The Plaza Mayor is a breathtaking giant space in the heart of Madrid. It was first built during the reign of Philip III. Called in Spanish the Centro de Turismo de Plaza Mayor, it is a nicely restored and carefully preserved municipal building from 1619.

I spoke to Ines twice and another fella there and Ines's English was very good as I don't yet speak much Spanish and she couldn't have advised anymore than she did. I was asking what were the ways of going to Segovia, to see the Roman aquaduct and I took the bus for a day trip. So thank you Ines for putting me on the right road !! Cheers Paul from London : )

The Casa de la Panadería, or Bakery House in English is a building that was erected during the construction of the Plaza Mayor. Originally used for various government agencies, it's now used as offices for tourism and there's a tourist information centre on the ground floor. The building is very much in the Flemish style and has two towers and spires. The frescoes in the facade are very beautiful and at the centre of the facade is the Spanish coat of arms. You can't miss this building if visiting Plaza Mayor, so definitely take a close look, it's beautiful and a favourite target of selfie takers.

Normally I have good success with these offices in Spain but this one was bad. Walked in and we were ignored by the staff while three of four tables had no one at them. We were then given a basic map with the instructions to visit the buildings. When asked, they told us the museums had free times every day at certain hours but didn't explain that the hours are different for Sunday. We ended up missing the chance to go to the museum because of the misinformation. We told him we were only here for the weekend so it seems like a big oversight. I guess they just don't care 💁‍♀️

The only building in the square that has remained since its construction in the 17th century. Today it is a tourist information office, but then the building was the place in which all the bread in the city was baked, so that they could keep a fixed price. The building is lined with paintings, which may look ancient but were drawn in 1992

This facade always looks great for photo, no matter day or night! It's the key or the whole plaza in my opinion.

The original Casa de la Panaderia was completed in 1671. The facade was originally decorated by frescoes that over the years suffered from elements. The current ones were completed in 1992 and depict mythological figures. An excellent photo opportunity. The plaza is usually crowded, so you'll have to look for a good spot to take pictures.
