We made a reservation for Christmas Eve dinner with short notice and even showed up early and they were able to accommodate us. The staff was very friendly. There was a prix fix menu and their regular menu. We ordered from regular menu and ordered BBQ flatbread and burger and shared them. They were both brought out fresh and savory. The temp on the burger was not asked ahead of time but comes out juicy and tender. The Berry Basil and Jack’s Ginger cocktails were refreshing and paired well with our dishes. The ambiance in the evening with all of candles lit is perfection.

Very friendly service and a cosy interior. The food was a little lacking though and I expected a little more from a triple cheese toastie. It was a little dry and could have done with a lot more cheese and butter (to toast the outside with).

Beautiful and good atmosphere. We went for the High Wine & High Beer. The combination of food and wine was delicious. Don’t mistake it for a dinner portion, it really is more like a snack. Great surroundings and terrace if the sun is shining!

Excellent ambient in a historical building where it used to be a church. The interior is very sober but elegant, a reminiscence of antique times. The tables outside are surrounded by the local street market. I had risotto with grilled courgette and Burrata, followed by a glass of white viognier. It was very good.

A really nice place to eat and take some pictures. The food is really good and the history of the building is absolutely amazing. The outside part is really beautiful, specially at night, and it it’s definitely worth paying it a visit if you go to Amsterdam. It’s kinda pricey but it is kinda understandable because of the place, where is it and the prices of other places around it.

Weigh House or The Waag is the oldest remaining non-religious building in Amsterdam. This 15th-century building on Nieuwmarkt square in Amsterdam has also served as a guildhall, museum, fire station and anatomical theater, among others. One can enjoy the flee market, the surrounding or the cafe in building.

Beautiful building De Waag The Waag ("weigh house") is a 15th-century building on Nieuwmarkt square in Amsterdam. It was originally a city gate and part of the walls of Amsterdam. The building has also served as a guildhall, museum, fire station and anatomical theatre, among other things. The Waag The Waag is the oldest remaining non-religious building in Amsterdam.[1] The building has held rijksmonument status since 1970.[2] The Waag is depicted in Rembrandt's 1632 painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. The surgeons' guild commissioned this painting for their guildhall in the Waag. HistoryEdit

A beautiful morning place, historic building at Nieuwmarkt square. The food is good. Menu big enough to pick some nice dishes.

A historic place (former Gate to the city, then market place, followed by a Museum) with character. Lots of staff as a cafe and restaurant. A fixed menu that is presented well and timed well. So it is good the kitchen is in order. The house wines were a bit bland, not even worth using vivino for it... And the food could have had a bit more flavours and taste. Also I was a bit surprised to have gotten the beetroot salad with cous cous as a starter, and then cous cous for the main dish... Have they got a bit too much cous cous? None the less, the kitchen is accommodating for dietary requirements. The interior amazing. They use candles for light to keep the natural ambience. Definitely worth the visit.

This is advertised as a ‘sight’ worthy of seeing - it was not quite what we expected, albeit a lovely cafe… No one was sitting indoors at the time of our visit - the outside area was busy. Fairly steep steps lead down the clean toilets. Staff attentive & friendly. We only ordered drink so cannot comment on the food, but when looking at those around us the food looked amazing.

The Waag is the old weighing house from the time of the Dutch golden age, a relic of a rich past. Now, it is a building which houses a restaurant with the accompanying patio laid out directly outside. The Waag is a good landmark to find yourself as it is in the center of Newmarkt square.

This is a nice location right in the middle of a small farmers market. They had a good selection of food. We got croquettes, bitterballen, focaccia with goat cheese and balsamic, and cheese sticks. Everything was very yummy and the service was fast and friendly! Plus, the building is gorgeous.

Wonderful restaurant for dinner or a relaxing tea time. Great for a date night or with friends. The staff is super friendly and the food is delicious. They have a wide range of dishes and drinks. The deco is very cozy and the atmosphere is lovely. They even apologised for the inconvenience of only having one toilet.

(Translated by Google) Great place. Nice terrace with the necessary fire holes in some cushions but an autumn sun on your face. I don't understand clearing outside. Messy trays with dirty glasses and or bottles. Also a container with dirty dishes. In the autumn there is little vermin, but I can imagine that in the summer, if it goes like that, there will be many mosquitoes, flies, wasps or bees flying around. Anyhow, just bring that mess inside. After all; staff walk in anyway to get drinks. (Original) Prima plek.

There are many old ornaments and reliefs in natural stone to discover. And the Waag itself is usually surrounded by stalls, stalls, the fishmonger and you name it. A neat castle in Amsterdam and not too far from the central station! Unfortunately, you can't always see a lot of it because it is used as a venue for various events. Either way, it is still a cool historical landmark that you should check out if you are in the area!

We had an amazing experience at this place. It is situated right in the middle of a market and very hard to miss being such a big castle :-) Ambience inside was lively with candles lit all over the place. Food was awesome and the starters are definitely recommended. The service was very good and the staff really helped even though it was peak time. Definitely worth the visit!!

The food was good, services excellent and.nice atmosphere in a good location. Thus was a dinner for a conference, so a small group of people attended the dinner with a set menu. The tuna salad was good and the fish with Asian flare was quote tasty. The sauce had a bit of sourish flavor and udon noodles as the base. Services were good and overall, a very satisfying experience.

The least favourite place I’ve visited in Amsterdam. If you ask starter and main, they will bring both together and will act as if its your fault. Service overall was not great, probably because it’s popular because of the location. I would avoid this place, you probably find better options across the street.

Located in Nieuwmarkt which is right in the middle of the old city of Amsterdam. Back in the day, the restaurant was used as a gate /entry and exit point for boats/ships. The ambience is lovely, friendly staff. The restaurant could get quite busy as the food is delish and priced right as well. Proost!

Held a team lunch here on a Friday afternoon. Great lunch menu, the fish dishes were delicious. The dessert was a little too sweet, and too sour for me, but nevertheless still good. The location is perfect, the building is gorgeous inside and out. Just too bad that they are not flexible with the pricing. We were with 16, and not everyone took a starter and some skipped dessert, yet the prices were still the same per person. A waitress (blond) was also a little rough on the edges, rushed while there are not so many tables to serve. All in all, a good lunch.

The place is beautiful, and with a pleasant atmosphere. The waiter was very nice and helpful and switched to Spanish when he heard us talking. The 3 stars are for the food, very expensive for the quality you receive. Also for the dirty toilets.

Very warm and cozy. It was rainy and we came to get warmer. The building is amazing. They have good cheesecake. The Chai latte was way too sweet, I asked hot water to dilute it. Toilets are closed, they have temporary ones which was really nasty.

Great place to visit when being a tourist in Amsterdam! The candles play a lot in the positive mark of this place. It is very nice to be surrounded by so many candles. Food and staff is very nice, the beer a little overpriced but OK overall.

In de waag: The restaurant has a really nice atmosphere and looks really nice! Food was stunning even if the size of the Flamekuech was a bit disappointing. ( anyway for twelve euros, it was enough in term of price/quality ). The waitress did her best but took ages to bring us the bill and drink. We had to wait for 30 minutes for someone to ask us if we had make our choice and after we had to ask 3 times for the bill and the last one we waited for 40 minutes to finally pay. Overall, super nice spot but not good enough service quality.

  • 4/5 Miriam O. 9 months ago on Google
First time but probably not what we expected. I have heard many times that this is cool place to eat, so finally found a time to visit it. It was lovely sunny Sunday afternoon and we were also able to find the spot in the sun, on the terrace. Great thing was that we had a chance to get Gulpener beer, which we like, but the disappointment came with the food. We wanted to order the flatbread with BBQ chicken - the chicken was not available. Second, we chose the Caesar salad with the chicken - again, chicken was not anymore. Therefore we asked for the Caesar salad with two eggs instead of chicken and croquette... I dont think chicken breast is something the restaurant like De Waag should miss on Sunday at 13.00. The food is great, the taste is fine, the service is okay, but being told that the chicken is not available anymore while two guests around us were served while we came... well, hard to guess the real reason. I think I will give it a second chance somewhere in the future, but probably will put some other places first.

Great Whitefish Dish served with their special sauce and couscous. Really enjoyed it and satisfied. The venue's castle-like ambiance can be great at night too. Service can be better as I think they are understaffed.

We stayed in Amsterdam and visited Waag on the evening of our 30th Anniversary. Whitley and the team treated us fantastically. We had the most wonderful meal (Cote De Boeuf) and it was excellent. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I cannot recommend this restaurant more highly. Thank you Whitley!

(Translated by Google) The Waag on the Nieuwmarkt is finally there again 'not overflowing', but I feel as it was once intended. I am well aware of the fact that there are people who loved the crowds, but since the Covid epidemic I have found myself again in Amsterdam. In the 1970s it was my home and I saw the old center around the new market turn into a true gate of hell in 50 years. The St. Antoniespoort (de Waag) was given a square after a roof overhang and for centuries this square provided security and entertainment to the local residents. There was the market, the fair and other events until the 'trolleys' completely engulfed the city, at first gradually but later increasingly inevitably. The added value? Income ... Nobody thought about the historical environment anymore: the surgical courses in the Medieval Waag, the coal boats on the Gelderse quay, the opium sliders on the Zeedijk, the pleasant place that the Red Light District once were. And rightly so, because you can't eat history. But now, all of a sudden, while during the umpteenth 'Closure' (what a simple and troll-like, superficial k-word that 'Lockdown' ...) it becomes clear to me, suddenly one evening in January 2021. ! Finally without tourists, it breathes its history again, gives comfort to the occasional visitor. Street contacts are suddenly no longer superficial, life is about something again. How a 'Covid closure' turned into an absolute blessing. May it always stay that way. Long live the Nieuwmarkt, long live the Waag. Put it on Femke, I'm not a fan of yours, not even at all ... but your policy makes me very hopeful.
