Fairly used to camping, my family and I were a bit disappointed about this park from what it was hyped up to be. This was our first visit to Pokagon and I think it could change if we go again with some different expectations. First, it is a beautiful park and great location with nice recreational opportunities. Positioned next to Lake James and Snow Lake but close enough to I-69 gives Pokagon a doable trip for many travelers in the Trine State Area. Location is great for us who are from Bowling Green/Toledo, Ohio area. We did like the size of the park and all the attendants were helpful and kind! The camp store had plenty of supplies, even more than what you'd expect. Just a bit more pricey than a normal store. Our disappointment came down to the actual site we stayed at and the condition of that campground. We stayed at site 101 and it was fairly obvious when we got there why it was unreserved. The site is at the bottom of the hill and the first campsite in the loop. It offered plenty of shade but was not suited well for tent camping. Majority of the site was a thick layer of gravel (except for the low spots), which made staking the tents down pretty difficult. The weather seems like it could change quickly due to lake effect from Lake Michigan, so tent camping in a low spot was not ideal. There was plenty of room otherwise, but the layout was a bit long and awkward at this particular site. Some of the other sites on the loop offered much better layouts from what we saw. The other big drawbacks were that it is very close to the water treatment plant which has a fairly loud humming noise constantly and sorta ruins the peaceful camping atmosphere. The edge of the campsite near the woods was full of poison ivy and roaches, another disadvantage with us having kids who wanted to play freely. Fire pit seems adequate and worked alright, but I've seen much better at Michigan and Ohio state parks. A bonus was that the bathrooms/showers were clean and conveniently located in the center of the campground loop. The "playground" in Campground 1 was just a couple of tall swings... nothing else. Also, the beach area was a good size and a lot of fun! Definitely the best redeeming quality for our trip. Overall I'm disappointed we picked this site for our trip here. We ended up leaving a day early because of it. Wish the online pics on their website were better, which would have helped influence our decision to stay somewhere else at the park. Hope to come back and have a better experience someday!

We had a good time today at Pokagon State Park. The staff were friendly. The wait for the Toboggan Run wasn’t too bad considering the amount of people. We definitely want to come back in the summer for camping here. It’s a beautiful place!

Pokagon State park is amazing. It's for the naturalist and the naturalist that likes a little bit of civilized world alike. The trails are amazing. Bike trails that are paved. Rollin hills and twisty bends. Beautiful land ape set in a collection of lakes. The stables are great for those wanting a guided tour, the price ces are great for the little ones wanting to ride a pony, or Jack--the mule, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The campgrounds are hilly but a little extra planning for levelling and you're good. The campground is quite large as well. The sites have plenty of room. Roads are little narrow but doable. Be on the lookout, loads of pedestrian travel by foot and bicycle and kids on their electric scooters. A tough ride up one hill is quickly rewarded with a thrilling, curved, decent. Did I mention it's an awesome park! Can't wait to get back and I'm planning a trip for some winter activities; toboggan run, potowatomi in, cross country skiing, warming shelters with natural fires!

Not really happy about this place. I felt there wasn't enough trails for dogs to be on, and I respect the 'No dogs on beach' rule', but for those interested in camping there is a campground onsite with access to the beach via walking. If you're bring your dogs please remember to follow the guidelines and yes you have to pay to enter. Non Indiana residents was about $9. This was really not worth it if you're trying to hike. But there was a cool area where you can get ski gear during the winter and had a really nice fireplace. I gave it 3 stars just because it was a state park which others might find quaint, but overall I was not happy, please don't let this review hinder your experience still go out there and see for yourself

Loved our visit. The campsite was a bit uneven but we managed. There were plenty of hiking trails to explore, and nothing was too difficult or too far. All the staff were super friendly and the walk on the beach was a bonus.

Just select any trail, after one minute you don’t hear any cars and you feel you are in the deepest wilderness. Plenty of miles to cover either running or walking. Trails are well marked, it is neat and clean, no rubbish lying around. Really excellent place to enjoy fresh air and spend some time in beautiful nature.

Very nice park. The campgrounds are very clean. There is no direct water hookup for campers. I chose a campsite next to a water supply for that reason. However, the water supply was disconnected. We had to walk quite a ways to reach another one. The lake is very nice, but you constantly hear loud boat motors. We usually kayak, but there are too many large boats for kayaks on the lake. There are many good places to swim though.

Well maintained state Park. Beautiful trails and the Toboggan run is fun during the winter season. The nature center was like a small interactive museum with plenty to read. Plus there's a wildlife viewing area to observe chipmunks, squirrels, blue jays, and many others. The campground has big sites and is well maintained as well. The campstore was well stocked. Comfort stations at the campground do need updated.

I drove cross-country this summer, and had the bad luck to stay here after a super experience at a state park in Ohio. Far from my favorite park, and even though I could forgive Indiana for raining on me, my list of grievances include: 1. terrible signage - I got lost in this huge park numerous times, including driving the wrong way on a one-way loop because the one-way sign was hidden in foliage. I suggest putting arrows on the road, the way all the better parks do. 2. They allow generators until 11:00PM. I couldn't talk to my neighbors, because a thoughtless camper brought his construction generator. There is no-one on site to complain to, either. If you're lucky, some DNR guy will be driving around and you can flag him down. After driving for 6 hours, a good night's rest was needed and not obtained. 3. Shower drain backed up. 4. toilet in my section was pit toilet only, no sink, but plenty of stink 5. For this they charged $60 - 2 days camping fee even though I was only staying one night, PLUS an additional $11 for entering the park. 6.Walnut tree dropped a limb on my site in the middle of the night. Fortunately, I had noticed fallen walnuts on the ground and was careful to put both the car and the tent as far from under the tree as I could get on my postage-stamp-sized campsite.

The lake was still frozen when we were there even though the temperature was 65F. The trails are clean and well marked. We did trail 1 which runs parallel to the lake and was beautiful.

Lovely park with a variety of activities available throughout the year. Go to the beach in summer, hike and go to classes all year round, toboggan in the winter, bring your dog or your horse, and get back in nature. The gate workers are always pleasant and available to offer advice on your visit.

Very nice park and trails I didn't even know about. The toboggan ride is also at the top of the list for winter activities.

Hell's Point Challenge completed! (Twice so far... 2.25 hrs) great park, friendly staff, the ideal state park in beautiful Indiana. Nature Center has a brief but awesome exhibit on its history.... there's a glacier lake beach, plenty of trails, dogs are welcome! Very clean campgrounds. There is a Camp Store, too! Where you can buy essential foods and firewood and toys and souveniers.

We love Pokagon! I grew up going camping here with my family every year, and now that my siblings, cousins, and I are all married with children of our own, we continue to return every summer to make more memories! There are nice parks and hiking trails. The nature center has recently been redone, and it has interesting info about the history of the area and is interactive. The campground is good and has a variety of types of sites available. There are several bathhouses and vault toilets around so that you're never far from a toilet. The bathhouse in the non-electric campground has been updated to the new style they've been doing in the Indiana State Parks with separate shower rooms accessible around the outside of the building. The family showers are great for taking the kids in! There needs to be more than 2 though, because if they're both occupied, the individual showers are NOT big for an adult and 2 kids. Rather than constantly hoping we'd be able to use a family one, I gave up and drove to another bathhouse where I could take the toddler with me and have my older daughter in the next stall to me where I could still talk to her and help if needed. Both were clean and well-maintained. My only other criticism is that there needs to be several playgrounds within the campgrounds, instead of the 1 little playground right outside or having to drive over to the picnic area. But these are minor criticisms. We love Pokagon, are very happy camping here, and will continue to return in the future!

I visited Pokagon State Park in July of 2023. My stay in the area was cut short due to no fault of my own, but I did get to hike in a couple of the trails. This state park is beautiful. I also learned the correct way to pronounce Pokagon!

We have a lake house at a nearby lake and love coming to this beautiful state park. The lodge is very cool, they have a nice brunch. We also love the toboggan run which is really fast and a fun thing to do in the winter.

Pokagon is a wonderful place to spend time with family, while being outdoors. They have trails galore, camp sites available, a recently renovated nature center, horse riding, playgrounds, volleyball, and beaches. The nature center is a wonderful place to spend some time as well. There you can learn about the land used by Pokagon state park and the people who lived here. You can also learn all about the flora and fauna. There are all kinds of animals I didn't realize we had until visiting the nature center. My kids, grandma, and I love to spend time in the nature center. The beach by Potawatomi Inn is shallow (about 3 ft.) all the way out to the buoy. The beach is clean. The water is clean. There's plenty of shade, but bringing a beach umbrella doesn't hurt. There is a restroom at the inn you can use, or a more... Primitive bathroom in a small building by the beach is closer. There aren't many picnic tables by the beach, so we bring a blanket for eating on the ground. We were there recently and spent 5 hours just at the beach. If you have people who enjoy collecting shells, walking along the beach, you're sure to find some small ones.

Great little beach. Very clean. A few benches. Has a bathroom and shower. Has a litle snack shop and a place to buy water toys/goggles. Not dog friendly reason why the 4 not 5. I would imagine this place would be super packed on the weekend but during the week it was super nice.

We camped in a none electric camping area. We did have the restrooms not too far from us. The showers were nice as well. My kids really had fun with the horse rides. They really liked going to the beach. The general store did have a little bit of everything in it. We plane on going again really soon.

It was a beautiful day for a hike. It had rained the day before and the trails were not muddy. I wasn't sure how the path would lead to hell's point, but we ended up going up through the slopping trail instead of the stairs! I did check out the gift store in the lodge as well. A few items branded with the park were available; however, other Indiana state parks did have better selections.

We stayed for a weekend and it was lovely. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The bed isn't the best and long term wouldn't have been great but it was fine for just a weekend. Our room was ground floor looking out over the lake and the view was beautiful. Though some of the patio rooms on the ground floor may be obscured by trees, ours was not. My only real complaint is that we were told at check in there were several fireplaces around the inn where we could cozy up. Around 6:30 on a Sunday night we decided to venture out and hang out at one of the fireplaces but only the one in the lobby was lit. When we asked to have another fire lit in the library, we were told that only maintenance was able to light them and that they had already left for the evening. It was a little disappointing and I just wish we had been told there was a time cut off to request having a fireplace lit. Perhaps they keep more lit during the colder months when the toboggan is open. Our visit was the week before Thanksgiving. The trails were well kept and easy hiking, one took you around the lake. It would be cool to see the park in the summer when everything is in bloom! Overall it was a very relaxing weekend.

The pups love it! Great trails & some quiet beaches on the lake. Can’t wait til we can get out there again & discover more of what the park has to offer.

  • 4/5 Micaela E. 1 year ago on Google
Here are the nicest things I can say about this park: 1.) It has the best inn I have ever seen at a state park. For real--it's quite fancy and I'd imagine staying there would be a real treat. 2.) It has a beach, which must be very nice for locals in the warmer months. 3.) It has a toboggan run, which much be similarly very nice for locals during the colder months. But unless you are availing yourself of these things, the park doesn't have much to offer. Or to be more blunt about it, there are other parks that do those things better.

Indiana's state parks are 1st class and Pokagon is no exception. This was our 1st time camping at Pokagon. Some great trails to hike on and a nicely paved bicycle trail. The artesian spring along with it's shelter was a hit for the kids.

Closest comparison to Higgins lake in Michigan that we've found here in Indiana for camping, trails and lake. Will be going back every year! Good accomodations.

We love Pokagon. The trails range in difficulty so you can decide what you are up for on any given day. We hike often and my kids enjoy these trails a lot. The bike paths were great when we were camping - the kids rode their bikes while we walked with the baby in the stroller. Lots of adventures to be had here!
