The initial temple of sacred tooth,(to safely and honorably keep the sacred tooth) to be kept close to the throned king.Made of bricks ,still remains the major part of it after centuries of negligence. *I don't know why the authorities are not even making a protective cover/roof over these and a fence to keep the area clear .

The original home for the Sacred Buddha Tooth Relic some 2400 years ago. Much of this area is still being excavated, so many new buildings and complexes are being found. A fun place to explore, but be mindful of the history.

Ancient temple of tooth in Anuradhapura. This is one of the earliest shrines for the sacred tooth relic. The tooth relic became the symbol of royals in the ancient Sri Lanka so the location of the tooth relic shifted with the shift of kingdoms after the anuradhapura kingdom. However the shrines remained abandoned.

The tooth relic temple at Anuradhapura is located at this place. It is said this building is built close to the royal palace as the tooth relic was the symbol of the crown and it was important to ensure the safety of the tooth relic. Had been subjected to number of invations from south India considering the importance to the kingdom.

I was blessed to worship the sacred temple of the tooth in this morning. I suggest you to go there before 11 a.m. so you can get a chance to see the “dalada Karaduwa” ( the place where the budda’s tooth in) and see inside and worship it more closser. There’s a lot of people going there and you have to wait in the queue for about an hour.If you going on a busy day I suggest you to go there as the earliest you can.Don’t wear clothes ( which is shorter from your knee, sleeveless , patch denims , tight jeans with crop tops etc)

This was the shrine where lord Buddhas tooth relic was kept and protected in the Anuradhapura kingdom. Tooth relic is now moved to Kandy Dalada Maligawa. Ancient remains of a moderately big construction is evident...

This is situated in the middle of the Anuradhapura ancient Citadel(ඇතුළු නුවර). According to chronicles of Mahawamsa the Dalada Geya(දළදා ගෙය/House for Sacred tooth relic) was built in the middle of the Anuradhapura citadel. This was discoverd by Professor Senarath Paranawithana. The old Anuradhapura main road was above this site before tge excavation. This can be dated back to Anuradhapura Era.

One surprising thing about Sri Lanka is how heavily Buddhist it is (70% of the population, as opposed to about 11% Hindu and 8% Muslim), with a Buddhist shrine or temple seemingly every few kilometers. The Temple of the Tooth is the country's most prominent temple, and contains one of Buddha's teeth. The tooth is locked up inside 7 golden caskets and displayed to the public once every 5 years. But how do you know it's real? Well, you don't, but you can have faith that there's a sweet tooth in Kandy.

This place gets hot in March and April so near in mind you’ll need long trousers in the heat. Plenty to see but please ensure you obey religious rules when visiting! You can purchase or rent wraps locally if you only have shirts! A busy place, so expect crowds. Shoes can be left in lockers!
