This is a statue of a little boy with a mischievous grin on his face and his hands on his hips. We happened to pass by as it is on Spui Square, not far from the center.

An interesting sculpture to see at Spui is Lieverdje (Little Darling). The statue is also referred to as Amsterdams Lieverdje an is a bronze depiction of a smiling young boy in cap, with arms on his hips. The figure is atop a simple but roughly surfaced pedestal and is situated just across from the historic Caffe Hoppe. Symbolically, the Lieverdje monument is supposed to represent the youth of Amsterdam, always playing tricks and pranks yet still with a golden heart. Its worth a quick look-see and a picture or two when passing through Spui.

Het Lieverdje is a sculpture in a square in Amsterdam, across the canal from St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral. A bronze figure of a boy has been standing on a small pedestal in the Square of Nations since 1959. The author is the Dutch sculptor-experimenter Karel Kneulman. The sculpture is considered an image of youth, and even a symbol of the city.

The Amsterdams Lieverdje is a sculpture of a stereotypical view of an Amsterdam boy as the mischievous, but kind hearted little darling. The sculpture depicts a boy of 10, dressed in a short sleeved shirt, shorts and wearing a cap on his head. He has a mischievous little grin on his face as if having just played a prank. It's a cute little statue, but I wouldn't go out of the way to see it. As it's located on Spui, and within the main tourist circuit, it's worth a small detour if you've got time or if visiting Amsterdam with children.

The Amsterdam "Lieverdje" The word "sweetie" came to prominence in 1947. In the daily newspaper Parool, journalist Henri Knap wrote thus about one 10-year-old boy who saved a dog from drowning. The term was synonymous with the Amsterdam street brat: looking for mischief, but with a heart of gold. In the 1960s the statue became a meeting point for social innovators. This is how Provo's organized them "happenings" around the statue. The "sweetheart" is also regularly festively dressed, but also defaced and kidnapped. The statue still symbolizes the character of Amsterdam: lively, but also a bit difficult.

(Translated by Google) Located in Spui Square, this statue represents street children in Amsterdam, mischievous but with a good heart. It was realized in bronze by the local sculptor Carel Kneulman, being based on a history that circulated around the city from 1947 and that spoke of a boy who had rescued a dog drowned in the channel. The work was inaugurated in 1960, being financed by the Eindhoven cigarette factory Van Hunter, which caused much controversy, due to the opposition of groups that were against tobacco consumption. In 2012 the image was rammed by a truck suffering serious damage, but it was repaired and placed back on its site in just one month. On occasion of certain events the statue dressed, having become a symbol of the city; it came to appear on postage stamps and even on the coat of arms of the defunct F.C.Amsterdam football team.

On Saturday the first of June 2019 I joined a Comedy Walk in the center of Amsterdam (the Netherlands), which started at statue ‘t Lieverdje and was led by (hard)Kor Hoebe. Funniest dude ever!❗️🤣 Not only did he give us a great tour (almost got mixed up in a very colourful Surinam Festival, 💃🏽🎉🕺🏾showing us the WW-II Nazi-headquarters, ending at the Gay Monument🌈, telling us about bringing home one X-Mas Eve his best - gay - friend to his deep-religeous (former) anti-gay mum, who landed enthusiastically on her doorstep screaming “Hi, I’m Kevin! So, where are the twelve men?”). He also showed us a lovely chapel and shared some historical information with us, which I found very interesting. I am definitely planning on doing this more often (also with other comedians), 👣because I know: whether it will be raining or not, I will be laughing all the way!❗️✨👌
