It's a beautiful and amazing site of Anuradhapura old town. It is maybe the most important part or the whole Anuradhapura UNESCO's world heritage site. It's a complex site with stupas, refectories, ponds, temples, and more. If you like walking, you should try walking around. I did visit there with completely by walking 😅. You can buy a ticket to visit most of ancient site of Anuradhapura UNESCO's world heritage site with 25$ for foreigners.

In the reign of King Mahasen, the growth of Abhayagiri reached its height and was the center of Mahayana Buddhism. Buddhist structures found in the vicinity of Abhayagri suggest that this complex was an important local and foreign educational institution.

The stupa was built by the King Walagammba in 1 BC. This is considered as the second largest stupa in Sri Lanka. The stupa was originally 400ft in height although now it is only 253ft in height. Once the Abhyagiriya was a greatest Buddhists educational institute.

If you're a heritage enthusiast, don't miss the chance to visit one of the Biggest Stupa in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Built with ancient Sinhalese engineering technology, Abhayagiriya is a must-see for travelers exploring the sacred city of Anuradhapura. 🚶‍♂️ It's just a short 2-3 minute walk from the Ruwanweli Maha Seya temple. 🚶‍♀️ 👑 Founded by King Valagamba, Abhayagiriya is one of the 'Atamasthana' in Anuradhapura, boasting a rich historical significance. 🏛️In its heyday, Abhayagiriya monastery was home to around 6000 monks, making it a powerhouse of non-Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka. 🧘‍♂️ 🕌 While Abhayagiriya and Jethawanaramaya may look alike, you can easily distinguish between the two by observing their spires (koth kerella). The massive Jethawanaramaya stupa exhibits more extensive damage compared to the smaller Abhayagiriya stupa. 🗼 Take your time to explore the vast surroundings, as there's so much more to see beyond the Stupa. Numerous ruins, ponds and statues are scattered throughout the vast land. 🏞️ Don't forget to visit the Abhayagiriya museum complex to immerse yourself in the glorious past of this once-massive Buddhist monastery. 🏰📜

Very calm and quiet Buddhist Temple with a long historical value. Abeygiri Stupa is one of the biggest stupas in the world. The temple is also very famous for the two Dewalas at the entrance. There are many other historical sites nearby to visit You'll also love the sight of dozens of beautiful cocks in the premises.

The Chinese traveler monk Fa-Hien (Faxian) in his travelogue 'A Record of Buddhist Kingdoms' says that in the hayday of the Abhayagiri monastery there were about 6000 monks taken residence here. Once it was the powerhouse of non-Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka (which is later came under the umbrella term 'Mahayana') and a formidable opponent too, to the Maha-vihara, which held the authority of Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is the understanding that Ven Faxian obtained the 'Dīrgha-āgama' and the 'Saṃyukta-āgama', the Sanskrit counterparts of the Pali sutta-pitaka texts 'Dīgha Nikaya' and 'Saṃyutta Nikaya', from the Abhayagiri monastery (410 CE) and took them to China which were later translated into Chinese which have survived to this day.

Abhayagiri Vihāra was a major monastery site of Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism that was situated in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is one of the most extensive ruins in the world and one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage cities in the nation. Historically it was a great monastic centre as well as a royal capital, with magnificient monasteries rising to many stories, roofed with gilt bronze or tiles of burnt clay glazed in brilliant colours. To the north of the city, encircled by great walls and containing elaborate bathing ponds, carved balustrades and moonstones, stood "Abhayagiri", one of seventeen such religious units in Anuradhapura and the largest of its five major viharas. One of the focal points of the complex is an ancient stupa, the Abhayagiri Dagaba. Surrounding the humped dagaba, Abhayagiri Vihara was a seat of the Northern Monastery, or Uttara Vihara and the original custodian of the Tooth relic in the island. It is said that this was built by the great King Walagamba.

Abhayagiri Dagoba is the second largest dagaba built in Sri Lanka. The pilgrimage record of the Fa-Hsien is said to have been built by the first Gaja There are two claims that King Bahu and King Vatagamini Abhaya built the stupa built by King Gajabahu I. It is said that King Parakramabahu the Great reformed it in the 12th century. It is believed that the Abhayagiri Dagoba is believed to be a relic of Buddha statues such as dhamani mantras, sutras or Buddha statues. The diadem is 310 feet in diameter. The height is not specified. Some have said that it was 180 cubits. In the early days, the stupa was made of stone and eel. The Dagoba appears to have shrunk after the reconstruction of the seventh century. They are now said to be about 245 feet tall. The mine is about 585 feet in length on one side. That is about 8 acres. There are still ponds and drainage channels ready to drain into such a large courtyard. There is an ivory wall on the outside of the mosque. There are four gates in the four directions. To the left of the west gate is a stone gate. It is a sandy courtyard about 95 feet wide. The four dagobas are four wahalkada. These are decorated with carvings, such as carvings of deities, animal carvings. In the courtyard, parts of the stupa that were placed in the original stupa are still in the courtyard. There is also a clay letter and a flower seat designed as a lotus flower

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗯𝗵𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗶 𝗗𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗯𝗮 - 𝗔𝗻𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗮 Abhayagiri monastery is one of the most interesting & atmospheric quarters of Anuradhapura. This Monastery, originally over 100m high, it was one of the greatest structures in the ancient world, its scale only matched by the pyramids of Giza (and nearby Jetavanarama). Today, after several reconstructions, Abhayagiri Dagoba soars 75m above the forest floor. Visually, it's stunning, and your first glimpse of this brick monument through a gap in the surrounding forest is breathtaking.

Abhayagiri Vihāra was a major monastery site of Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism that was situated in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. This famous world stupa was built by King Valagamba in 1st BC. The Abhayagiriya Dagaba, an ancient dome-shaped stupa. The stupa is completely overgrown with grass and vegetation as it was that much old. However, time to time it has been renovated maintaining to boast of the Buddhist history of Sri Lanka. (Ceylon)

Abhayagiriya stupa (අභයගිරිය ) was build by King Walagamba. This was not only a temple its kind of buddhist university. Hundreds of ancient building spread over huge area. There are lot of archeological sites around this stupa. The stupa located in Watawandana road, near to samadi statue, twin ponds etc. Parking available at site. Not crouded even in long weekends like Ruwanweliseya. Peacefully can worship, and see the ruins and study.

Abhayagiri stupa belongs to the aramic complex of Abhayagiriya Viharaya which was constructed in the reign of King Vattagamini Abaya (commonly known as King Valagamba) in the 1st Century BC. Today, the main attraction of this aramaic complex  is the massive Abayagiri Stupa which stands at 74.98 meters to the tip of the damaged spire. It is the second largest stupa in the island today. According to the 5th century traveler Chinese monk Fa-Hsien’s descriptions, this stupa has been 400 feet (122 meters) in height and has been decorated with gold and silver and studded with all kinds of jewels. There also has been a 20 foot (6.1 meters) high Buddha statue made out of green jade. This monument is carries a special importance in ancient Sri Lankan Stupas as the top portions of the original stupa (known the “hatharas kotuwa”) still survives after thousand years of negligence, giving a glimpse to what it would have looked like thousand years ago. The British erroneously identified Jethawanaramaya as Abhayagiriya between 1873 AC to 1874 AC (Seneviratna, 1994). Therefore when older documents are referred, this fact needs to be kept in mind. Today there is a massive effort by the archeological department to restore this stupa to its original glory without destroying the archeological value. The work has been painstakingly slow due to the lack of funds. As you can see in the pictures, the stupa is still covered by grass and trees grown on it which more like a mound of earth.

We (me and my wife) walked all the way from Kuttam Pokuna to Abhayagiri Pagoda, initially thought of walking to Mahamewnawa but took a detour, that's the best thing about walking 😊. We came across a little hut who were selling king coconut and had one to quench thirst too. Our way to the Abhayagiriya was really nice and scenic, at least for us because the whole road was available just for us two. No vehicle was on the road most of time. We didn't feel unsafe, but rather welcoming. Didn't visit the museum there didn't like the pack of dogs at the entrance. And I am not a huge fan of dogs, and especially not the ones not on leash. You will find somany places where you could take good pictures, that is if you are open for the option of walking.

This is not only a single stupa. Back in the first century this was a Buddhist monastery complex that spreads over acres of land. These consists of ponds, bath houses, sleeping quaters, dining halls , hospitals and libraries. Well most of them are in ruins right now , but make sure you check them all out for the full experience.

This is where many monks in the Buddhist world travelled to during the Golden Age of Abhayagiri. Many Chinese monks came here, including Faxian in 400CE. There is even a statue here beside the pagoda for him.
