Used the trail to bike into DC. Best way to travel in the city. Lots of bike lanes and beats walking. But scenery around trail (before arriving to the city) was not super exciting.

Easy grade, paved, established trail. First mile and a half has pedestrian crossing, but once you cross Columbia Pike, no issues of car traffic if you really want to zone out. Beautiful scenery.

Beautiful flat trail from Arlington to Purceville covering over 45 miles. There are a lot of road crossing so need to be careful and its good for endurance biking. Fall colors made it all beautiful.

I love this trail, easy to run and always kept in great shape. However bit overcrowded during covid, love to see people out and getting active!

The W&OD is an amazing trail that this city is so lucky to have. I wish more city would have dedicated trail like this all over the US. It encourages people to bike to work. This trail is perfect for Cyclists, Runners, Walkers for all ages. Very safe dedicated trail with little to no Vehicles. It also connects other Trails like the Four Mile run and Mt. Vernon trail. Definitely a 5 star.

I like other biking trails better. This one is always busy with walking people near Vienna city center.

Thank you Rail to Trail foundation for converting such amazing trail. It stratches 45 miles west to the town called Purcellville. Pretty far, for a round trip bike ride (90miles) which I accomplished twice 🚴

The W&OD Trail is this bike trail following the old railroad right of way from Shirlington to Purcerville. If you start at the trailhead in Shirlington, there isn't much to see. But the trail reveals itself to those who persevere. To do that, you need to ride out into the Piedmont. Going uphill at a leisurely 2 percent, the trail does make dips and bends as it negotiates more modern infrastructure. But once you get past the beltway, the trail generally settles down. But it becomes this maul of distance, ever straight, fading into the distance. Vistas become the norm by mile 30 and you get into more suburban land. If you stick it out and go all the way to Clark's Gap at mile 40, rejoice! You're only 5 miles from the end where you might find so local twists and turns as you enter the town of Purcerville. But don't quit! You gotta get home and its 45 miles away!

We normally ride the segment from Leesburg to Purceville but this time we started at the parking lot in Herndon with the goal of getting to Leesburg. Due to high winds we only did 14 miles round trip but it was still great fun. The trail is paved in excellent condition with a number of moderate lengthy climbs. I was pleasantly surprised that the scenery was woodsy and not too suburban. Our BEST discovery was Carolina Brothers BBQ right on the trail in Ashburn. Next time we will park at the lot across the trail from the BBQ place as a starting point. It was awesome to have BBQ at the end of our ride. Absolutely delicious with outdoor seating.

Pretty good trail with low elevation. At some point goes through a residential area, but it's a short distance. So far I did 23 miles on it one way, and can't wait to ride it all.

Love it! Mixture of easy walks, hiking and a little climbing whatever you choose. Plenty of parking and tremendous view of the river!

I enjoy this trail but the trail side food options I encountered sucked (stopped at 4 before giving up and getting McDonalds).

Use the trail instead of the edge of the road. Why not try Rt.7 , at least you can see what's coming when your trying to get around a pack of 8mph moving barricades!!🤨.

Great trail, the elevation gain isn't bad its just a bit long. You don't need to be in great biking shape for it. The way back says mostly flat it's really not. Don't expect to coast the whole way back. You still need to pedal. Great stops on the trail Great views

Granted, I almost got hit by a scooter. But, other than that it's a great walk! I think the trail ends in Reston? I just walked from Shirlington to Columbia Pike. But, it's a good walk, got all my steps in, and dogs get curbed so it's clean. Technically, the fifth star was more about the good weather...

Parked on the street perpendicular to the trail. There was a sign that no parking from 7-9a M-F, but otherwise good parking available on that street. The trail is great. From the start there are stops for streets and lights, but past mile marker 2.5 or so, it was pretty continuous and uninterrupted. Nice scenes of the creek along the route and able to run the 4 mile trail run as well.
