A great tank built by ancient kings of Sri Lanka. Very beautiful scenery. Many birds, buffalos and some fish can be seen. There is a safe place to have a bath.but water is not that clean, so better to avoid. A walking path is in northern wall whii gives amazing views.

King Paduwasdeva ( 504-474 BC ) whose capital was at Vijithapura took a princess called Subaddhakacanna from North India in marriage. Following her came six of her seven brothers who established their own villages through out the country

Basawakkulama Tank is a wonderful place to grasp in the various birds of Sri Lanka. It is surrounded by lots of greenery and birds, of course, with views of temples from afar. Although it's a bit unclean with litter scattered on the ground, you can still enjoy its scenic view.

We went on 11th Friday 2022, to avoid crowd. Usually weekends are full of visitors to these massive man made tanks. Surrounding has been polluted by local visitors. Utterly disappointed about the local visitors.

This is an amazing place where you can be relax as it's not crowded. We can observe Sthupa at here. The place was windy and clouded, I think a best place to have a bath at evening

This is considered as the first irrigation project in ancient SriLanka. Theres another popular name to Basawakkulama tank and it is 'Abaya Wawa'. Its an ancient marvellous man-made irrigation project at Anuradhapura, SriLanka and was mabe by king Parakramabahu. It was built around 400 B.C. The tank covers nearly 5 square kilometres area. Later the king IV Kaashapa (898 - 914 A.D), had reconstructed the tank, and commanded it as a 'fishing free' area. The stone carved letter or 'Puwaru lipiya' that was found at the bank of the tank, proves that. The wall atound the tank is measured up to 5910 feet in length. Though the tank is 24 centuries old, it still provides water to nearly 916 acres of paddy fields. When you look 360Β° around, you will be able to see Ruwanwail Maha Saaya, Jethawanaramaya, Abayagiriya and Mirisawatiya from distence.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ Best place to bathing if you visit in the Anuradhapura. Spacious n attraction place for everyone. But some people are trying to ruin its beauty. Garbage is put in everywhere. Please don't forget to protect it. We must protect it for next generation n they too should enjoy its beauty.
