This majestic swimming hole on Samoa's Upolu Island sits just inland from the Pacific coast. It was formed when the roof of an ancient lava tube collapsed, exposing the 98-foot-deep teal-blue pool. This is the largest of many such tide pools and blow holes formed in the area many thousands of years ago. An underground cave system connects this swimming hole to the nearby ocean, and the water rises and falls with the tides. 'To Sua' translates to English as 'big hole.' While accurate, it feels like an understatement in this context. For adventurous visitors to Upolu Island, To Sua Ocean Trench can feel like a trip to another world. To get to this natural saltwater pool, make your way along a cliffside path surrounded by lush forest. Then climb down to the waters via the wooden ladder. After your swim, you can squeeze through a cave-like lava tube to find yourself on a short, sandy beach.

This place is awesome. I loved the setup, there are small fales placed throughout the premises. There are some that face the ocean and not only are the views beautiful, the breeze feels great. There is also a rock pool for younger kids that may not be able to make it down there steep ladder that leads to the trench. The rock pool is easily accessible by a flight of stairs, 115 steps exactly. There are 🎏 that swim around in the rock pool which makes it fun for the kids to look at. The rock pool can also be warm dependent on the time you go. The tide fills the rock pool. The rock pool sits very close to rough and deep ocean so keep an eye out for your children. Being so close to the water makes it fun to walk around on the lava rocks. However, again be careful and keep an eye out for your kids. I took my 6 year old and he navigated the lava rocks easily although there were some areas more jagged than others. There's a PVC pipe that has been cemented atop the blow hole to accentuate the gushing air produced by the crashing waves below. There's a restaurant there but it wasn't opened when I was there. There are working showers and restrooms as well as changing rooms. One thing I suggest is to get there early and pack a lunch. Also, gas up your vehicle. The drive from town can be long but this place is well worth it!

Located quite a drive (1.5 hrs from Apia) To Sua is a must visit attraction in Samoa. The natural beauty of the water is only exceeded by the friendliness of the locals. Like many things in Samoa, there is an element of difficulty in getting down the huge ladder, at least 10 m, to a platform. However once there you can jump in comma even at low tide. Some are even game enough, to jump in from 12 metres above, the top of the ladder. There are natural lava tubes, connecting the smaller Trench. The water from the tides must come in through similar tubes out to the ocean side. Some swells produce small currents in the water, depending on the size of the waves coming in to shore. However it's a relatively easy swim. Best time to visit is super early in the morning as the tour buses arrive around lunch time. It is run by the local Village and they take huge pride in producing the finest Gardens to walk through at sunset.

Soothing place to go for views and a nice swim. The ladder down does require a level of fitness, nothing extreme. The photos from others are not deceiving, it really is clean and blue. Note: ‘Revealing’ swimwear can only be visible inside the trench. There are ropes to help you move around in the trench as there is some current. The rope going North (into the cave) has a nice view when you look up. While at the trench, head South of the trench to see the ocean ‘mouth’. Food and water is also available.

Great scenery. Not for the faint hearted though. Not a lot of in terms of safety standards and fall protection.

Great experience and one of the best things to do in Samoa. There is a entrance fee but it’s a simple ‘pay and do what you want.’ The trench is on a large property with beautiful landscaping where you can walk around and enjoy the grounds. The trench is near the ocean along a cliff-face which allows other great photo opportunities.

Beautiful upkeep of the property. It’s $20 per person and it’s well worth your money and possibly 1GB of pictures in your phone. Loved it here!

Great swimming hole and worth the 20 WST entry. Ladder in and out of the trench is rather slippery but with some care is accessable for most.

This place is amazing. It is set in some beautiful gardens at the south east end of Upolu. A lava flow has left a couple of big holes in the land and the sea has got into the one nearest the coast, creating a big pool at the bottom of a hole, with big cliffs all around it. Access to the pool is by a steep path and then a long wooden ladder, it's not for the faint-hearted. The pool itself was at least 1.5m deep in most places, you need to be a capable swimmer as there are no real edges or beaches and the tide flows in and out.

Must visit in Samoa!! Absolutely amazing. Well kept and mind-blowingly beautiful ❤️ It costs 20 tala but well worth it. There are a few fales you can relax at and enjoy the ocean view. Outdoor showers and basic toilets also available. Small shop at entrance for snacks too.

Amazing trench. Unfortunately it was raining when we visited so the water did not have torquoise color. But it did not stop us from enjoying it. We still csme down and swam. Sea was warm. But current was strong. There are fales available for picnic and clean changing rokms. Great experience!

A must visit place. Entrance fee is 20T for adult and 10T for children. Bring: Swimwear, Towel, Sunscreen, Water, Gopro, Floaties (if you are not good swimmer), baby back carrier (if you want to take young child down), There is no locker so do not bring valuables. Very basic outdoor shower with cold water. There is separate male and female change rooms and toilets. The water is about 2 To 3 metre depending on the tides and there are crabs and small fishes. Unless you are a good swimmer, avoid swimming to the Ocean as the current may be rough. There is no life guard on duty and sadly people went missing in this place. So exercise with caution. The ladder can be slipper especially when raining. Recommend to visit early before 11am as afternoon tends to be busy. If you want postcard photos or perfect selfie, visit very early in the morning. It is possible to take the bus here but note buses don't run on Sunday and there is about a 1km walk from. The main road. Any taxi can get you here for no more. Than 250T return.

Awesome place to go. The climb down and back up is not for the faint of heart but we'll worth the effort.

Absolutely beautiful place, the ladder is fine if you are careful. It is so rare to find places like this that aren't full of tourists taking selfies, and I LOVE that drones are not welcome. So much more enjoyable.

Big ladder going down.. hope you're not too afraid of heights. Not suitable for young kids. The depth is, on average, about 2m sometimes deeper. But a fantasic swimming hole. Definitely worth the effort and the entry fee of $20tala.

Absolutely stunning!! It looks like something out of a postcard! The entry fee is 20 tala but definitely worth it. Just be careful and take your time going down the ladder as it can get a little slippery when it's busy. There is a rope under water to hook your feet on when the current is a bit stronger. Highly recommend and most definitely worth a visit!!!

All in all, great experience. Overpriced in my taste (20tala for what you get for 5 on the other side of the island)
