We visited George Washington's Mansion last weekend at Mount Vernon, VA. We had a great time. It's a must see and good for all ages. The mansion and location itself is well preserved and maintained. I love how the tour guides are knowledgeable about the historic place, they are friendly too and answers your questions well. Don't forget to stop by the museum too, they have a lot of interesting historic items that they use back in the days. And good information about The Washington. If ever you got hungry, they have a restaurant right before the entrance that you can also try, or the food court upon exiting the museum. They also have a souvenir shop upon exiting the museum. Overall, We had a great experience.

This place is wonderful and full of history! Highly recommend it to everyone There is a lot to see at this place. The staff was wonderful, patient, and knowledgeable about history, in general, and the site, specifically. This is a restored home and ground of George Washington. There is a parking lot to the north side outside the gate. I think on many days that this is enough parking for the site. There is a fee for entering but it is well worth it as there is so much to see and so much history to be learned from this site. There is an entry building called the Ford Orientation Center that has lovely displays and a running movie telling the history of the site. The grounds are very well maintained and include a garden, mansion, tomb, Slave memorial, and wharf. You enter at the top of the hill and getting down to the wharf is a long walk with a good slope. They are refurbishing many of the structures on site but you can look inside many/most of them to see their purpose and items. The views are spectacular from the mansion and the walk around the site is very peaceful. I plan to visit again and bought a year-round pass to explore more things in the future. I highly recommend this historical place to all my fellow travelers and history lovers.

Incredible! If you can go, Go! Great for all ages. We took a family of 4, ages 10-40 and everyone enjoyed it. History and information galore that you didn't know you wanted to know, but you absolutely do! We went on George Washington's Birthday celebration which provided so much entertainment. The museum and 4D movie is a must! The mansion tour is worth the time. I'm not sure if Washington himself is there all the time, but meeting him on the estate was a fun surprise.

This was a fun tour. You get a real feel as to what life was like for the Washingtons in the late 1700's Friendly and helpful staff. I highly recommend the visit.

Interesting place to visit that is out of the way and is something to be enjoyed outside of the city. The tour of the mansion is definitely worth it. The rest of the property is also quite interesting to walk around. The museum is good but has most items locked away and some of the information was not historically accurate. If not good place and the restaurant is good.

We went on a day when it was raining and still stayed for 8 hours. While the mansion tour was lovely, the grounds of Mount Vernon are really spectacular! We loved all the little buildings and history and stories behind them. We caught a music demonstration and a reenactment of one of Martha's slaves. The quotes by George and Martha on the grounds were also interesting. I bought a book in the gift shop (amazingly large with unique items) to get to know them better. The museum is fantastic. The 4D movie was my favorite. And we ate at the restaurant-- it was so delicious. I definitely want to visit again!

This was a bit of a hike outside of DC - about 30 minutes, but the drive was beautiful and along the Potomac River. Note that there is Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, but there's also a town of Mount Vernon right beside it, so make sure you're putting the right location in your navigation tool. The Estate itself was good - the museum and shops looked fairly new and were full of information and fun souvenirs. We went on one of the shorter guided tours through the mansion and it ran about 20-25 minutes. Unfortunately there wasn't much information about the Washingtons themselves on the tour - it was mostly about what was in the rooms. We also kind of expected some actors/ employees to be dressed up in period pieces during the tour as we've seen this on other similar tours, but that wasn't the case here. Nevertheless, the tour was informative and the guides were kind and kept things on track. The rest of the estate can be viewed on your own, and the maps provided in the information centre are very detailed. I did feel really bad for the camel that lives on the estate. It looked miserable and cold.

If you’re a history buff then this is a must. Great little tour of the interior of the mansion with other available tours to add on. They do offer a National Treasure tour that provides some interesting facts about the mansion and grounds in relation to the movie. This tour takes you into the basement of the mansion whereas the $2 mansion tour does not. Beautiful gift shops and there is food available. Good for kids. Check out the Inn next door to entrance for brunch, lunch, and dinner.

Great for a nature walk. I did some birdwatching while there and enjoyed the scenery while there. A lot of open space to have a picnic after seeing the house and grounds. Overall, it’s a great day all day activity for the family. I did go during the day on a weekday so it was not too crowded.

It was a great place to visit. As you walk around the grounds there are plenty of people who will share information about the place. We did the house tour with is $2 more per person and it was awesome. So much history and loads of walking. Easy to do with a stroller. We used the free shuttle to take us from the river back up to the house!

12/15/23 evening event was great. From the decorations, lighting, concessionaires, exhibits, demonstrations to the finale fireworks over The Potomac. Great atmosphere and crowd. A question/answer time with George and Martha was quaint, informative and fun!!! The reenactors were wonderful. I highly recommend to put on your calendar for next year. Tickets sell out quickly so that says it all!

Beautiful and amazing piece of US history. The guided tour was short but informative. Our guide was pleasant and was able to answer every question asked. As it was cold and very windy when we visited, we weren't excited to explore the grounds and other buildings. We'll come back when the weather is more conducive to exploration.

Rainy day in December was well spent here. The visitor center and museum along with the mansion tour were great for indoors, and the gardens were still beautiful. We strolled through the landscape and found one of the trees Washington planted, as described in the book 'Founding Gardeners', one of my inspirations for coming here. Holiday decorations made it even more beautiful and enjoyed a lunch in the Inn. We drove back along George Washington Parkway, which starts here and ends in DC, a lovely drive. Highly recommend!

The admission fee is $26 per person, including the museums, the maison visit and a tour. The entire space is huge, including a farm, stables, and a great view over the Potomac. The mansion itself is well-maintained. We could see authentic arrangement of the Washington family. The tour guides are well trained, sharing interesting stories without being overwhelming. This is my go-to whenever I’m hosting friends around DC.

Great services, very helpful staff, good for all ages. I learned that Washington real body was transferred to the new tomb. The tomb of George Washington on the right along with his wife Martha on the left and 25 other families members are entombed there. The gift shop is huge, they are two sides for shopping. One for decoration stuffs cost up to $2k+, another one for souvenirs gift. Spending about 3hours to walk around and learning history about Father of our country.

A really nice place to visit, both the house and the grounds are nice to walk around. The house can be seen from the inside when booking a tour however, it is more a walkthrough than a proper guided tour, bet nevertheless still very nice to see. The garden and surrounding areas are beautiful and well kept and give some additional information about the history of the house, the people who lived there and how all was used in the time. The museum is very interesting and very nicely laid out and well worth the visit as well. There is plenty of parking when not visiting during the high season.

This was my first time to Mount Vernon. We bought tickets for the mansion and then we walked the grounds. Make sure to check the weather. Going to see it on a gorgeous day makes all the difference. Before I go any further, I would like to say thank you to all of the staff and owners who have done a great job of preserving the history and beauty of Mount Vernon. Be sure to buy tickets in advance. You will be able to select your desired time slot on the website. There is parking on site, but the lots are narrow, so keep that in mind. The staff are pretty knowledgeable, so ask whatever questions you have. There is also a gift shop and food truck on site with tables to eat outside. The views are unbelievable! Make sure to take some time and visit this historical location you won't be disappointed.

The grounds were beautiful and kept in great condition. There were a couple of spots where water gathered and became mud. The buildings have been kept in great condition and are very interesting. It did get quite hot so I would recommend going earlier or later in the day.

We took our kids to visit while studying presidents in school. We bought tickets online ahead of time to do the mansion tour, national treasure tour and a river tour. We enjoyed the first 2 tours very much. The guide on the National treasure tour was good. Sadly we tried to grab a bit to eat at the food truck and ended up missing the bus. It actually left the dock a couple minutes early as we were running down the hill to the dock. So make sure you arrive early for that. Otherwise we had a great family experience and we learned a lot and appreciate more what George Washington did for our country 🇺🇸

Love history? You must come here! Takes you back in time. Loved the tour of the actual home. The property is huge. You can buy tickets online and set a tie for the tour or you can buy once you arrived. There was plenty of parking when we visited but I’m sure during warmer months parking is limited. So come early. We loved it so much we bought the membership. I can come during the week with my son. They have live animals like sheep and bulls. I saw people walking with their dogs- therefore dog friendly, bring your furry friend.

The home tour was well done. The visitor center and museum exhibits, and multimedia films were an extraordinary bonus. We had lunch at the adjoining Washington Inn which was very convenient, though they also had a food court option.

This was an incredible place to tour, the guides were all very knowledgeable, the layout was easy to navigate and even though there were about 200 8th graders there it didn’t feel like it was that busy. The lines moved along quickly and the tour guides kept those kids in line. It was an absolute treat to see the residence of our first president, I only wish we had leadership as humble and tenacious as Mr. Washington was. Definitely give yourself a few hours (3-5) to tour the residence and all of the grounds and that should still give you time to peruse the gift shop (which is extensive)! The personal belongings museum at the end was a nice way to finish the experience. Be sure to go down to the wharf to see the Potomac and that will put you near the new and old tombs.

We visited with a tour guide in a large group. We were shocked that crops and orchards where still growing, which was pretty cool. The mansion and slave quarters was interesting with lots of historical context and the placards had a lot of interesting history as well. The museum on-sight was extremely well done. Be prepared for a lot of walking! But almost all, if not all, paths were wheelchair accessible. Plan for a minimum of about 2-3 hours, but you could definitely spend a LOT longer!! Probably not best suited for children under ~10 because of the museum-like aspects.

Landed in DC and the first thing my friend took me to was here! Lots of history at this place and provided some astonishing views of the Potomac river!! It was a bit crowded due to the weekend. But we were able to complete the tour we came for. It was a hot and sunny day and we were glad that there were enough trees to provide us shade. The tour guides were excellent - funny, informative and easy to chat with. Thanks to them that people actually understood the importance and lesser know aspects of the place. A must if you are in this vicinity 😍

Very interesting place indeed. I mean it's George Washington! The location is beautiful, with wonderful views of the river. We went a little "out of season" but there was still plenty to see and do. All the guides and staff were knowledgeable and extremely helpful (recommend the mansion tour for sure!). We will be back, maybe during the main season to fully experience everything they have to offer. Absolutely recommend visiting this spot!

This estate is beautiful! And you learn so many interesting facts about George Washington. Not just the president but the man who considered himself first and, foremost, a farmer and an early conservationist. Tour the grounds and the house, enjoy the museum and gift shop, and have lunch in a charming, reasonably priced restaurant on the grounds.

I have always wanted to visit My. Vernon but for some reason never did till yesterday. I am so glad I did. It was a very well maintained national landmark. I did think the entrance fee was a little high but they provide a free audio self tour and the tour of the house is included in the price. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I have a habit of asking lots of questions and they had an answer every time. George Washington was an outstanding man and leader.

Well preserve museum and although is recognition of the slavery that happened there, it's very little acceptance of the economic and social impact on the country and particularly of George Washington. "He considered himself a farmer" Did he really farmed the land or administrated a plantation? "He was a successful businessman" or an abusive slave owner? The history in the place, as expected, has been sanitized. It still a good place to visit.

What a great place to visit! George Washington worked hard to serve and improve life. It was amazing to see where he lived, his tomb, and his legacy. Side note- my son passed out in front of the entrance and the staff was incredibly helpful and prompt to take care of him and get an ambulance to come check him out. The staff checked on him throughout the day multiple times to make sure he was okay.

Large and well kept. You can easily spend an entire day. There are a number of far flung attractions. The distillery requires riding the shuttle or driving. The mansion tour costs extra. On busy days, it's wise to book in advance. It is very nice, but calling it guided is a slight exaggeration. You move from room to room with experts who may offer a thirty second introduction and then are available to answer questions.

I totally enjoyed my visit to Mount Vernon. The mansion tour was fascinating . Perhaps the most sobering part of the visit was the unmarked graves belongings to the slaves who had worked on the plantation.

The museum and mansion tour is a must do!So fun to learn about the home life of our first President and also how much the mansion has changed and improved since 1799. Washington Tomb is being renovated so during my visit George and Martha tombs were not on view nor the wreath laying ceremony at tomb. The grounds are very nice and the Wharf has a nice view of Potomac River. Three nice gift stores as well.

This place is beautiful even at 30 degrees! We visited in late March when there was unexpectedly low temperatures 🤷‍♀️ and I'm so happy we came here to see the mansion. Picturesque, historical, awe inspiring, and solemn all at the same time.

Mount Vernon is a national treasure. It's maintained meticulously and the historical preservation and research is very cool. Most recently, the authentic bread oven at the farm is a delight. Coverage of the enslaved experience has improved greatly over the last couple of years. Farm animals are a highlight for the kids. This is a must-visit site for those coming to DC for more than 3 days. While there are bus options, it's much easier to reach by car or Uber/taxi. For local residents, the events are a lot of fun. Events on the lawn might be pricey but they are always worth it.

Rode bikes from DC down the Mount Vernon Trail along the Potomac River. The trail ends at George Washingtons Plantation. Reservations are recommended for tours but no one checked our reservations to confirm. Beautiful view around the plantation and so much history given my all the employees. There is a food court and a restaurant near the gift shop at after you exit the exhibit.

Wow! Mount Vernon was a great visit. The museum was very nice, the grounds are just beautiful, and the tour is so entertaining and educational. Seeing Washington's grave was just special. My wife and both looked at each other and said.. "we are 4 feet from George Washington!" Emotional. Loved the tour! Can't say that enough. Always a good place to visit but especially nice during the 4th of July. A perfect evening sitting on the lawn overlooking the Potomac. Captured the moon over the river before the fireworks and George Washington addressing the attendees. There are fireworks in December. Two good times to visit for even more to see. A lot to see on the grounds. I would also recommend other special occasions like the Brewfest too. Check the calendar of events on their website. If you haven't been you should.

  • 5/5 Maureen B. 8 months ago on Google
Mount Vernon has layers and layers of history and deserves many visits at different times of the year to better understand the life of the Washington family but also the enslaved population. Normally, the house tour is wonderful with trivia provided about where Lafayette slept, which room the Custis children stayed in, etc. Unfortunately, this last visit in conjunction with the fireworks on July 1st felt like the tour guides were overwhelmed and just trying to move people through the mansion. Washington's speech before the fireworks was good. If possible, I would recommend getting on a tour that shows the parts of the house normally not open to the public such as the top floor where Martha lived after George died and the basement where you can see the foundations and storage spaces.

George Washington's plantage and house at the Potomac River. Stroll around the grounds, visit his grave and buy tickets for the housetour in advance. It can be really crowded there. See the room, where he got the message, he is president, see the bed, where he died. At the visitorcenter there is a large exhibition about his life and times, some films and even a 4D Theater. So take your time. There is also a shuttlebus to his Destillerie and mill, but we were in lack of time.

We had such a fun visit here! The grounds are gorgeous and the whole family found the museum to be very interesting. The tours could be improved. We did two: the "enslaved people" tour and the mansion tour. The enslaved people tour was dreadful. Our guide was lacking in public speaking skills. He was hard to follow and it felt like he was just winging it. Thankfully we didn't spend any extra $$ on this tour. The mansion tour wasn't really a tour so much as a walk-through. It wasn't guided. We enjoyed it though.

The well preserved estate and surrounding grounds is offering a good glimpse into the past. We enjoyed the tour of the house and walking to the beach, the fields and the graves. A shuttle service was also available at no extra cost. We went by public transport from Washington DC to the site, and that was an easy journey.
