanying written explanations. There are some physical objects displayed as well... but they weren't enough. The written explanations on the wall were good, but I felt like browsing Wikipedia would have actually been a more informative (and certainly less expensive) alternative.

  • 4/5 Diba D. 1 year ago on Google
wish they'd had even more torture devices but was a great museum nonetheless!

  • 4/5 John H. 1 year ago on Google
Interesting exhibitions with some gruesome reading, could probably be experienced in 30-40 mins so quite expensive for what it is, but not bad for under a tenner.

  • 4/5 Victoria S. 1 year ago on Google
Quite interesting little museum. Smaller than expected but full of items, pictures and information. My teenage boys loved reading and seeing all the artefacts. It while away a good hour

  • 4/5 Pickle R. 1 year ago on Google
Quite an eye opening experience. Enjoyable and horrendous all at the same time, it certainly makes you thankful you're just viewing it rather than enduring it during more barbaric times. It's 1 of the cheaper things to do in Amsterdam as well to tick off your list of things to do and see, also for the sake of 30-60mins it doesn't take away from anything else you have planned. I would recommend taking the tour as there is also some nice bars and restaurants nearby.
