This

the
first
irrigation
project
in
ancient
SriLanka.
Theres
another
popular
name
to
Basawakkulama
tank
and
it
is
'Abaya
Wawa'.
Its
an
ancient
marvellous
man-made
irrigation
project
at
Anuradhapura,
SriLanka
and
was
mabe
by
king
Parakramabahu.
It
was
built
around
400
B.C.
The
tank
covers
nearly
5
square
kilometres
area.
Later
the
king
IV
Kaashapa
(898
-
914
A.D),
had
reconstructed
the
tank,
and
commanded
it
as
a
'fishing
free'
area.
The
stone
carved
letter
or
'Puwaru
lipiya'
that
was
found
at
the
bank
of
the
tank,
proves
that.
The
wall
atound
the
tank
is
measured
up
to
5910
feet
in
length.
Though
the
tank
is
24
centuries
old,
it
still
provides
water
to
nearly
916
acres
of
paddy
fields.
