The
city
of
Amsterdam
was
built
upon
grounds
around
the
Amstel
River.
For
centuries
this
important
waterway
shaped
the
development
of
the
city,
providing
the
the
lifeline
of
commerce
for
inhabitants.
There
are
several
locations
within
the
city
centre
where
you
can
see
or
experience
the
Amstel.
Boat
rides
on
the
river
are
a
popular
activity.
Waling
its
banks
can
be
equally
enjoyable.
I
particularly
like
spending
time
on
the
Amstel
in
the
area
around
Blauwbrug
(Blue
Bridge)
and
the
Hermitage
Museum,
where
you
can
enjoy
its
scale
and
watercraft
activity
and
see
a
fair
number
of
bridge
crossings
as
well.
A
walk
along
the
shores
in
this
area
allow
you
to
enjoy
buildings
from
the
Golden
Age
of
the
17th
century
which
line
sections
of
the
Amstel.
Again,
this
is
quintessential
Amsterdam
for
those
interested
in
the
history
of
this
marvellous
city.
