Stunning collection. I only wish that photos/videos were allowed so I could study and illustrate from the specimens. As others mentioned, don't go if you're uncomfortable with the macabre or morbid side of things. Definitely not for young children. Some say you can expect to spend around 2 hours there, but if you read everything I think you could spend half of a day! There are cards to read more information on the specimens, but they are difficult to match and sometimes are read in a different order. An audio-guide or plaques would assist in navigating the exhibit.

What an amazing experience! Totally worth the long metro ride! Make sure you exit the metro station on the correct side or you will end up walking through a housing project that is not very pleasant.

I was excited to visit this museum since I first heard of it. Specimens are fascinating and unique. They invoke a mix of emotions when you see them. But I would like to say that there should be small version of prospect/brochure that you can carry around with you so if you are interested more than just superficially you can easily see what each specimen represents. At the end of the visit you just return it at the front desk. Lovely ladies that work there found temporary solution for this yesterday but in a long term I think something should be changed. And it would be also useful to point out somewhere next to the price list on the page that it's a bit cold inside. All in all great museum. I am looking forward to read your book 📖

This museum is free but it’s part of a university. We went on a Tuesday. Don’t know if the school was closed that day but it was VERY HARD to get in the building. The only way in was far in the back and we followed a student inside because the door only opens with a scanned badge. IF you are able to get in the building to the museum, it’s a very interesting collection. It’s just a large room and you’re allowed to look around at your leisure. The school was very empty which explains why we had such a hard time getting inside but maybe we went on an ‘off’ day. No pictures are allowed FYI.

Absolutely amazing! A must-see experience for everyone. I don't agree with the title 'horror museum'. It is educational and important history captured. Pictures aren't allowed in the museum.

Fascinating and somewhat haunting (in a good way). Specimens are presented in really compelling ways, like showing the brain developing throughout gestation vs the adult brain and comparative anatomy with other species. I do wish they allowed photos of some areas (I appreciate the respect given to the dead, but it is also valuable to share knowledge). I also wish they had a catalog of what each item is (aside from just the Latin names on the labels). But overall one of the most interesting museums in the world really.

Intense experience. Very beautifully laid out, and extremely fascinating. No audio guide unfortunately but very informative posters. No photos due to respect of human remains.

This was an a truly incredible museum. Fascinating and educational. I’ve been to manny medical museums and this one is one of the more spectacular ones with a wide range of specimens.

A very large and impressive collection. The staff was super friendly as well. The museum does need more signs, as the place was quite hard to find. Will definitely recommend to others who are interested in the human body

I rode my bike here from Amsterdam Central, which took around 50 minutes. Extremely worth the visit, particularly for those in the medical field or just with an interest in anatomy or morbid fascination. Not for those with a weak stomach or who are squeamish. I spent over an hour looking at the specimens; there seemed to be cards with English on them, but I just used Google translate for words I couldn't figure out. No photos allowed, which probably makes sense so photos can't be spread without context or with misinformation.

Very interesting and sometimes shocking, so I wouldn‘t recommend to come here with little children. But definitely worth visiting if you are around the area. The museum is pretty small, so it won‘t take long (I was there for about one hour), and is therefore a good add on if you have seen the great museums in Amsterdam.

Very good value for money if you are interested in human medical specimens. Lots of information available and many displays fit into a small space. Certainly worth the visit if you have a passion for anatomy.

(Translated by Google) Fascinating and excellent! One of my best memories from Amsterdam. But still there is a lot of things to do with you. There is a lot of things going wrong with that. If you like anatomy, medical science, forensics or horror movies, you will like the place! Fascinating! Excellent! I loved :) I admit that this museum should be avoided for pregnant women because a large part is devoted to fetuses with deformities which can be shocking for a future mother. But if you like anatomy, medical or forensic science and horror movies, this museum is for you :) (Original) Fascinating and excellent ! One of my best memories from Amsterdam. But still need to say that if you are pregnant you might not want to go there ... There is a huge part with foetus born with abnormalities which can be hard to see for a future mom. Otherwise if you like anatomy, medical science, forensics or horror movies, you will like the place ! Fascinant ! Excellent !

This is a great museum to see the anomalies in human growth, especially in the womb. A very interesting medical collection within the academic hospital in the southeast borough of Amsterdam. Complete the day with a visit to Gaasperplas (beautiful and peaceful park with a small lake). That's a tip from me (a local).

Extremely fascinating, but definitely not a museum for a weak stomach! If you’re interested in learning more about the human body then this is the place to go, there are some incredible exhibits and displays to see! It’s located a good distance out of Amsterdam but it’s still very easy to get to on the metro or train.

Incredible collection of specimens, both of significant historical importance and of even greater scientific importance. As both students my wife and I visited this collection (on our honeymoon no less!) and we're greatly intrigued and educated by this experience. A must see for any student or researcher of a medical field.

**Just a note to other visitors: please can you behave in a respectful manner? The collection consists of (pieces of) dead people, often dead babies. I don't know why this apparently is funny to some people, but snickering, giggling, and laughing is inappropriate in every museum and especially so when the museum is filled with dead people. You wouldn't start laughing at a cemetery when you notice the grave of a newborn, right? So why not give the same respect to the dead people making up this museum collection? These people were someone's child, sibling, and sometimes someone's father or mother too.** The Vrolik museum is great! Very interesting collection and with information boards in Dutch and English at a level understandable to a lay person. They also have an area for reading and a small museum shop. Friendly staff, and the museum is easily accessible with public transport. Good value for money. Highly recommended to people interested in anatomy who can behave in a respectful manner. If you are looking for a fun day out having bants with your mates, this isn't the museum for you and you're better off looking for something to do in Amsterdam city centre. The only thing I think could be a nice addition is a screen showing a schematic representation of embryonic development. No audio but with on-screen text in Dutch and English.

I would say is one of the best museums I ever visited. It's fascinating. It's small but really interesting. The information cards are very informative and easy to understand. But it was really hard to find the way, should have some signs, I know it's not very touristic, but still.

The Vrolik Museum is a special kind of museum that is rarely found. If you are visiting with children, I strongly recommend that you discuss with them in advance what they will find here. The exhibition is not for the faint-hearted. There are explanatory cards in English and Dutch next to some of the exhibits. Taking photos is not allowed. I would highly recommend a visit.

  • 3/5 Fani K. 2 years ago on Google
Large collection but the museum could be much more organised and better designed, with lighting and signs next to the subjects. Also the fact that there is only one informative card in each section, makes the experience more difficult over all.

Tickets only 10€ so no need to purchase in advance :) It may not be for everyone, but if you do go, there is so much to learn! Wouldn't recommend for kids under 15 tho, especially if they don't have some general knowledge on fetuses and pregnancy as some of the specimens can be a lot to take in.

Vrolik Museum - The FRINGE museum ☠️💀🦴 Amazing collection of real life human and animal specimens. You can see human embryos, different types of twins (Siamese, thoracopagus, omphalothoracopagus), the lion-pet of Napoleon Bonaparte's brother, the bezoars stones mentioned in Harry potter books and livers deadly marked by the corset fashion. A kinda of creepy atmosphere BUT definitely a memorable experience. I congrat the Vrolik family , you have my respects. Also Mia the volunteer in the entrance was a living breathing encyclopedia, I absolutely adored her. Cute spot for reading in the back, total Harry potter - medieval vibes . 10/10 experience 💀💀☠️☠️ PS : I really wish they will add an audio guide of the museum in the future. Nevertheless, the black cards explain all the samples, which of course are numerated

Went here with another medically educated person, which makes it that much more fun. If you are curious or interested in physical anomaliesn or just how the body works, this is a nice place to go. Easy to reach by public transport, not expensive at all, and you can spend as little or as much time as you want here. The place is not too big, but has a great collection from all body parts, birth- and growthdefects, and even a section of animal skeletons. There are pamphlets that explain a little bit of what you are looking at, and if need be you can google some stuff. Pics and videos are not allowed here! I'd say it's extra fun to bring someone who has some medical knowledge, but it's by no means a necessity.

Very creeping and disturbing museum. You have to train your mind to not think about the fact that these are human remains. Once you can move past that, the museum is an interesting insight into the anatomy of the human body. Bit far from the centre so account for an additional $6.40 on top of your €7 entry fee if you wanna go here but you're staying in the CBD.

Although the information texts are synonymous for non-medical practitioners to understand, but they are only in English and Dutch to read. Much of the work is on malformations during pregnancy, so prospective parents should follow the advice of the museum and not visit the exhibition. Even for children under 12 years, I would not necessarily recommend the exhibition. Admission was about 7 € for adults.
