Anuradhapura
has
been
the
forefront
of
medical
services
in
Sri
Lanka,
from
the
days
of
ancient
kings.
According
to
the
archaeological
reports
the
monuments
of
the
ancient
hospital
in
Mihintale
which
was
built
by
King
Sena
II
dates
back
to
the
9th
century.
Anuradhapura
Teaching
Hospital
is
the
third
biggest
hospital
in
Sri
Lanka
and
situated
at
central
location
of
the
new
city
occupying
a
total
land
area
of
18069
hectares.
It
caters
to
a
population
of
1.1
million
in
the
north
central
province
and
to
about
0.5
million
of
adjoining
northern
and
western
provinces.
It
had
a
bed
strength
of
2029
in
2017.
The
annual
indoor
admissions
are
over
100000
and
the
number
of
live
births
that
take
place
in
the
hospital
exceeds
10000
annually.
Also
the
average
daily
attendance
of
patients
(Clinic
and
OPD)
exceeds
1200.
In
March
2018
the
constructions
for
a
new
Accident
service
and
the
emergency
treatment
unit
started
with
an
estimated
cost
of
528
million
rupees.
At
that
time
the
hospital
was
facilitated
with
264
medical
officers
(Although
the
required
carder
is
400)
,
955

officers,
15
Radiographers
and
11
ECG
technicians.
And
the
above
staff
was
a
significantly
lower
number
than
the
required.
The
dedicated
work
of
the
staff
of
the
Anuradhapura
Teaching
Hospital
was
remarkable
,
during
the
humanitarian
operations
in
the
Wanni,
nursing
thousands
of
injured
soldiers.
Also
this
is
the
primary
teaching
hospital
of
the
students
of
the
faculty
of
Medicine,
University
of
Rajarata.
