Stumbled on this hidden gem. Very small free museum is a labor of love for the volunteers. Museum content is good; even for non chess fans. Lots of background on Euwe as well as other famous players like Bobby Fischer. Chess library very impressive. We topped off our 30 min visit with a game overlooking the plaza with its giant board and commemorative statue.

If you’re a chess lovers or slightly interested with chess, this place is strongly recommend for you. This square is named after Mr. Max Euwe - the Dutch Chess Grandmaster. He was the fifth player to become World Chess Champion, a title he held from 1935 until 1937. The buildings on the square consist of houses, shops and restaurants. Actually this is an entertainment area including the Hard Rock Cafe and The Holland Casino. The Max Euwe Museum is also located on this square (house number 30a). The museum is a bit hard to find because it is located on the 3rd floor and the ground floor door is always locked. Need to wait somebody get in or out to help us open the door. There’s one big chess board on the centre where you can challenge a stranger for a friendly match.

To play chess on the square is a rather good idea. Couldn't find the centre to visit

Museum & Max Euwe Centre are closed. According to opening hours they should be open. No sign or anything

A must-see for anyone with any interest in chess who's visiting Amsterdam. My wife's involvement in chess is essentially limited to enjoying movies such as Searching For Bobby Fischer and even she loved it. Unexpectedly great.

Awesome place for chess lovers! I haven't found anything similar in other major cities! Good level of the players along with some grand masters! Open from morning till 21:00. Also a nice place to chill out since there are no cars

Loved this place! Being a great fan of chess, I spent I guess nearly 2 hours watching people playing. There were always bunch of people stopping by to enjoy the matches.

Nice place to learn a bit about chess history. It is not in English, but one of the workers gave us an awesome little tour. The 'museum' is very small, but there's a study center where you can play for as long as you want. And free coffee ;)

It was a nice experience, the staff helpful, but I feel like there is much lost with the whole museum being in Dutch, as opposed to having translations in place, along with the Dutch versions.
