Extremely under staffed before 8pm on the night before Swiss National Day. The sole waitress did a great job in a busy restaurant but still, waiting 30 mins for a second round of drinks and an extra 10 mins for mains (40 mins) after the starter is not good customer service. The Appenzell beersoup was great but the wait for the mains was not.

This hotel stands right in the centre of Appenzell town and has plenty of parking nearby. A typical, cosy Appenzeller house with a bar and restaurant. We visited the restaurant and were impressed by the tall and well groomed waiters who spoke English too. The food was good and plenty but wasn't cheap. For 2 plates of Venison fillet, a bottle of red wine and couple of bottles of mineral water we paid in total 400 Chf. Mind you the two plates of main course was enough for 4 people. The side dishes served along the fillet we're good but have had better in other places.

This review is for dinner at the restaurant, not the hotel itself. Here is what I can say: The critical need to know information is that the restaurant´s wine list is among the most amazing I have seen in recent years. Especially if you are into the wines of Burgundy, the wine list is a dream. Top Domaines, with an astonishing depth of vintages reaching back into the mid 90ies. Just as a reference, the DRC list alone is two full pages. Even if you don't go all in, there are plenty of top notch choices at what I would consider generally fair price tags. Interestingly enough most tables were ordering beers or house wine, so it seems that the wine treasures here are primarily catering for private tastings. We ordered a few dishes off the seasonal menu, my main of white asparagus from Switzerland with veal escalopes and Hollandaise sauce was really nice. Down to earth, honest and not compromising on quality. Generally the food was quite enjoyable. So was the service and the rustic atmosphere of the first floor dining room.

I visited the restaurant for dinner two days ago. It was a rainy day and it is Sunday so choices are limited. I was lucky to have chosen this place because the food was really good. The venison tastes fabulous. It is tender, juicy and full of flavor. The only downside is the existence of flies. They were quite disturbing.

Really cute hotel and restaurant. I really liked the Christmas decorations. Friendly stuff, good food, everything is freshly made including the coffee cookies, reasonable prices for Switzerland.

What a great place to stay in Appenzell, with a unique atmosphere and an unbeatable location. Spacious and cosy room. Great foot and great service. The facade of the building is one of the landmarks of Appenzell. In a sunny day the restaurant outside provides a very typical and festive ambiance.

Set on the historic Landsgemeindeplatz in the heart of the beautiful town. It's Appenzell's only 4-star hotel. We stayed here on our Alpenwild tour. Wonderful restaurant and a small spa is available. Perfect for a romantic getaway.

Well-run family owned hotel, cozy and in the center of town. One less star because some of the serving staff were rather incompetent, unfortunately

Really nice place to stay. Staff went over and beyond to make us feel welcome. The restaurant inside was really good

I am convinced that the only rude person in all of Switzerland works at reception at this hotel. The blonde, older woman was unpleasant from the moment we walked in. It was extremely unfortunate to interact with someone as discourteous after an extremely long travel day. I will not be returning, nor do I recommend this hotel.
