The city of Amsterdam was built upon grounds around the Amstel River. For centuries this important waterway shaped the development of the city, providing the the lifeline of commerce for inhabitants. There are several locations within the city centre where you can see or experience the Amstel. Boat rides on the river are a popular activity. Waling its banks can be equally enjoyable. I particularly like spending time on the Amstel in the area around Blauwbrug (Blue Bridge) and the Hermitage Museum, where you can enjoy its scale and watercraft activity and see a fair number of bridge crossings as well. A walk along the shores in this area allow you to enjoy buildings from the Golden Age of the 17th century which line sections of the Amstel. Again, this is quintessential Amsterdam for those interested in the history of this marvellous city.

The water was delicious. We went on a canal cruise and they claim the water is so clean that you can drink it, so we did. I highly recommend staying on a houseboat or canal boat on the main water artery in Amsterdam or one it's many canals. There are many to choose from on Airbnb.

The river runs through all of Amsterdam and is one of its vital arteries. Both shores have great views and nice places to take pictures.

The Amstel is a river in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It flows from the Aarkanaal and Drecht in Nieuwveen northwards, passing Uithoorn , Amstelveen , and Ouderkerk aan de Amstel , to the IJ in Amsterdam. The Amstel (after Aeme-stelle, an Old Dutch word for "watery area") is a canalized river in the south of North Holland, partly on the border of North Holland with South Holland and Utrecht. The area along the river is referred to as Amstelland. Amsterdam owes its name to the Amstel. Along the Amstel there are many places to be found with spectacular views, both landscapes and an ever varying manifestation of Dutch skies that did inspire so many Dutch painters throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries.

As rivers go this was a mediocre river. The web of canals was alluring, making me want to go deeper into the web. The bridges had legs, but the flow was tame. No one waved back from my cruise, I guess the magic really has gone from this city. My friend Charlotte said the guide was silk on the blower (loudspeaker) but i feel he was a few eggs short of a spiders nest. He showed us the mint tower and I couldn’t believe my 16 eyes! Also, I am a spider

This station is quite old, the spacious building was built in the 30s, by a dutch architect. I have been travelling through this station since the eighties and it has never changed. The main hall is large. The tunnel to the platforms is quite dark, concrete and slightly spooky. There are two platforms, everything is easy to find. I like the spacious kiosk on the platform direction Utrecht.

Lovely area to walk around, gives the same vibes and feelings like the super known buildings close to Amsterdam Centraal. Less touristy, but a lovely view of the canals and the boats residing there.
