Mihintale is only 12 kM away from the famous Anuradhapura city. The sacred forest mountain Missaka Pabbatha where King Devanampiya Tissa met Arhat Mahinda Thera and his companions is situated in Mihintale. Prior to that the Lord Gautama Buddha had visited this place on his Third visit which was called as Missaka Pabbatha then. Being one of the sixteen places (Solosmasthana) the Lord Buddha had visited in Sri Lanka, this is regarded as one of the most important sacred places by the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. The area of Mihintale surrounds with a jungle and there are rock boulders scattered around the mountainous area. There are many caves which were earlier used by monks for meditation in a quite surrounding away from the main city of Anuradhapura. There is abundance of ancient stone architecture surrounding the many Stupas, monastic complexes and other sacred places. Asoka , the Emperor of India who became victorious after fighting a long war was disillusioned and sought Buddha's refuge to heal up his inner self. Becoming an ardent Buddhist, he let his son and the daughter be ordained as a Bhikku and a Bhikkuni (Buddhist priest and a nun named Mahinda and Sangamitta) whom later became Arhats. Arhath Mahinda and his companions came to Sri Lanka as a delegation sent by Arahath Moggali Putta Tissa with the patronage of Emperor Asoka on the 236 th year of the Buddha parinirvana. The Sinhalese architecture, paintings and sculpture were a result of the Buddhism which nourished these throughout the centuries that followed.

Mihintale is a very ancient place. It is believed that this is the place where Mahinda Thera came to Sri Lanka to bring Buddhism to Sri Lanka. It is believed that it was during the reign of King Tissa who was a king at that time. Buddhism is considered to be a descendant of Ceylon since then. It is also believed that various arts came to Sri Lanka at that time. Mihintale rock is a small one. Older people can't climb. A handrail is made and finished. The view from the top is very beautiful. The car park is huge. There are two car parks upstairs and downstairs. A new dagoba is being renovated these days. The day I went to Mihintale a lot of people were helping it. A place of great historical value for walking. If you have not seen it then it is a must see in Sri Lanka.

Mihintale is a mountain near the town of Anuradhapura. Its summit has much spiritual significance to the Buddhist community. It’s believed that on this mountain top a Buddhist monk named Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa and together this meeting introduced Buddhism to the country. Monk Mahinda impressed the King with the peacefulness of the Buddhist doctrine and his contented, serene nature. The King subsequently renounced war, and went on to spread peace throughout the nation. There are several impressive religious and historical structures on and around Mihintale Mountain. Hundreds of pilgrims visit the site each year.

Mihintale is revered as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, but, regardless of your beliefs, it is unforgettable: a sequence of beautiful shrines, stupas and caves strung out across wooded hills, usually busy with crowds of devout, white-robed pilgrims.According to legend, it was at Mihintale – literally “Mahinda’s Hill” – that the Indian missionary Mahinda, met and converted King Devanampiyatissa in 247 BC, establishing Buddhism as the island’s state religion. Mahinda was the son of the great Mauryan emperor Asoka, sent by his father to bring word of the Buddha’s teachings to Sri Lanka. Buddhism was immediately embraced with fervour by the Sinhalese people and soon became firmly established in the island – unlike in India, its birthplace, where it would subsequently fall into terminal decline. All over the world, high places are given religious significance, with the result that devotees are always climbing steps. Sometimes on their knees. Mihintale is one such place, its various shrines connected by a total of some 1,840 steps that ultimately lead to the summit – steep enough to require deep breaths and a meditative pace. They were built in the reign of Bhathika Abhaya (22 BC–AD 7), although a later paved road provides a short cut up to the first level.

(Translated by Google) Mount Mahintale - where the Holy King Mahinda first met King Devanampiya Tissa when the king and his entourage went hunting. During this meeting, the king took refuge with the holy monk Mahinda and invited the delegation to the palace to make offerings and give teachings to the court. Dharma transmission According to the two histories Mahāvamsa and Dipavamsa, the Holy Sangha Mahinda, the son of King Ashoka (Asoka) was the one who spread Buddhism into the island nation in the mid-third century BC. The monk Mahinda received the Venerable at the age of 20, mastered the sacred scriptures, strictly observed the precepts and took the responsibility to come to Sri Lanka to transmit the ordinances by the order of King Asoka - who was a close friend and sister brother of King Devanampiya Tissa. ruled the kingdom of Ceylon (Ceylon) at that time. He and 4 other monks, a Sa-di, near the male use divine powers to come together to the island nation. Knowing that King Devanampiya Tissa would go hunting at Mount Missaka (now Mahintale) - about 12 kilometers from Anuradhapura, Holy Sangha Mahinda took the way of the king. In the face of the solemn, calm, and liberating of the monks, the king seemed to be regretted and quickly expressed his respect. Here the monk Mahinda gave a discourse on the Elephant Footprint (Culahatthipadopanna sutta, Central 1) and took refuge in the Three Jewels for the king and his entourage. The king happily and happily invited Mahinda's party to the palace to be offered offerings, listen to the dharma, but the group asked to stay on the mountain and come to the palace the next day. The next day came to the capital city, after taking his son, Mahinda gave sermons from two sutras Vimanavatthu and Petavatthu and ended with teaching the Four Noble Truths in Samyuttanikaya. After that, the king offered the Mahamegha noble garden to set up the Sangha for the Sangha to stay. The sangha was finally established and the royal garden later became the great Mahavihara - the center of Buddhist culture of Sri Lanka. " Standing in the midst of a quiet, ancient relic, but still preserving the full footprint of the ancient sage, they have diligently propagated so that the Dharma can still be successfully circulated to this day. Our hearts are filled with gratitude to the source of the dharma that they have planted and preserved for posterity. Zooming into the distance, glimpse the stupas and Buddha statues seem to be hidden in the old forest for more than 2,300 years. The sound of the wind, the rustling of leaves in the middle of the Pali sound, sounds like an ancient Elephant Footprint. [

Mihintale has a historical significance for it is believed to be the place where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. It is exceptionally busy to visit during the Poson season. However, that also means you can climb it late night or early morning, and you will still find people around. We climbed the rock around 2 am on the Poson weekend, and was moderately busy even at that time. Ideal if you don't want to be climbing without many people around. It is not a difficult climb. Plenty of places en route to the top if you want to rest. Photos uploaded are from an off-season climb (as you can see, not many people around).

Mihintale Mountain, with the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, began to serve as a residential area for the venerable monks headed by Arahath Mahinda Mahathera. But soon, with the royal patronage, the sanctuary housed a multitude of with monastic buildings-stupas, uposathgharas, bodhigharas- to serve the monks. Sixty eight cave dwellings provided the monks shade and shelter. Mihintale, the sanctuary for many thousands of laymen as well as holy men, had all the facilities and amenities for basic living. Vedahala – the Hospital at the foot of the mountain at Mihintale With the growth of the community of monks and the pious laymen, there arose the inevitable need of a hospital. The first hospital at Mihintale was founded by King Sena the second (853-887 AC) at Mihintale. The identification was based on a tenth century inscription found at the site. About half a kilometer from Indikatusaya along the gravel road and on the turning to the left is located Rajagirilena Kanda. On the low hill with a height of about of 100 feet, among the boulders at the summit are caves once occupied by the monks. Fairly roomy cells were formed by brick and clay walls that divide the interior sheltered by an overhanging rock roof. Rajagirilena Kanda with its airy caverns in a pleasant setting is believed to be first dwellings of the Buddhist monks at Mihintale. Kaludiya Pokuna, the Black Water Pool at Mihintale A short path of about fifty meters through the boulders at Rajagirilena Kanda leads to Kaludiya Pokuna, the central attraction of the hill named Porodini in the Mihintale Tablets of King Mahinda the 4th. Kaludiya Pokuna, the largest pool at Mihintale measures 200 feet in length and 70 feet in width. Around the pool are the ruins of meditation halls, bathing houses and walled caves. The name Black Water Pool was a result of the dark shadows left upon the waters by the rock boulders and shady trees surrounding the pool.
