A truly magnificent museum showcasing the rich history of the city. There are numerous exhibits to see but The Golden Coach exhibition stands out. What a magnificent coach it is, currently shrouded in controversy as one of the doors depicts a portrait of the Dutch (white) colonial masters surrounded by black and Indonesian/Javanese slaves. Absolutely a must-see exhibition. Highly recommended!

This is not the Amsterdam Museum. The museum is closed for renovation for a couple of years. It’s an exhibit that is offered during the renovation. We went hoping to learn about city history. This exhibit doesn’t tell you the history of the city but rather assumes that you already know it and aims to give you a different perspective on it. I wish it was explained to us before we bought our tickets. Some parts of the exhibit may not be appropriate for younger children.

This museum is called Amsterdam Museum but you learn nothing about the history of the city. I was expecting learning about the canals, how the city became what it is now, etc. But nothing! Also it’s quite small and it’s mostly paintings or objects. I don’t recommend visiting it. Thankfully it was free with the I Amsterdam card. But for the price it’s too expensive. You should visit Museum of the Canals instead where you will learn more about the history of the city. This isn’t worth it!

A phenomenal experience where the museum has taken history to the next level. They showcase the very pompous and mainstream history of Amsterdam that you would expect - but parallell to this, they have also dug deeper into the more unknown parts of Amsterdam history. This way of depicting history is brilliant. It simply tells you that history is written by the wealthy and winning and is not generally accurate, by methods of questioning and critical thinking you learn to ask yourself what part of any history is truly accurate. Well worth a visit!

Very enjoyable visit. Very historical and I love the video displays. The Golden Carriage was okay, but didn't spark much for me. I simply enjoyed riding the bike through 1927. That was a treat. Wished there was more interactive content, but still a worthwhile visit.

The Amsterdam museum has 3 main themes:1 dedicated to the overall history of the city / country, 1 to the opression made in colonies and 1 to minorities. After the visit you'll probably know more of the oppression performed by netherland than its great history.

Through a wonderfully curated exhibition, visitors understand the history of the city through different periods that are accompanied by top of the notch amazingly beautiful pieces. One of those museums that leaves you a great memory of makes it a favorite. Accompanied by the Heritage Amsterdam museum in the same premises, makes it an experience that you can’t miss when visiting Amsterdam.

Nice museum about the history of the city of Amsterdam. The building of the museum is the same as the Hermitage of Amsterdam. There is a large amount of art from the last five centuries of Amsterdam and the important things that happened in the city. There seem to be several temporary exhibitions on the second floor, there was an exhibition about the slavery on the Dutch colonies shown with dolls. Also there is an exhibition about fabrics. The museum accepts museumcard. Lastly, the museum is not very touristic and some tourists might not appreachiate the museum.

Visited their temporary location attached to the Hermitage and it had some really interesting exhibits combining the history of Amsterdam and modern Amsterdam and it's people. It was really well curated and really enjoyed the tour of the exhibit. Highly reccommended

Excellent, really enjoyed it. We went on Sunday and it was €15 euro per adult with a free audio guide. Took headphones to plug in and off we went. Really cool and modern exhibition. Learning about Amsterdams history was really interesting, enjoyed learning about the origins of a city that is forward thinking and open minded and how that has endured through Amsterdam’s culture. They don’t take cash anymore, from Jan 2020, you have to pay by card. Ask for €1 coin at the counter to put your stuff in the lockers, they lend you the coin that you give back at the end.

Nothing to see at this museum and you pay more than the Louvre..... It's really small and there is truly nothing interesting or worth it. If you want to see real art and painters go to the Rijksmuseum.

Good museum to discover some aspects of Amsterdam’s history, city development and current topics. The building is beautiful, by the Amstel river, with a great court yard. However, it was a bit underwhelming in terms of the historical exhibitions. Nothing about the founding of the city for instance.

It’s not the favourite! Overrated I would say, the conflict and war exhibit that was at the museum was what I enjoyed the most. There were some interesting paintings and statues. The museum doesn’t have a clear theme to follow.

The Amsterdam Museum is a smart organized space. Here you can see antique and modern art. A nice addition is seasonal exhibition. I was lucky to learn more about Julius Caesar. Very cool cafe and master classes for children are excellent. Great place for a pleasant weekend.

Several collections to visit and know more about Amsterdam history and art. A lot of knowledge and information on Amsterdam diversity history. A culture accepting all kind of people and faith is amazing. Audio guides available. A coffee shop also available. Kindly museum personnel.

The temporary location of this museum while the original location is being renovated. It's not worth your money if you pay full price. Nice to walk around if you have a Museumkaart. The collection is very eclectic which doesn't help for a nice visit. If you're only briefly in Amsterdam, don't waste your time on this museum.

The Civic Guard Gallery passage with the Samson and Goliath statue from the 1600s had some nice paintings. The Amsterdam Museum itself has a good audio guide and easy to follow displays on the history of Amsterdam, including videos about the pilings, displays of different drugs including actual paraphernalia, and great paintings.

Interesting museum and definately worth a visit to get an understanding of the history of The Netherlands and Amsterdam. €15 entry per adult includes the audio tour. Great option if it's raining or cold outside. To find the museum, walk through the wonky arch and follow the path straight, with the cafe on your right. After the next arch the entrance is on the left

Lovely and surprising museum, with a lot of information about the formation and history of the city of Amsterdam. Set up is a bit confusing. Got lost at some points. Saw the Golden Coach in it's glass case in the court yard, wich has been fully restored and had to be air-lifted into the courtyard especially for the exhibition. Worth a visit! Advice: skip the cafe on the weekend, they are way too busy and do not have enough staff at the moment.

Amazing place to easily get lost with the amount of artifacts this museum houses. The layout is a little confusing and maze like but it kind of makes it fun to navigate every corridor and level. They do have maps which do a pretty decent job about explaining where everything is. I still had to backtrack quite a few locations just to get a second look at some of the stunning artifacts. The audio guide is extremely helpful and I thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the history of Amsterdam.

Underwhelming... They have a VAST collection of treasures in the depot (presented on a terribly outdated website) spanning the whole history of the city, but the focus of the presentation is on the golden age, city hall and a bit of colonial history. The 'modern' part about drugs and gay marriage... ugh this is so badly presented and obviously for tourists... How about some women with red lights as well? Or is the Schiffmacher monstrosity meant to fill this gap? There are so many objects they could use to visualise the different time periods of the city in a lighter and more playful manner, the design feels like you are in a dungeon. Time for an overhaul i think.

  • 5/5 i i. 5 years ago on Google
Great museum about the history of Amsterdam. As a tourist, one can learn alot about the city just from one visit. This museum is big and has quite a few exhibits. Easy access from a tram stop. Admission is included in I Amsterdam City Card.

  • 2/5 Nina T. 1 year ago on Google
If you have even the slightest idea about the history of the Netherlands, you’ll learn nothing new. No info on the actual story of Amsterdam. The audio guide together with the descriptions just keep repeating on how unequal the society was/is (which is no news). I don’t see how adding some actual facts would undermine the idea of showing a multi perspective view. Not worth the price. Two stars for the effort.

Went to see the exhibition in the Hermitage since this building is under renovation. The exhibition is not worth a euro. It does not tell anything about the Amsterdam history but rather nonsense statements full of hate. I would not waste my money or time on this... terrible!

This museum is a disappointment. Don't go, you will loose your time and 18€. The good grades must be for the museum before the move to the actual building. What a waste !!

  • 1/5 Konstantina S. 1 year ago on Google
What exactly is interesting in this museum ? Random items/paintings(seem like 3D printed) that don’t explain Amsterdam at all. Really big walls and paintings in the highest part of it. Paying that much for nothing… Disappointing!

  • 2/5 Luka T. 1 year ago on Google
Disappointing. One room of brief historic narratives, with somewhat random collection of objects presented over the walls. The whole order and space felt confusing. Side rooms had temporary exhibitions about modern life and events in Amsterdam. I wish I could have dived deeper into history of Amsterdam, but here you can just get an overview. Good if you're in a hurry.

  • 5/5 JS W. 1 year ago on Google
The main museum is being renovated, so we visited the Amsterdam Museum on the Amstel, which I'm assuming is a subset of the main museum. That said, the exhibit we saw, Panorama Amsterdam, was impressive. The art and artifacts were beautiful and fascinating, but even more impressive was the history, and stories, it told about the city. Very pleased we went, and really hope we can come back when the main museum is open again.

  • 2/5 Felix K. 11 months ago on Google
For me personally, it has to do less with the history of Amsterdam but more with culture and art. Thus, it was not what I expected. I would have loved to get to know more about the city and its history and not only a short summary of the different times in Amsterdam (1600, 1700, etc.). I would have wished for more details. Unfortunately, the museum was really not my preferred type of museum, which is why I only evaluate it with 2 stars.

Wonderful collection and thoughtfully curated museum with a high-quality audio tour. Core exhibit was really good and the side-exhibits were also, be sure not to miss them.

Very interesting museum with a helpful audio guide. Despite its temporary location in the Hermitage, the exhibits and history are well thought out and presented. Nice experimental part where the curators test ideas for the renewed museum.

Awesome experience and display of artifacts. Having lived more than 10 years in Amsterdam, there were many important historical facts and viewpoints that were completely new to us. And there was an interesting juxtaposition of the favorable history with the time periods where Amsterdam wasn't on the best side of history. Highly recommended as it offers a great balance of time spent vs things learned while not overburdening the visitor (of any age)

Informative experience, but I wanted more information about Amsterdam's history. I understand the site has moved due to renovations, so I wonder if not everything is on display? We also found it hard to find within the area, could be better signposted?

The Amsterdam Museum gives a brief and concise look at the history of the city through a timeline. It highlights the glory and achievements while still acknowledging the dark origins. It's a nice way to spend 1-2 hours, though not really if paying full price (thank God for museumkaart!)

Beautiful exhibitions in this temporary space. Mindfully tells so many interesting stories about the history of Amsterdam through multiple lenses. Very interesting! I really loved this.
