This Anuradhapura ancient bridge was built of stone blocks. This is not the whole column, but a small part of it. It can be thought that this bridge was also used for transportation in ancient times. Here, stone slabs are laid across 3 rows of stone pillars. The stone bridge was originally built over the Giant's Canal, a canal and water outlet that carried water from a nearby lake to irrigate the neighboring paddies. But today there is no giant canal under the bridge. Today there is a small waterway at this place. Ancient ruins of a bridge constructed in Anuradhapura era for the purpose of crossing Malwathu River. This bridge demonstrates the excellence of Sri Lanka's ancient engineering. Also, when I went to see this old stone bridge, I also saw a well-grown paddy field. However, reaching this is quite an arduous journey. But you can experience a beautiful natural environment. Situated in the ancient city of Anuradhapura in the Cultural Triangle area of Sri Lanka, this has been built over the Malwathu Oya where it passes the village of Permiyankulama. Only a part of this ruined bridge exists today and it has been dated back to the 5-9 centuries. As folklore states, during the reign of King Dewanampiyatissa when Bhikkuni Sangamitta arrived from Dambakolapattana (India) with the sapling of the Jaya Shri Maha Bodhi under which Gautama Buddha attained Enlightenment, the King built this bridge for her to travel to Anuradhapura. This stone bridge measures 10 feet in width and a horse carriage could easily get through. It is situated well above spill level and 9 granite pillars still stand today. This ancient stone bridge lies just about 100 meters from the Abayagiri Vihara complex, down the Kuttampokuna-Galpalama (B509) road. Situated in a highly scenic surrounding this is a must-visit when in Anuradhapura.

Anuradhapura was the first real capital of Sri Lanka over two thousand two hundred years ago. The road network was in a highly developed stated during this era, with major roads leading to Trincomalee, Mannar, Jaffna and the southern kingdoms from Anuradhapura. These roads were not only used for foot traffic but carts carrying goods traveling on trade and commercial activities. With the development of the road network, the ancient kings built sturdy bridges out of granite slabs and pillars. Ruins in various bridges around Anuradhapura can be found across Malwathu Oya, Hal Pan Ela, Kandara Oya, Yan Oya, Kala Oya and Deduru Oya. The road leading to Perimiyankulama Gal Palama is located close to the Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds). Traveling 3,4 kms from Sangamitta Mawatha, passing some picturesque paddy fields, you can reach the point where this ancient stone bridge crosses the Mawathu Oya. Only a part of this stone bridge can be seen today. Stone slabs are laid across rows of 3 stone pillars. There have been attempt to restore this bridge in the recent past but work has been abruptly stopped in 2001. But recent visit showed the bridge conserved to a great extent. This stone bridge has been dated to 5-9th centuries. There are at number of stone bridges discovered in Sri Lanka. These are in various states while some have been conserved to an extent. The most popular is the bridge over the Malwathu Oya.

this bridge could be consider to have belonged to the road network that existed to provide transport from Anuradhapura city to the suburbs even from the beginning of the Anuradhapura period.this bridge had been designed for transport across the Malwathu Oya river and over this was the highway to North of the country. In designing this bridge the high flood level of the Malwathu Oya had been taken in to account with cross beams place over rock column and smoothly textured beams placed longitudinally to span the cross beams

Amazing creation done in the olden time.A must see.this was initially about 1.5km long rock road constructed over water.Still remains some parts intact.Truly a marvelous and unimaginable piece of creation done by the historic folks. *Kind of sad because the authorities had not given any regard to this place. No reservation activities,no displays ,no information ,no security ,no proper access by roads provided for this historic sites.Hope at least someone will start a proper planned reservation program.

Mirisawetiya Stupa at Night The Mirisaweti Stupa (Sinhala: මිරිසවැටිය, Mirisavæṭiya) is a memorial building, a stupa, situated in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.[1] King Dutugamunu (161 BC to 137 BC) built the Mirisaveti Stupa after defeating King Elara. After placing the Buddha relics in the sceptre, he had gone to Tissa Wewa for a bath leaving the sceptre. After the bath he returned to the place where the sceptre was placed, and it is said that it could not be moved. The stupa was built in the place where the sceptre stood. It is also said that he remembered that he partook a chilly curry without offering it to the sangha. In order to punish himself he built the Mirisavetiya Dagaba. The extent of this land is about 50 acres (20 ha). Although the king Kasyapa I and Kasyapa V renovated this, from time to time it was dilapidated.

Amazed by the architectural skill that ancient Sinhalese had. Stones laid for the bridge wasn't from anywhere near the bridge. They were transported from miles and miles away. It implies that they had an efficient way of transporting heavy materials also.

(Translated by Google) The goldfish garden Ranmassu Gardens is a garden containing the ancient Magul Gardens of Sri Lanka. It is located near the Isurumuni Vihara and Tisa Wewa in the Anuradhapura town of Sri Lanka. Located on 40 acres (16 hectares), it is an outstanding example of horticultural architecture in Sri Lanka. According to an inscription found in Wessagiriya, the garden was supplied with water by the Tissa Wewa and subsequently released to the paddy fields around the Isurumuni Vihara. The Royal Gardens were first built during the reign of King Tissa (3rd century BC). However, today's pavilions and other fixtures are still in use. Dates from the 8th to 9th centuries. Published in the Internet and television documentaries, carving in the garden known as the "Sakwala Chakra" is an interface or a star door between humans and intelligent people. Archaeologists have said that the carving could be a first-world map. There are various ponds in the garden and ruins of small buildings. According to legend, Prince Saliya is believed to have met Ashokamalla in this garden. Mirisawetiya Dagaba has been built by King Dutugamunu (161-137 BC) and this belongs to Mahavihara Complex. King Dutugamunu is the great king who defeated the Tamil invaders who ruled the country for 30 years and brought the country under one ruler. When the great king Dutugamunu was going to the water festival after his consecration he left his sceptre (kunta) which had a scared relic of Buddha inside, on this location. When he returned the kunta was stuck and nobody could remove it. So the king seeing this miracle constructed a Dagaba here. It is said that he called this dagaba “Mirisavatiya” because the king forgot to present a food made out of chilli (miris) to the Buddhist priests before he consumed it. It was the practise of the king to present a portion of all the food which is cooked in this castle to the priests before he consume it. The Dagaba was restored in the in the 1980’s but the whole construction collapsed in 1987.

This is one significant example of the engineering skills of our #ancestors. I was amazed when I first visited this place. This place is also surrounded by beautiful #paddy fields and water streams. Being located in a very quiet and calm environment, this bridge holds not a single iron or plastic and is constructed with pure stone chunks.

Stone bridge built in the early Anuradhapura kingdom. Anuradhapura kingdom was from 377 BC to 1070 AD. This is built over the Malwathu Oya (canal). Engineering was very advanced to build such a construct. Useful for primary students. It is in their text books.

(Translated by Google) The bridge of the ancient times belonged to the king during which time it was built. Ruins of the ancient civilization including the great Dagabud Aram and the tanks have still been saved in Anuradhapura. Accordingly, a large number of people lived around the kingdom of Anuradhapura at the time. The bridges had to be designed to accommodate their travel and people's needs. These canopies were designed to carry a cart. Very beautiful and calm area. Ancient place. Ranmasu Uyana is a park in Sri Lanka containing the ancient Magul Uyana (Royal Gardens). It is situated close to Isurumuni Vihara and Tissawewa in the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It sits on approximately 40 acres , and is a noted example of Sri Lankan garden architecture of the pre-Christian era. According to an inscription found in Vessagiriya, the water to the park was supplied by Tessa Wewa and then released to rice fields around Isurumuni Vihara.

This museum, south of the Abhayagiri Dagoba, is arguably the most interesting in Anuradhapura and contains a collection of squatting plates, jewellery, pottery and religious sculpture from the site. There's a lot of information about the many monuments of Anuradhapura, and a small bookshop. The Chinese-funded building commemorates the 5th-century visit of Chinese Buddhist monk Fa Xian to Anuradhapura. Fa Xian spent two years (412–13 AD) living at Abhayagiri, translating Buddhist texts that he later carried back to China along the Silk Route.

  • 5/5 Tekshan K. 3 years ago on Google
This also destroyed one of the best Vahalkada structures of Anuradhapura Era. The Dagaba you see now was completed in the 1993 and is enclosing the remains of the original Dagaba and has lost all historic features of the original. The present dagaba is 192 feet (59 metres) in height and 141 (43 metres) feet in diameter. A British scholar who examined this monument in the late 19th century recorded the diameter of the original stupa 168 feet (51 meters) and the height about 200 feet (61 meters) .

After the bath he returned to the place where the sceptre was placed, and it is said that it could not be moved. The stupa was built in the place where the sceptre stood. It is also said that he remembered that he partook a chilly curry without offering it to the sangha. In order to punish himself he built the Mirisavetiya Dagaba

Construction of Mirisewatiya was started by King Dutugemunu and completed by King Saddathissa. It is one of the temples which belongs to 'Atamasthanaya'(8 temples of worship). The temple has a relatively less crowd when compared to other stupas belonging to 'Atamasthanaya'.

(Translated by Google) Mirisawetiya is one of the Atamasthana. There are two main views regarding the construction of the Mirisawetiya Chaitya. The most famous and historically accepted view of this is the story of the chili fish. According to the Mahavamsa, king Dutugemunu had eaten a chilli fish without accepting the apex. The other view is that King Dutugemunu fought with King Elara and anointed Jayalabaya and landed at Tisa Wewa on the seventh day of the waterfall. The work of the stupa and the monastery was completed in three years and it is said that nearly 200,000 bhikkhu bhikkus participated in the Mirisaavati ceremony. May the Triple Gem Bless You !!! Infinite Blessing will bring comfort to all three worlds. May we all be enlightened and enlightened beyond all limits !!! Less visit point North of Anuradhapura ancient city. Small part of bridge can be seen, but it gives the idea of technology used during Anuradhapura era. Originally it was nearly 1000M long according to the archaeologists.

the stone bridge in Anurudhapura is situated 5.3km from Thuparamaya which is little over 200 km away from Colombo. It is believed that the bridge was part of the ancient busy road system more than 2000 years ago. Bridge is built by laying rectangular flat granite slabs on granite pillars.

Superb place to take a snap with the nature. You have to go along a bumpy ride to reach this destination. But it is worth the drive. This place is good for a sightseeing off the track of Anuradhapura pilgrimage route

Built across the famous Malwathu oya, which of the basin Anuradhapura early settlers lived which outgrew into a city. In order to go North you have to cross this river and this must have been a very important bridge on that road. People say there are more to this bridge and the remaining slabs can be found in the nearby paddy fields, which may be true given the fact that the river has moved and narrowed over the time to the current shape. They have built a new bridge next to it but the connecting roads are not complete yet. As a side note though: this makes Sri Lankans wonder what the heck happened to this country. Quit making excuses and do something useful people!

Perimiyankulama Gal Palama (Stone Bridge) over Malwathu Oya – Anuradhapura – අනුරාධපුර පෙරියන්කුලම මල්වතු ඔය ගල් පාලම Anuradhapura was the first real capital of Sri Lanka over two thousand two hundred years ago. Stone Bridge over Malwathu Oya (Anuradhapura) Stone Bridge over Halpan Ela (Anuradhapura) Stone Bridge close to Mahakanadarawa Reservoir (Mihintale) Stone Bridge at the Girihandu Seya  (Tiriyaya) Kayankerni Stone Bridge  (Eastern Province) Habagama Stone Bridge Yanoya Stone Bridge Weliela Mankada Stone Bridge Palamgala Stone Bridge Alubedda Stone Bridge Palugaswewa Stone Bridge Thirappane Stone Bridge Ebawalapitiya Stone Bridge Thulawelliya Stone Bridge
